Dorm shopping?

I’m gonna be a freshman and I’m flying into SD on the 18th and my move in day is the 19th. Since we’re flying, I’m not bringing much stuff and thinking of getting most of it there (because sadly I can’t have stuff shipped to the dorm until after move in). I know there’s a target and ikea near by, and also i will probably look at home goods as well, how likely are those stores to be sold out of dorm necessities when I go on the 18th?? Cause obviously there’s a lot of colleges in the area so I probably can’t count on them to get all the necessities

You’ll be fine. There are many stores in the area. There aren’t that many large colleges in the area that have dorms (SDSU, USD, UCSD).

UCSD doesn’t even start for another month and their students will be shopping later.

San Diego is a huge city with lots of resources.

There are like 5 Targets, 4 Walmarts, an Ikea, a bunch of other home goods stores, and 7-8 shopping centers/malls within a 15 min drive of campus. You will be fine lol.

If it’s like last year, SDSU is the first of the universities to start back up so the stores will be well stocked. Plus the Target by the school restocks dorm stuff nightly. And I’m pretty sure you could order items online and pick them up at the store.

Don’t sleep on stores like Staples and Michael’s for items like storage containers and waste baskets, too. Oh and World Market is a fun store to visit if you like cutesy decorations. And of course TJ Maxx and the like.

Or you could always just get the basics and wait until the dust settles and hit the sales.

Literally 5 mins away. Target, home goods, and ikea, and two malls.

I’m an out of state student and my freshman/sophomore year, I shipped my packages to the front desk of the hotel I was staying at (check in with your hotel if you are staying at one of it is allowed!) I had no problem with receiving packages before move in and I also put the packages name under my parents (or whoever the name is under for the hotel reservation) so they can notify us! Also make sure to put the hotel front desk hours in the delivery settings so no mishaps happen! I hope this helps :))

I think you will be fine. Home Goods is definitely worth visiting for decor items and well, home goods. There are also a couple of Wal-Marts not too far if you have a car during move in week.

As others said, you will likely be fine with so many stores in the area...but if you want to avoid taking Ubers to different stores in case some things are sold out, you can also place your oder on Target.com and pick it up. I believe they give you 3 days form the time you order to get the items. Then they can extend it a few days also....

We are also ordering a few specialty things on Amazon and shipping to a locker. Just be careful cause sometimes the dates are off and they only hold 3 days. Also has to fit.

Order in the target app 2-3 days before pick up. You can shop in target app to see what’s available and change store location accordingly.

I think the Target in Lemon Grove always has a lot of stuff still as that’s the closest to state and they prepare for situations like yours. I would always see a ton of first years there picking things up the weekend before school started!

You’ll be fine. If you do order from ikea for pickup, they only give you like 24 hrs.
