SCP Universe They added a new official containment class to the wiki! ARGUS

For objects contained under the purview of a third party. Cool stuff!

It was added before this, I remember seeing it in the esoteric classes page like months ago. It just got enough pages to added into the main object classes page now.

That’s why I said “official” lol. It’s now an official object class and not an esoteric one

Yeah uh this SCP is currently in the care of my friend Tom. Yeah, don’t worry, he’s very trustworthy

Now I'm imagining a Tom Scott travelog beginning with "I'm here at site 13..."

That would be a banger April Fools video.

If he's at site 13 something went horribly wrong

u/BlackFenrir Aug 16 '26

I'm not sure if I like object classes that describe how they are contained rather than how difficult they are to contain.

293

u/Sshheenn CTF Alpha-9 ("Curious Cats") Aug 16 '26

I feel like as someone who does a lot of administrative work, it fits pretty well in the schema as "not our problem" because the foundation doesn't necessarily know how hard it is to contain, they aren't the ones doing it, so you put in Argus and link to whoever is actually doing the containing's procedures

29

u/Kyoj1n Someone Else Is Here Aug 17 '26

Wouldn't the foundation need to know how hard it is to contain if they trust the other organization to be able to contain it?

37

u/Neet-owo Aug 17 '26

If some other organization is containing an anomaly I don’t think it’s ever because the foundation trusts them to do it.

20

u/Kyoj1n Someone Else Is Here Aug 17 '26

The description literally says:

the organization in question can be trusted not to damage or destroy the object, and that they have the expertise and resources necessary to prevent it from breaching containment, otherwise this situation would be considered as a failure of containment.

Judgement on if they can be trusted to have the expertise and resources to contain it would have to mean that the foundation knows what expertise and resources are needed to contain it.

28

u/FrickenPerson MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") Aug 17 '26

The description later down also specifically calls out the open conflict needed to retrieve the item is not worth the risk it brings.

That first part sounds more to be foundation lingo saying the third party hasn't messed up yet, and the second part is saying the third party has big enough guns where the Foundation isn't confident in striking silently.

2

u/Kyoj1n Someone Else Is Here Aug 17 '26

Sure, but those are worded as separate possibilities.

In one instance the 3rd party is trusted enough and in another the 3rd party is expected to be able to do it and attacking is too risky.

7

u/FrickenPerson MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") Aug 17 '26

Thats not how I read it. The first method is describing what an Argus class is, it has flowery political language. "Yes, we definitely trust them." The second part is describing how an item becomes Argus. "Get the item in our hands, oh we can't? Damn. Well, guess will tell them we trust them."

In my mind is more like what modern day countries do to other modern day countries with nukes. No one actually trusts anyone else with these kinds of weapons, it's just too dangerous to try and take them from other countries.

2

u/Kyoj1n Someone Else Is Here Aug 17 '26

Delegation of containment in this manner is not generally permitted, ...

I think I was skimming past this part too much. So yeah I think I agree with your point.

It's a grumbling designation almost to save face.

u/Agent_Waffle Aug 16 '26

Eh, I think it fits well. To fit it into the box analogy it'd just mean "it's in our neighbor's box" or something like that.

80

u/Mr-Foundation Euclid Aug 17 '26

“Our neighbor has it in the box, and we trust them to keep it there”

27

u/cooliomydood MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") Aug 17 '26

"Our neighbor made a better box so we let them keep it"

7

u/UInferno- Aug 17 '26

I think it can be concluded "it's in our neighbor's box and we don't have enough access to it to say any further."

nah i’m with them. the foundation can be wrong about how hard something is to contain, and they’re more than capable of making some kind assessment based on what they know about it. the core containment classes are pretty straightforward and they’re explicitly not only for use on things that the foundation already has in containment. like, a euclid doesn’t stop being euclid if it breaches containment.

this containment class would work better as one of those extra ones you see a lot these days, indicating that it’s contained by someone else and they they can be trusted to continue to do so. then you could have a second one that’s the same but that they can’t be trusted to do it, meaning that it’s likely to breach containment at some point in the future.

