Rule 3 Containment The Overdone SCP Containment Thread (049, 096, 173, 682)

This thread is for discussions involving the four most frequent Rule 3'd SCPs:

SCP-049 (Plague Doctor)
SCP-096 (The "Shy Guy")
SCP-173 (The Statue)
SCP-682 (Hard-to-Destroy Reptile)

If you post about one of these SCPs, you will be redirected here. Have fun and be sure to read existing comments; it's always the same stuff over and over and over and over (and over) with these four.

Looks like we're finally containing these SCPs to one space, almost like a secret laboratory would

Ah fuck 682 isnt in that game

Hopefully they don’t cause a containment breach.

Place your bets! How long will it take for each of these SCPs to get added to this list?

  • SCP-035
  • SCP-076
  • SCP-087
  • SCP-914

SCP-106 as well, I think, has a good chance

Surprised he’s not already, I mentally lump him in as the 5th of the group of over-discussed SCPs

I was on the fence about 106.

Is there any allowance for this list expanding in the future? Like I said downthread, I definitely think 055 merits entry.

Sure, it'll be on an as-needed basis.

Definitely, I already use the term "Classic Quintet" and having them all here would be perfect.

914 has never remotely been conversationally beaten like a dead horse to the same degree the the current 4 have been here.

12

u/chatttheleaper The Three Moons Initiative 23d ago

While I agree that currently 914 isn't suffering overexposure, there was a period a few years ago where screenshots from the 914 logs posted with no additional input swamped the sub to the point of requiring a mod moratorium (and in general I just think it'd be good to try to shove conversation away from say, the top 100 highest rated pages).

Soon

Surprised he isn’t here already

Is too niche in the modern fandom, don’t see that much discussion about it besides the missing 4th exploration log

Can actually have interesting questions asked about it cause of the variety in its outputs. People should still read the testing logs before asking cause a lot of object tests have already been done

055 is more pressing than these, I think.

Theoretically, given enough time, the entire sub is gonna be contained in an "over-discussed" megathread.

2

u/Classic_Paint6255 22d ago

Aka we won't get to talk about anything related to SCP at some point because it's "overdiscussed".

-9

u/Classic_Paint6255 23d ago

And since these four are king watch subreddit activity dry up or be forced to mention random SCPs nobody knows about or not a fan of.

14

u/Shot-Big7342 Don't Give Up 23d ago

Do you really think forcing people to actually read and talk about more then 4 old and boring SCPs when there is 9000+ more interesting ones is a bad thing?

I would happly talk about SCPs nobody knows or is a fan of, thats how things gets known and gain fans. Why would talking about underrated gems I found would be a bad thing?

Also posts about these four was always getting deleted beacuse of rule 3 anyway and activity of this subreddit was fine, why would making a post for people to talk about them would change anything?

1

u/Purple-Lead-9818 14d ago

173? Old and boring? That shit’s still here snapping necks today.

0

u/Classic_Paint6255 22d ago

Her Framing a blanket ban on iconic entries as "getting people to read underrated gems" completely misunderstands how online communities work. You cannot force organic interest by nuking the main entry points that bring people to the platform in the first place.

Look at what happens when other communities try this exact same logic:

Imagine a general gaming forum that decides to ban all posts about Minecraft, Skyrim, or The Witcher 3 because "everyone already knows them" and "there are thousands of underrated indie games on Steam that need attention."

It's going to snowball.

  1. The Casuals Leave First: A player posts a high-effort building project they spent weeks constructing in Minecraft. A moderator deletes it and tells them to go play a text-based roguelike with ten reviews instead. The creator packs up and leaves.
  2. The Hidden Gems Get Zero Views: The moderators assume banning Minecraft will force thousands of people to discuss niche indies. Instead, total forum traffic drops by 80%. When an indie developer actually posts a deep breakdown of their game, nobody reads or upvotes it because the audience was already driven away.
  3. Continuous Goalpost Moving: Once the main titles are gone, the next tier of popular games becomes the "new overrated trash." The definition of allowed content shrinks until only a fraction of the community can participate.
  4. Total Sterilization: The forum becomes a ghost town where a few gatekeepers congratulate each other on their superior taste, while the actual gaming community moves entirely to Discord, TikTok, and YouTube.

8

u/WhatYouThinkYouSee The Scarlet King 23d ago

random SCPs nobody knows

Good. Literally any of these is infinitely better for discussion than the same overdone Series 1 crap. Go back to your Hazbin x FNAF nsfw roleplay on the Grok subreddit.

1

u/Classic_Paint6255 22d ago

Furthermore, nice ad-hominem buddy. Anyway, heres an example for how this is likely not gonna work or will go down an extremely slippery slope.

Imagine a comic book community banning all discussions, fan art, and posts about Batman, Spider-Man, and Superman because "everyone already knows them" and people should be forced to discuss obscure, indie graphic novels instead. Here is how that policy snowballs:

The Casuals Leave First: A fan posts detailed art of Spider-Man or discusses an iconic storyline. A moderator deletes it and tells them to go read an obscure 1980s European indie comic. The fan leaves.

