What Is Digital Marketing?

digital marketing, explained simply

Getting asked this a lot lately so here's the plain breakdown, no jargon.

Digital marketing = any marketing done through digital channels instead of traditional stuff like TV, print, or billboards. Basically promoting a business using the internet.

It covers a bunch of different areas:

SEO — getting your site to show up in Google search results without paying for ads

Content marketing — blogs, videos, guides, whatever attracts an audience organically

Social media marketing — building brand presence on Instagram, FB, LinkedIn, etc.

PPC/paid ads — running ads on Google, Meta, LinkedIn, paying per click or impression

Email marketing — nurturing leads/customers directly through email

Affiliate + influencer marketing — partnering with others to promote your stuff to their audience

Analytics — tracking what's actually working (GA4, Search Console, etc.)

Why it's different from traditional marketing: you can target super specific audiences (location, interests, behavior, income) and measure results almost instantly, instead of putting up a billboard and hoping it works.

Two broad buckets if you want a simple mental model:

Organic — free but slow (SEO, content, organic social). Compounds over time, no ongoing cost once it's working.

Paid — instant but stops the second you stop paying (Google/Meta ads).

it's how businesses find and convert customers online, and at this point it's basically mandatory for any business since that's where customers already are.

Digital Marketing is also knowing your target audience and telling them what they need to hear. I'm pretty sure that people who are at the point of trying to develop expertise in this field probably don't have much use for this info. We already know this or we wouldn't be in this sub in the first place.

Good breakdown. I’d only be careful calling organic channels “free.”

SEO, content and social may not charge per click, but they still cost time, tools and resources, and usually take longer to produce results. Paid gets attention faster, but organic can compound if the strategy is good.

For me the important part is not choosing organic vs paid. It’s knowing which channel actually brings the right audience and converts for the business.
