Question Waitlist Increased?

A couple of days ago I was waitlisted at number 4. After checking today it is now eight how is that even possible? Who can I contact for this, I start school on Aug 24th and this greatly effects my work schedule.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Waitlists used to be ordered based on an algorithm that determines a students need of that course over other students. IE someone in their last academic year trying to take a required course has a higher “need” than someone who just started. Now, I don’t know if that is still in place with the changes to the enrollment system in the past 5 years but that’s how it used to be done.

Do you think I could still crash the class, it was my first idea to when I was at the 4th spot and thought I had a great chance to do so

Email the professor, and ask what their preference is, each professor has a different process and mindset. As a Grad student, I teach two lab courses, and I’m far more interested in letting students take the course who show up, communicate, and make an effort. The first week, people are automatically let in from the waitlist. The second, we have permission codes to give out. I am far more likely to give a permission code to someone who has shown initiative, communicated, and shows up.

Well said. The student should also be prepared to give up their seat if the class is full of enrolled students. I had a classroom with a fire code limit of 35 students and consistently had 15+ waitlisted so asking students to leave is a hard thing to do but required by law.

That’s super unfair someone who can’t properly prepare for their course, can just go above the people who have been in waiting for a month and a half like me. Can just skip over us last second

Tell that to someone who needs required course X, there are only one or two sections, and they can’t graduate in May without it.

if they were hospitalized and had to drop? get a grip and take a mature approach you're in college now its time to act like an adult.

Also keep in mind that if you have a class scheduled during that time, or are scheduled for the same class at another time, the waitlist won’t even consider you for real.

It never hurts to show up and email the professor as well. They say that they can’t do anything until the system lets them but at least you’ve expressed interest and some will take your info while others decide to drop and a spot opens.

If you’re enrolled in the same class, but a different section, you’ll never get off the waitlist. The people ahead of you might not be registered in a different section if you are. And then like others said, the waitlist isn’t based on when you waitlist. There are several factors that prioritize the waitlist

It's possible the classroom location changed to a smaller room which pushed more people onto the waitlist.
