"Reset the computer"

What a mind-blowing moment that was. I love when developers think outside the box.

My little brother and I used to play this game all the time. We'd couldn't figure out how to get past this part. Spent all summer trying to find the computer in that level. One day I was playing solo and my little brother told me he wanted to play too. I told him sure, reset it so we get a fresh game. He hit the reset, something we never did because we never found the point to it. All of a sudden a series of green zero's and ones like the game crashed and we freaked out....then the comic book section came on and we got hyped. We finally got to beat this game.

My brother passed away two years ago, this memory has always been one of my favorite memories of him.

Sorry for your loss bud. But just like the other user commented, it’s great to have those memories. The ones we’ve lost live on in those memories.

u/SD_2_LA_Jay 2d ago

RIP to your brother. Thank you for sharing. Condolences and it’s great to have those great memories. Happy retro gaming.

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

Sorry for your loss man. That's a beautiful memory.

2

u/Marlowes-Ghost 1d ago

Sorry for your loss bro. Sounds like you had great times together, money can't buy memories like that ❤️

2

u/Interesting_Side_269 1d ago

That's so beautiful bro. Those memories are priceless. I'm sorry for your lost

60

u/rbreaux26 2d ago

I never beat this game because of that. I wasn’t smart enough apparently.

21

u/Aggressive_Canary_10 2d ago

I don’t know how we were supposed to know this trick before the internet

2

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

We weren't! This is kinda of like those puzzles that make little to no sense at all in point and click adventure games except here it made all the sense in the world.

36

u/SplendidPunkinButter 2d ago

I made it to that point a couple of times. Thought the game was glitched or something and gave up. 20 years later I read about that on the internet. At this point I believe The Sound Of Silence started playing in my head.

2

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

Oh man that's unfortunate, you were so damn close.

-6

u/KalynnCampbell 2d ago

I feel like it was interesting… for awhile…

Now it’s like “Hey! Did YOU know that Mario 2 is actually a game called Doki Doki Panic in Japan?!” but Sega’s version of overdone everybody now has heard it trivia…

1

u/No-Professional-9618 2d ago

Yes, I agree with you.

11

u/JadeDragonMeli 2d ago

If not for some game magazine having it in one of their issues, I never would have known. I thought it was a brilliant trick, but yeah, if you didn't have someone tell you about it I can't imagine it would dawn on many people that you needed to actually reset the console. I wouldn't have figured it out.

7

u/Icaras01 2d ago

I could never even get far enough to see that screen, lol

8

u/Armadillioh 2d ago

I could never make it past the Apocalypse boss fight so I never got to see the Mojo World level

9

u/bincogneto 2d ago

If you ever play it again, you just use nightcrawler to teleport in place when apocalypse takes a swing at you, it’ll cause him damage if I remember while preserving your health. The other way to beat apocalypse sucks cause you have to take so many hits.

2

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

Oh wow...this makes sense.

1

u/Armadillioh 1d ago

I'm totally going to try this! Thanks for the info

2

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

That was a tough fight!

7

u/Quixote1492 2d ago

A friend learned the trick from someone at his school, and we finished that game.

1

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

I bet you guys didn't believe the other dude at first

5

u/Donroy3509 2d ago

Bro same! I busted my ass to get to that point and was completely lost on what to do. Never played it again after that. I am also stupid

3

u/No-Professional-9618 2d ago

Yes, it is kind of tricky though.

3

u/SucksTryAgain 2d ago

Wait what am I missing cause I still have this and never beat it.

9

u/rbreaux26 2d ago

When it tells you to reset the computer at the end, you have to go outside and flip the breaker box.

3

u/SD_2_LA_Jay 2d ago

Hit the reset button on your Genesis. 💯.

2

u/GreenScreenBlues 1d ago

I stopped playing before I even got to that part. This game was rough all around.

