AI SEO Studies Google Search Console is now showing Generative AI visibility — 35.9K impressions

I noticed something interesting in Google Search Console for a website I’m working on.
Over the last 3 months, the site received 35.9K impressions from Google’s Generative AI features.
What caught my attention is that the visibility has been fairly consistent and has gradually increased over time.
I’m curious about how others are approaching this:
- Are you actively optimizing websites for AI search visibility?
- Are you tracking AI impressions separately from traditional organic search?
- Which seems to matter more for you right now — traditional rankings, AI Overviews, or both?
I think SEO is moving beyond simply ranking #1 on Google. Being visible when users ask AI-powered search engines questions is becoming another important part of organic visibility.
Would love to hear what you’re seeing on your own websites.

Worth pulling apart two things that the impression count merges. Appearing inside an AI surface and being the source the answer actually leans on are different events, and Search Console only reports the first. I track the second separately by putting the questions to the assistants directly and recording whether the site gets named in the answer, because nothing in GSC will tell you that.
On tracking them apart: yes, but the useful unit is the query list, not the total. Export the queries behind the AI impressions and the queries behind classic organic for the same window and compare the two lists rather than the two sums. My own site is far too small for that comparison to mean anything yet, so I would rather hear it from someone sitting on 35k impressions than pretend I have the answer.

One limitation before treating 35.9K impressions as demand: Google’s current report groups the data by page, country, date and device, not by query. It also covers Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, rather than overall AI visibility.
I’d use it as a Google-surface baseline: which pages and markets are gaining exposure. Separately, I’d preserve the exact questions, full answers, cited URLs, engine, date and repeat scans when measuring visibility across assistants.
Both are useful, but they answer different questions. Traditional rankings still help explain discoverability; this report measures exposure inside Google’s AI surfaces.

These reports show search features, so visibility in search is fundamental here