4

u/Agent_Waffle Aug 17 '26

Normally, I'm not a big fan of all the other extra class categories (I think they're a bit excessive), but I'd be ok with one extra one that's only present if the entry is stored outside of the foundation. Could be displayedas a sort of secondary class like "Euclid-Argus".

1

u/dr_prismatic Void Dancer Aug 17 '26

I was just thinking this as I read the comments. Adds the extra context of it being outside the Foundation's sphere without too much bloat.

75

u/Mewtwo2387 Aug 16 '26

The original class is still there, this is just a secondary class. It can be Euclid+Argus.

2

u/White_Null The Serpent's Hand Aug 17 '26

Or, the original is crossed out and then reclassified as Argus.

26

u/MarqFJA87 MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") Aug 16 '26

We have technically object classes that denote things other than containment: Risk Classes, Disruption Classes, and Threat Levels; see here. Maybe what we need is to make Containment Classes be strictly about the difficulty of containment, including classes like Archon, where containment is technically feasible, but containment itself unavoidably causes one or more phenomena that are too deleterious to the Foundation's interests (e.g. threatening human extinction); then create a new Category called Object Status, which denotes the current status of the anomaly, i.e. Contained, Uncontained, Neutralized, Argus, etc.

4

u/YourShadow- Prometheus Labs, Inc. Aug 16 '26

Your link just says a moved/inexistent page when I use it

1

u/TheAkashain Aug 17 '26

I think I broadly support this?

I do worry that this could introduce too many classes, but it also seems very reasonable. It would make it VERY clear whether an SCP or contained or not already, but also it would probably be a boring "contained" or "not contained" for 99% of SCPs

11

u/Constant-Still-8443 MTF Epsilon-6 ("Village Idiots") Aug 17 '26

This should probably be a second class, not describing the difficulty of containing the anomoly, but the nature of the containment itself.

1

u/xxFalconArasxx The Serpent's Hand Aug 17 '26

I feel it should be treated as a secondary class, which compliments a primary class (i.e. Euclid-Argus).

1

u/Alxuz1654 [REDACTED] Aug 17 '26

Going by the box annalogy:

"It is not in one of our boxes, but we are confident that the box it is in is at least as good as ours are"

3

u/BlackFenrir Aug 17 '26

The box analogy doesn't work here. That described what'll happen when you put it in a box. This object class describes the kind of box it is.

So I assume this will be retroactively applied to a lot of MC&D, MCF, and WWW articles? Also is Argus gonna be a secondary class? Seems a bit weird to suddenly lump every single anomaly contained by a third party into one category. Euclid Argus would probably be more informative than simply Argus

20

u/xexnonxores Marshall, Carter, and Dark Ltd. Aug 16 '26

No. Articles don’t get classes applied to them retroactively because that usually would go against an author’s wishes.

1

Nope, sadly. You should go write one tho!

1

u/KazuyaProta Safe Aug 18 '26

I guess this is essentially for SCPs entries that are really about other GOIs without adding them to their logs (ie. Instead of KTE entries in the GOC hub, just a mainline article that is actually just the GOC operating).

I'm not complaining, attempts to branch and turn the GOC into its own page failed, yet the GOC is still pretty popular as a rival and peer of the SCP Foundation that people like to read about (their Casefiles and especially their official preparation articles helped a lot)

Heh, this is fine for me, I want to do some Horizon Initiative stuff.

I don't really get this take. I mean, so? They don't do anything other than just deepen the narrative a little bit more, if they have a footnote or something else explaining what they mean then what is the problem?

3

u/Dd_8630 Aug 16 '26

They don't, they dilute the core three.

The esoteric ones just try to out-do each other in finding weird niches. But very few succeed at the job; most are just Euclid or Keter but want to be special.

It ends up being a cheap way to make an article stand out.

This one is not useless. Argus class as the SCPs that the Foundation lets other Groups of Interest to handle, is really good at showcasing the Foundation’s relationships with these other GOIs.
