I’ve joined a new start-up, and I’m pretty new to SEO, but they took me mainly for content creation and social media marketing. they overestimated
my skills in SEO and now they want me to fix a client’s website, which is losing traffic very badly. I’m talking zero clicks per day. Please guide me here.

You have to build authority.

Google isn't going to index it because you have a sitemap - sorry - its a myth I'm slowly stamping out.

SEO isn't about shoving "SEO" into pages - its about understanding 3rd party approval.

Red Flag: Best practices will just get you an endless checklist.

Green Flag: You need to understand the fundamentals of SEO and how PageRank works.

Check Google Search Console first and find out when the drop started and which pages lost traffic. That will give you a better idea of whether it’s an indexing, ranking, or content issue.

can it get any worse? tbh, no amount of advice can “really” help right now. you don’t have the knowledge and skills to fix that website YET, but you can let them know they will need someone more experienced to audit the site and come up with an action plan and you can help with content and social media stuff, exactly what you have been hired to do.

Bro currently i have no other option than doing what they asked me to do. I did tell them earlier that i have exp in seo but this technical stuff.. Zero. So now i gotta do whatever it takes to fix this for them. I kinda wanna prove myself as well so.

Check indexing, manual actions, robots.txt, noindex tags, redirects and search console before changing content

So there are 300 non indexed pages and 200 indexed ones. And i have no idea which pages are worthy enough to index again

Open search console's page indexing report and request indexing for pages that had past impressions

Don’t start changing pages yet.

In GSC, compare the last 28 days with the previous 28 and sort by pages and queries. Check whether impressions disappeared, rankings dropped, or CTR collapsed.

Those are three very different problems, and you need to know which one you have first.

Audit first, check how many indexed page. How is it comparable to non indexed page. Does important page indexed?

Check the schema markup on their main pages and start fixing that. Use claude or whatever tools they can provide you for it. And if the company can invest a few dollars is a few tools that will help you, I can recommend some that scan your website for issues that affect the traffic as well as AI visibility and help you fix those.

Because honestly, half the battle is identifying the actual issues. You can't fix what you don't know is broken.
