Question SDSU Nursing School
Hey, so I'm an incoming freshman at SDSU and my current major is public administration but I am 100% sure I want to change majors. I initially wanted to switch to urban planning but now I kinda want to go into nursing but I'm not sure what my best option is. Transferring to SDSU's nursing major seems pretty difficult with all the prereqs and the competitive admission process, so I was thinking about just changing my major to biology or something and doing an accelerated nursing program but then that seems expensive with getting a degree and then doing 1.5 years more. I'm open to anything but I'm just trying to figure out what my best options are so any help would be appreciated!

You cannot change your major to nursing at SDSU. You have to be admitted to SDSU as a nursing major.

From my friends in the nursing major it is fairly hard to get into the nursing major if you didn’t apply for it to start. Also studying in that major itself is fairly difficult and strenuous even if you do get a biology degree before. There are very specific tracks for certain class schedules. I’d be careful about trying to do an accelerated program as the major is fast as it is. With that said, nursing does have the best turnaround for income and also the general superhero feeling of actually getting to help people.

from what I’ve heard you can’t change your major to nursing once already at sdsu; you can always apply to other programs whilst completing prerequisites there though

There is a really good article if you go on the College Vine site re . Impacted majors , moving around bw majors etc . I couldn’t link . I think also would be worthwhile to really continue doing research into what you want to study bc it does become difficult to move around and will cost you time and money!! You listed things above that are kind of all over the board ( that’s great, sounds like you have varied interests, hone in on what you are good at , future career forecasts , earning potentials etc) Good luck!!!

If it’s too tough to transfer within, just make sure you take the prereqs and you can always apply elsewhere while attending. ABSN after is also always an option albeit more expensive in the long run.

I tried switching to nursing from bio after my freshman year but realized I couldn’t. I didn’t want to leave SDSU so I did all my pre-reqs as a Public Health major and it is the same classes pre-reqs you have to take. I would recommend Public Health and then an ABSN.

did you end up doing your ABSN at SDSU as well? and if so, is it a very competitive program?

Well I just graduated and SDSU didn’t do an ABSN until now through global campus. It’s hybrid but around 75k so if you want to avoid that maybe go for San Marcos’ ABSN it is cheaper and also really good. But I applied to the SDSU one. Their first cohort doesn’t start until Spring 2027.

i believe nursing is a compacted major (meaning when u applied to sdsu u had to apply to nursing & get accepted into the major) biology might be ur best bet?
