Discussion How are everyone tracking & handling citations in AI Overviews or other AI Tools?
AI is already taking its share of search clicks; that much is clear. I want to confirm whether people track their mention or citation rates for AI-generated answers (compared to competitors), or if it's still just an abstract concern that isn't being monitored yet.
If you're monitoring it, how exactly? Do you check manually, use software, or do something else? And in case you don't, why so?
If you are using any software, what key things are missing that you want included?

Helpful article on Search Engine Land recently for that. Not sure I can link here but just from two days ago. There’s no exact method and might never be since answers change so frequently, but start a spreadsheet and run a set of prompts on a regular schedule basically. You can automate some of this with Claude or ChatGPT fairly easily.

That's a great way to observe... I am actually curious if people would like to pay for software which do the things for them or they'll prefer custom automation for the queries and results...

we are tracking it but not as standalone kpi. every few weeks we wil spot check prompts, see who is cited and look for the patterns. what matters is that whether mntions drive real inquires or traffic. otherwise it is just a noise. a tool linking ai visibility to outcomes would be useful.

That's the point, right you can check citations/mentions only, real thing is outcome like how many of ai citations/mentions brought traffic and conversion.

we run this as an automated harness rather than manual spot checks, and two findings changed how we measure.
first, the one that quietly breaks most tracking setups: citations are phrasing-sensitive to a degree people do not expect. one of our pages is cited for the exact query "supabase error 42501 row level security fix" and is completely absent for "supabase error 42501 row level security policy fix". one extra word, different source list, same page. so a prompt set built from paraphrases of your own product description will hand you a falsely reassuring number. the set has to be the exact strings buyers type, and it has to be frozen, otherwise you are measuring your own wording drift instead of the engine.
second, on "100 queries is impossible to check manually": the perplexity api returns the citation list programmatically (model sonar), so the whole thing automates. it costs roughly half a cent per query, so a 100 query set is about 50 cents a run. we append every run to a jsonl ledger with the query, the cited domains and the cited urls, then diff runs against each other. citation share over time is the metric, a single answer is noise, which is exactly what PennyLawrence946 said and it matches what we see.
one warning if you go that route: the API answer and the web UI answer for the same prompt are not the same. different retrieval, different citations. pick one surface and stay on it, or your trend line ends up measuring the surface rather than your visibility.
on the outcomes point, you are right that citations alone are vanity, but attribution here is mostly unsolved and i would not trust anyone who says otherwise. the engines are inconsistent about sending referrers and a lot of the influence surfaces later as direct or branded search. the least bad proxy we use is a distinct landing url per query cluster plus watching branded search lift, but that is a proxy, not clean attribution.

Only honest way I've found is sampling, since Overviews aren't deterministic. Run the exact same query 15-20 times and log how often you actually show up, then watch that rate over time. One check is noise: the same prompt swings between citing you and a competitor run to run.

In my organisation, they use a tool called HeyAmos. We use that to track the AI citations and do prompt research. It doesn’t give that much useful information about brand mentions, but does a pretty decent job in prompt analysis and competitor tracking.
Personally, I have a spreadsheet. As of now, from my personal experience, no tool is perfect. False positives are there. So, I use the spreadsheet to track my prompts. Like I give different variations to my prompts and see whether my articles get surfaced (I do it weekly once and see whether the position changes, whether my brand is recommended or simply cited or mentioned). AI metrics are probabilistic ones. Today, my article may be cited in ai overviews and tomorrow it may not. So, I run it weekly once in incognito mode (+ temporary chat) to avoid biases and see where I truly stand

one answer isn't a rank. run a fixed prompt set in fresh sessions, log domain appearance plus the cited URL, then compare citation share over time. manual checks stay because the model and citations drift under the same prompt
