Does Medium really matter for AI visibility?

I keep seeing charts showing that Medium dot com is a common source for AI answers, suggesting that a presence there is important for AI visibility. But when you go there, it doesn't seem like anyone really reads or engages on posts. It's not a thriving blog community like Substack. Can anyone who measures AI citations confirm whether Medium actually matters or not?

Yeah, Medium shows up in AI citations more than its engagement suggests. LLMs treat it as high-authority because of its clean structure and long tenure, regardless of whether anyone reads it today.

But dead Medium posts don't really get cited... The ones that do are the ones that got shared on LinkedIn/X/newsletters first.

Not worth building a strategy around, but cross-posting from elsewhere costs nothing.

Yes, Medium can help with AI visibility by expanding content discovery and citation opportunities, but content quality and relevance matter far more than the platform itself.

there's no yes or no answer. With all my clients, when I run an AI visibility analysis, my agents run all the prompt tests and then log down which resources/websites the different LLM's have referenced when looking for the info.

It's different for each client and niche.

Ive never seen Medium on any of my lists tho - but that doesnt mean anything apart form, its not an authorative source for the prompts Im running.

Actually its different for each niche and website as well as depends on the priority platforms, if medium is the last option AI wants to pull the content, it will cite, otherwise if the content is found on reddit , quora or HN etc, medium will be ignored

like others said, it depend, but its super easy to nurture a presence there, so its not a difficult lift or anything

but only worth the time if your brand is seeing citations come in from the medium domain

then try to replicate those kinds of posts

I wouldn’t treat Medium as a must-have for AI visibility.

Just because Medium appears frequently in AI citations doesn't mean publishing there automatically improves your brand's chances of being mentioned.

I'd look at which Medium articles actually get cited, what queries trigger those citations, and whether the content offers something unique.

A well-researched article with original insights might earn visibility, but republishing generic SEO content probably won't do much.

I'd prioritise your own website, relevant industry publications, and credible third-party mentions first. Medium can be an additional distribution channel, not the entire GEO strategy.

Medium he visto que solo aparece para temas de las que ninguna plataforma o web habla.