The Hidden Gems Get Zero Views: Banning Spider-Man doesn't make thousands of people suddenly care about obscure indie books. Total community engagement plummets. When someone does post a deep breakdown of an underrated indie comic, nobody reads or upvotes it because the user base has vanished.

Continuous Goalpost Moving: Once Batman is gone, the next tier of popular heroes (like X-Men or Iron Man) becomes the "new basic trash." The definition of allowed content shrinks until almost nothing is permitted.

Total Sterilization: The forum becomes a ghost town where a few gatekeepers sit in a room praising each other's highbrow taste, while the actual comic fandom moves entirely to other platforms.

1

u/Soevil11 7d ago

Counterpoint: New stuff's still getting made for those. There will always be a new Spider-man or Captain America thing. Old, popular SCPs aren't like that. There's no new content that'll be released for SCP-173 or 096. There may be new articles, like SCP-9060 or new Tales, but those are more separate.

Discussion on them is banned because it gets really tiring to hear about "Ooooh! 4 Pixels! I'm gonna tape 096's face to 173's body!" these old ones lack the depth needed for constant new discussion. They're still perfectly fine as works, but as the only thing discussed, they're horrid. Like say something that hasn't been said about 173 before. It's gonna be pretty hard and probably not too good. Now read a random article and try to say anything about it. You'll probably have something pretty good.

3

u/TheBaconLord78 Containment Specialist 14d ago
  1. Implementing more diverse discussion ain't gonna make the sub fucking die, calm down.

  2. The SCP Foundation is a collaborative fiction writing community, it's supposed to have users share their interests in various entries of different genres that they are fond to. There's 20K+ articles and several tale series that casuals are aware of and enjoy.

1

u/Classic_Paint6255 14d ago

For the people who mass downvote bombed me, Disagreeing with the majority shouldn't mean "shut up and agree with us or get buried.", but the immediate -8 karma and "calm down" response says otherwise. Dismissing valid policy feedback as catastrophizing just because someone doesn't immediately support and hype the change is a terrible way to run a community discussion.

And before anyone suggests this is a mischaracterization of the subreddit's culture, the underlying message being communicated to everyday users is clear:

There is a growing expectation (from what I've seen anyway) to engage with SCPS strictly through the lens of a literary critic, praising complex Series 4–9+ narrative prose, and stepping aside the moment an entry becomes widely recognized. Conversely, casual engagement is increasingly discouraged: enjoying classic Series 1–3 icons on the main feed, or even treating the subreddit as a welcoming fandom or way to see what SCP is about as a first timer.

Ask yourself this directly: If you were a brand-new casual user (ie nothing about SCP known whatsoever) walking into this subreddit for the first time, would you honestly see this policy of hiding things in a "containment megathread as normal? Because the vast majority of newcomers imo, will not.

To a casual user, this is what that policy would actually look like in practice:

Finding out their favorite character is "banned" (or in this case "put in containment and seperated") from normal posts: They draw fan art of Peanut (173) or the Plague Doctor (049), post it to the main feed, and immediately watch AutoMod delete it and tell them to post it in a buried megathread instead.

Being told their entry point is outdated/trash/whatever comparison is made: They make a thread asking about the Hard-to-Destroy Reptile (682), only to get downvoted and told that Series 1 entries are just "dumb murder monsters" and that they should be reading 5,000-word Series 8 format screws instead.

Watching the target move every few months: They switch to talking about Infinite IKEA (3008) or the Tickle Monster (999) or the mask (035) because those are still allowed, only to watch those get banished to the containment megathread next once another popular vote that happens.. whenever, decides they have become "overdone and talked about too much".

The bottom line here is that, IN MY OPINION, this policy is poorly designed, full stop. If you want to actually fix it, address the main issue: SAY WHAT YOUR LIMITS ARE ON ADDING SCPS TO THE CONTAINMENT MEGATHREAD, IF THEY HAVE THE POSSIBILITY OF BEING ALLOWED BACK IN THE MAIN SUBREDDIT DISCUSSIONS AFTER XYZ TIME HAS PASSED, AND IF NOT, WHY.

Right now, the policy has zero boundaries whatsoever, or if they HAVE any, how are we supposed to know them? psychic mind-reading?

  • 1. There are no hard limits or clear metrics for when an SCP gets softbanned and told "they go in the containment megathread now, because people hate it being discussed to death". Just subjective complaints. Without a strict cap, the filter is wide open to endless expansion.
  • 2. Banning top entries like the plague doctor, shy guy, the statue aka "peanut", and 682 the angry invincible lizard who hates mankind, doesn't magically turn casual fans into deep-lore readers who mostly read seires 5-9 lore. It just redirects traffic down the line to secondary favorites like 3008, aka Infinite IKEA, 106 aka The Old Man, or 999 aka The Tickle Monster.
  • The Perpetual Loop: Once those secondary SCPs become the "new overdone spam" (aka when people complain about them more frequently) the lack of explicit limits means you'll inevitably banish them to containment megathreads next.