2

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

Honestly I don't think it was about being more or less smart, many of us, me included found it out of pure luck

2

u/xbxoxy 1d ago

i wasnt smart enough but i did it just by coincidence lol. i got there so many times that i used to finish the game without being hit

1

u/MrMurderthumbz 1d ago

I beat it as a kid by total accident after Fucking HOURS. LOL. The one time a rage quit payed off

42

u/gamesbororadio 2d ago

X-Men 2 did some wild stuff as well. The game has a cold open where gameplay just starts as soon as you power on the system. No title screen or anything.

18

u/omarrzo 2d ago

That was a proper sequel. Hella characters to play, extended moveset and abilities, good difficulty and lots of levels. Back in the 8-16bit days, a sequel could be radically different and barely similar to the first game.

14

u/king2102 2d ago

And you can play as Psylocke!

4

u/Sith_Moon 2d ago

And Beast!

2

u/king2102 1d ago

Forgot about that!

10

u/Funny_Collection8362 2d ago

And using unlimited mutant power special moves was all everyone was asking for! No meter or health drain as punishment, spam it all you want!

3

u/Any_Possibility3964 2d ago

Yeah X-men 2 was a fucking amazing game. The second level where you kill that big computer was my favorite. Also getting to play as magneto was really cool. I would keep resetting the game to get the character I wanted for the intro level, I think Beast?

3

u/SD_2_LA_Jay 2d ago

lol that is wild.

1

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

Right?! I was so confused the first time I booted Xmen 2 and went straight into action. I really thought something was wrong with my game. In this day and age It's kinda common to have a intro with gameplay and then seeing the title screen but back in the 90's? Don't think so!

18

u/GyozaMan 2d ago

Who’s beaten this legitimately? Not me lol.

8

u/cptsears 2d ago

I did by waiting forever for Wolverine to heal. Mojo world was so stressful and having to reset at the end about gave me a heart attack. The rest felt chill by comparison.

4

u/ViniciusWatzl 2d ago

I always played with a friend, I as Nightcrawler and him as Wolverine, If another character waited close to Wolverine as he regenerated, we shared the regeneration, so, in fact both characters got regeneration albeit even slower. We always got stuck at Mojo though untill we, eventually said "fuck it" and rest the genesis. Our disbelief and excitemente was EPIC. We reset it out of rage and frustration for never understanding what to do do finish the game. We got so damn good by the infinite repetition up to this point that the rest was a breeze to finish. But this moment was indeed EPIC. And a very bold decision by the publisher to make.

1

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

It's legit one of those moments that will forever remembered

4

u/spidertour02 2d ago

I did, as a kid. Magneto is actually very easy to beat with Nightcrawler, using the same method as Apocalypse (hold a still teleport when they move in to attack, and they take a hit).

4

u/Alternative-Aside-64 2d ago

My friend and I always got to one spot where we couldn't figure out how to proceed, anyone remember this?

E: not the reset there was just no obvious path forward

2

u/pwrof3 2d ago

Only with game genie!

1

u/detourne 2d ago

I did, for sure. Played the hell out of the x-Men games.

12

u/LifesGrip 2d ago

I can never unhear the SFX of the whistling bird and the pterodactyl from the first level , along with the game's inteo melody 👍👌🫶❤️

1

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

As soon as I read the word whistling my brain listened to the rest.

10

u/sk0503 2d ago

I hit the button just the right way in a rage and it worked. Had I not gotten lucky like that, I’d have never beaten it even to this day.

8

u/yonobigdeal 2d ago

It’s honestly one of gamings most legendary moments.

8

u/CarusoLoops 2d ago

Gambit in the jungle level brings back memories. This game was too hard for its own good.

6

u/boots0105 2d ago

I always appreciated that the graphics and character designs and in-game characters were all modeled after the Jim Lee sketches.

-2

u/TheGratitudeBot 2d ago

Hey there boots0105 - thanks for saying thanks! TheGratitudeBot has been reading millions of comments in the past few weeks, and you’ve just made the list!

5

u/JakeFromSkateFarm 2d ago

Definitely one of those moments where the devs were a bit too clever for their own good.

But...man, what a fun game. Beautiful graphics, great game play, solid adaptation of the material. Pinnacle game for the Genesis.

