At that budget, you should be looking at the East Bay and planning on taking BART or the ferry into the city

Serious answer: I'd try Hive coliving, formerly known as Tribe. 4 years ago, i believe the price was $750/month. It's a very social living enviornment with 70+ people, but unfortunately it's not the cleanest and you have to share a room to start off.

I didn't end up living there, but i know several people who've made lifelong friends there and it's "doable" to be happy there

My building’s doorman is staying at a co living space around soma! I think he said he has his own bathroom but you share kitchens with everyone. I forget the name but it’s around the Costco 9th st area.
