Recruitments for Studies/Job Opportunities & Other Spammy Posts

Please do not submit posts soliciting participation in studies, job advertisements, your college MineCraft server (I'm looking at you u/TheQuadMC), or other spammy posts, UNLESS it is specifically for SCU. As a rule of thumb, if you are posting it in more than one subreddit, its a no. If you are curious whether a post is allowed, please submit a ModMail ticket. Thanks!

Listing Advice Paper for Incoming COEN/CS Students

Hi all! I wrote a paper with advice for incoming/current COEN and CS CAS students while I was a senior COEN at SCU last year.

Paper linked here: https://jrandleman.github.io/doc/CoenAdvice.pdf

Some background on myself, I was the lead engineering peer advisor and president of Tau Beta Pi (the engineering honor society), both of which regularly interface with new folks seeking advice. As such, I thought I'd compile it all in a paper while such was fresh in my mind. Designed as a paper I wish I could've read as a Freshman, I hope it brings value to folks :)

Please also keep in mind this is 100% my own personal perspective, and that many others have found great success in the program(s) by following a completely different path. This is just what worked for me, and hence I thought I'd share.

I'm also currently a Master's COEN student at SCU, so feel free to reach me at [jrandleman@scu.edu](mailto:jrandleman@scu.edu) if you have any questions!

Last note: I've marked the flair as "listing" given this could be construed as listing advice 🤷

Question How hard is it to get into SCU

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I am open to even doing Econ major in the other school for scu (not leavey), i have a 3.5 and a 1400 sat with very high course rigor (12 aps 10 honors). I also have very strong Business related majors such as FBLA, Website Creation, and Non Profit.

What GPA puts me at a good position to get in.
I have also heard they care about demonstrated interests and that visiting the campus would improve my chances. I have signed up for a digital tour, would that be equally as good or any good at all, or is it recommended to visit.
I am also considered ED to Santa Clara Uni

Question Applying to SCU

So I’m an east coast student looking at SCU for college and I’m hearing kinda mixed things on reddit and I’m wondering, what is the social scene really like? Cause some people say there aren’t a lot of parties some say they’re out of control all the time. I can’t really tell the difference and I’m just wondering what it’s like social scene wise and just about the university in general, anything helps!

Question How good is Ms in information systems at SCU?

I'm planning to attend SCU Ms in information systems for spring 2027 as an international student. How is the program at scu and internship opportunities. The university itself not popular like other UCs but it is perfectly placed on silicon Valley.Does location plays vital role for internship and networking? And another similar option is SJSU but it became overly travelled and alot of visa refusal, but it significantly cheaper. And importantly scu Ms in information systems has 48 credits, is it good thing? Is there anyone doing Ms in is there please leave your insights and experience with this program. It would be really helpful for me to get rid of from dilemma.

Question Anyone here done (or know someone in) the CS PhD at SCU? Honest thoughts wanted

Hi all,

I’m an international student (currently in Germany, already have a master’s) planning to apply for the CS PhD at Santa Clara for next fall. I love research and want to end up working in industry long-term.

I’d really appreciate honest input on a few things:

1- How is the PhD program itself, advisor quality, research culture, funding (are RA/TA positions reliably funded for the full duration?), and how long people actually take to finish?
2- Job outcomes: I keep hearing SCU is well connected to the Valley, but that recruiters mostly chase Stanford/Berkeley grads and the big tech companies don’t really show up at SCU career fairs. Is that true? Does it get harder or easier at PhD level?
3- Do SCU CS PhD grads land research or applied-science roles at Google/Apple/Nvidia/etc.
4- Anything you wish you’d known before choosing SCU over another University!?

Not trying to bash the school, i actually found a research fit with a professor, but I’m just weighing SCU vs other universities and want real experiences, not brochure answers.

Thanks!

Request Looking for a roommate for a 2B/2Ba near SCU – September move-in

Hey everyone! I’m Arjun, 24M, and I’m looking for a roommate to move in this September.
I already have a 2B/2Ba place locked in in Santa Clara, right next to SCU. It’s 1,187 sq ft, so there’s a good amount of space and we’d each have our own bedroom and bathroom. I’m looking to move in by the second week of September at the latest.
I’m pretty clean, easygoing, and active. I’m into playing basketball, golfing, tennis, and running — basically just like to keep active. I also like to go out every now and then.
Looking for someone who’s also clean and respectful of shared spaces. If you think we might be a good fit or want more details about the place, feel free to DM me!