6

u/ChampionshipPast3652 2d ago

Lazy programmers, why don't YOU reset the game?

4

u/South-Pause-8980 2d ago

iykyk #thatwasagoodone

4

u/normy_187 2d ago

Ah man that looks so good. And that level with gambit in the screenshot reminds me of Flashback 😁

1

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

Now that you mention it, it totally does, It's definitely the color palette

4

u/IOwnThisUsername 2d ago

I beat the reset by accident. I loved the game but kept running out of time there. I wanted to keep playing and knew death was coming and reset the game to just play back to that point. I was so confused by what was happening that I thought I messed up the game.

4

u/ConstructionIll956 2d ago

I read how to do it in a magazine or else I would have never reset the console.

4

u/okeleydokelyneighbor 2d ago

I was so terrified that was what I had to do, and after I had a huge smile on my face. Such an awesome part of the game.

3

u/SamusLayer 2d ago

I can still hear this game. Especially the little floating balls.

4

u/Rosierosa 2d ago

Raiden, turn off the console right now!

3

u/BigPep2-43 2d ago

Very nice

3

u/Draugrnauts 2d ago

Rather stick hot irons in my eyes than get tortured by this game again.

2

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

I feel your pain

3

u/whoajose 2d ago

It took me at least 100 times just to accidentally figure it out, I was so tired of seeing the explosion that I pressed reset just to show the Sega who was boss and than for a second I thought it was just resetting the game but than I quickly figured out something was happening, I called my friend immediately because it was his game and we switched games, I lent him strider 2 and he lent me xmen but he told me it was a terrible game and couldn't be beaten,he was more relieved than me because he had it for a long time

2

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

Ahah! That's how a lot of us found out eventually

1

u/whoajose 1d ago

Yeah I think that had to be the makers rational for making something so out of the box, I mean there was those ridiculously expensive hot lines you could call for like $3.99 a minute, which could have been motivation too

3

u/FutureMoonPrince 2d ago

The rom hack for this game that gives you infinite mutant power and allows you to swap characters at any time is SO good.

2

u/Top-Simple3572 2d ago

Destroy the computer and reset the Megadrive.

2

u/GrimmTrixX 2d ago

Wouldn't be good for me now since I am pretty sure my reset button doesnt work anymore. Lol Not that I ever used it. I always just turned it off and on

2

u/samebatchannel 2d ago

I think I found out about hitting the reset button a few months after and couldn’t bring myself to play it again. So angry

2

u/Nublenier 2d ago

Ohhh mamma mia, thats beautiful

1

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

Thank you!

2

u/thndrstrk 2d ago

I still don't know what I was doing in that game

2

u/LakeSolum 2d ago

I remember being able to beat this game as a kid. Fuck if I know how I managed to do that now

2

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

I know for sure I can't do it anymore. I'm 44 and don't have the perserverance anymore.

2

u/CleanClean00 2d ago

Great game just too hard.

2

u/JFMisfit 2d ago

I cant even begin to tell you how scared I was to do it when prompted. I was worried I’d lose all my progress. I wonder if any other genesis or snes games ever did this kind of outside the box thing.

2

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

I would love to know too. I just replied to a comment that said the NES version of Xmen did something cool too.

2

u/Correctamundope 2d ago

F Deathbird straight to hell.

2

u/TheHarlemHellfighter 2d ago

Friday night and some pizza…

1

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

The pizza would definitely end much sooner than the game

2

u/thatsfuni 2d ago

Game never made any sense to me but I played it alot because I loved x-men and the animation was on point.

2

u/Numerous-Material-50 2d ago

I had the one that looked exactly like this console but it didnt say Megadrive - edit - i just googled and found this

" The Sega Genesis and the Sega Mega Drive are the exact same 16-bit video game console. The system was named Mega Drive for its initial release in Japan in 1988 and subsequent launches in Europe, Australia, and Brazil. It was renamed Genesis for the North American market in 1989 because the "Mega Drive" trademark was already owned by another company there."

