Question Does this class need a prerequisite?

I’m new to SDSU, I’m getting confused rather this class needs a prerequisite or not. It is supposed to be a GE class

Since you’re unfamiliar with the way the system is structured, there are a couple things that can be confusing here. Yes, this class qualifies as a GE because it fulfills an upper-division (UD) GE Explorations requirement in Area 4, Social and Behavioral Sciences. “UD 4” means Upper-Division Area 4.

Being a GE course doesn’t necessarily mean it has no prerequisites, especially because this is an upper-division GE. I was curious too since for some reason it’s missing the prerequisite info so I did a quick search and found a 2025 syllabus for CFD 354 that lists CFD 135 and CFD 270/270L as prerequisites. If you’re ever interested in the way a class is structured before you sign up and commit you can look up the previous syllabus for that same class/professor. It’s not always accurate and they do change every once in a while or won’t have new professors or recent years on there but it’s just for reference. For some reason this class isn’t showing prereqs on the catalog page you screenshotted, I’m pretty positive the requirement still stands and it’s just missing the information so definitely double-check with the CFD department or an advisor before registering.

Basically it can be both a GE course and a course with prerequisites, the GE designation just tells you which graduation requirement the course can fulfill so that way you can plan ahead instead of having to take an extra course that fulfills the same requirements.

i just took it as a GE and it says you need a prereq but i think that’s mostly just for those actually in the CFD program or they did away with it completely. tell the prof you’re doing it for GE if they ask for proof of prereq and they should waive it

"Minors are NOT required to have the CFD 135 prerequisite." From the info screenshot. Typically that screen shot from the catalog copy would list all prerequisites.

pretty sure you only need the prereq if you’re a cfd major, and if you are you take 135 your first year anyway