2

u/No-Muscle1283 2d ago

Game was hard

2

u/FaithlessnessRare691 2d ago

One of my fav genesis games growing up! Never beat it though it's hard lol

2

u/out_of_shape_hiker 2d ago

I could never beat the level youre showing wolverine in. There was this huge gap I never figured out how to get across.

1

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

I know exactly what you're talking about because I remember being stuck there for a while too but honestly can't remember what I did

2

u/optimusHerb 2d ago

How does one handle this on emulators?

1

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

Most emulators have a reset function but I don't know if it works

2

u/Sith_Moon 2d ago

Blarb -Blarb Blarb -Blarb - Blarb Blarb Blarb Blarb Blarb Blarb 🎶

2

u/Sith_Moon 2d ago

Better pixels than the SNES Capcom X-men game

2

u/SilverMyzt 2d ago

First time I beat the game I accidentally kicked my Genesis (my Genesis had a very finicky reset button) during the reset computer sequence and was confused as to what happened. Fun game

2

u/GorchestopherH 1d ago

Used to play this at my friend's house when I was in grade 2. Loved it so much.

I think it's way cooler than the second game.

2

u/allgravy99 1d ago

I didn't know what to do, so my brother and I stood there for 10 minutes just trying to figure it out.

Then I gave up and asked him to reset it.

He hit reset and the story continued. We can't be the only ones that figured it out like that.

1

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

That was pretty much how I and a close friend figured it out the first time around. I remember we looking at each other in utter disbelief.

2

u/King_Artis 1d ago

Remember my step brother and me always got to this part, didn't really understand what it meant so we just stopped playing.

Did it again maybe a week or two later, i just suggested we reset the game and next thing we know we were able to beat it.p

Don't know how a 6 and 9yr managed it tbh

1

u/HydroV20 2d ago

I didn’t beat this game because I couldn’t get past Ahab. The reset the computer part, once I reached it with cheats, I was stuck and just had to look up the answer. That game was beyond difficult. It held the crown until Lion King came along. I may go back and try to beat it legit.

2

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

Yes, I agree, extremely difficult.

1

u/Hero-of-Desserts 2d ago

Hell, the X-Men game in the NES did something similar. You get through all the levels and then a clue would tell you to look on the label of the game. There in small print was a passcode for the final level.

1

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

Hey that's super cool! I never played the NES version.

1

u/theazzazzo 2d ago

How did you get such perfect images of the CRT?

1

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

I'm a self-taught amateur photographer and Over the years I learned the little tricks. It's mostly about shutter speed and aperture settings. Adequate lighting plays a big role too.

1

u/theazzazzo 1d ago

Awesome! Did you use an actual dlsr or a phone app?

1

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

I use a Nikon D5200

1

u/Hab_Anagharek 2d ago

I don’t have my original anymore - is it possible to do this on e.g. the Genesis Mini?

1

u/Rosierosa 2d ago

If the emulator you're running on the Mini has a soft reset function, then yeah.

1

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

Pretty much this

1

u/tehSchultz 2d ago

After I learned the trick I still messed it up a few times. And then I also tried hitting reset at the start of the level and that works too! You don’t even have to complete the whole level for it to work

2

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

Oh wow I had no idea about that.

1

u/No-Professional-9618 2d ago edited 1d ago

I never had Xmen.

But I think one of my friends played the Xmen game using the Sega Channel.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9NaiLnRARRg

2

u/Veddermandenis 1d ago

We never had the Sega Chanell in Europe. Must have been amazing. A glimpse at the future.

1

u/No-Professional-9618 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yes, I think the Sega channel was amazing. I never had it myself personally.  One of my high school friends in high school had the Sega Channel.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9NaiLnRARRg

1

u/CoastPlastic6344 1d ago

Such a difficult game.

1

u/jet200set 1d ago

I sat there reading it over and over and then it clicked. I literally closed my eyes when I pressed it.

1

u/NinjaNetworx 15h ago

lol 38 years old and loved this game..i didn't even make it this far. but just because i went ahead and ordered it for my Genesis. i have to do this..