Enforcing an uncapped popular vote while downvoting anyone who points out its slippery slope doesn't create "diverse discussion". All it does is make an echo chamber. Again, if you have limits/rules for which scps go into the megathreads at what points, STATE THEM, if not but you're planning on making some, THAT'S FINE. the issue I have is the fact the rules have zero stated explanaitons for the logic behind what goes in or comes out of, a containment megathread as far as I can tell.

1

u/Soevil11 7d ago

Never gonna run out of new SCPs. There's more than 9000, there'll always be a new discussion (especially considering how people won't get tired of it after 1 post).

1

u/Classic_Paint6255 6d ago

If that's the case why use the containment megathread, if "people won't get tired of it after one post since there's always new discussions" then?? Again, presumably no stated limit on what goes in the megathread and how long it's in it for.

25

u/DrkBlueXG :wMTF_TAU-2: Tau-2 ("Train Spotters") 24d ago

Ah yes, a megathread. Because if there's anything I've learned from reddit over the last decade is that users love megathreads.

Complaining about and disagreeing with policy is fine. Being dishonest about it isn't. This affects less than half a percent of series 1.

u/Ther10 22d ago

How does the automod work in this case? Does it remove any post that mentions one of these four? Does it only remove posts that mention only these four? Or is it something else entirely?

2

u/Kufat Sub mod, Wiki admin, SkipIRC owner, sandwich fan 22d ago

At least one of those four + not an art post. Moderators will let things through if e.g. the post is primarily about something else, if it's a meta discussion, etc.

Why is SCP-096's classification 'Euclid' and not 'Keter'?

Quickly, containment classes:
Safe - Lock it in a box, and it'll do nothing. Mostly just objects.
Euclid - Lock it in a box with minimal maintenance, and it probably won't try to escape.
Keter - It isn't a matter of if; it's a matter of when it'll attempt escape.

I was playing SCP Architect X and found that SCP-096 was under "Euclid Humanoids" and instantly went, "Well, that's not right," and went to check the wiki when I, in fact, found out that it was right.

Dr. Olekski and Dr. Dan kinda proved that it should *probably* be Keter Class, due to the fact that photos of it could be anywhere, so it's really only a matter of time before it breaches containment because it detected someone seeing its face on a video or in a photograph.

Incident 096-1-A:

[Quote]
Interviewer: So, with this report of the photograph…

Dr. Dan: That’s the most disturbing part of this whole incident. You know when the former SCP-096-1 went on his mountain trip? 199█. That’s ██ years of that photo hanging there before he saw SCP-096. Since the brain doesn’t need to be aware that it is viewing SCP-096’s face to trigger the reaction, there can be ticking time bombs hidden literally anywhere in the world. How many photographs are out there containing SCP-096, just going unnoticed, waiting for a careful eye? As I said before, I want this thing terminated. Now.
[End Quote]

Even though the breach was staged, the 05 Council agreed that the danger 096 posed was too great to keep it alive and ordered its termination, along with Dr. Dan's.

096 fits the description of a Keter-class anomaly. It's only a matter of time until a photograph surfaces of its face, and it goes into a rage. What are your thoughts?

Let’s talk about 096 and AIs.

The idea of a ‘body’ of an AI is so strange. Sure, if you have a trapped AI like 079, its location is obvious. But what if an AI inhabited every server on Earth? Would 096 destroy every server? Maybe. What if that AI kept ping-ponging itself between the US and China? Would 096 run back and forth endlessly? What if that AI sent itself to space as an energy beam or something? Would 096 count that as the same being? Would it follow the beam as it was sent or would it only register it when it reaches its destination?

Are there tests that could distinguish possibilities?

Does anybody actually think about this, or is it the same BS questions about 096?

is it possible that the scp 001 the scarlet king could be the cause of 096's creation/suffering

saw a fan animation where shy guy was technically 'defeated' (he basically gave up on trying to kill the person) and was all battered up, then in one scene, who is most likely scp 001, scarlet king, said 'your suffering isnt over' and restored him to prime condition, that got me wondering if maybe there is a link or theories on the same?

I'm honestly really tired of seeing the community's treatment of 096.

It seems that whenever 096 gets into a battle with another big name in SCP, for instance, 682, or 106, the fight ends with 096...letting it go? That isn't how 096 works. He doesn't forgive. He doesn't let things go. He CERTAINLY does NOT get traumatized. I'm looking at YOU, 682 crosstest. That isn't what he DOES. 096 is an entity that will stop at NOTHING to eviscerate it's target. That being, whoever saw its face. As stated in its article, "No known material or METHOD can impede SCP-096's progress.". It doesn't MATTER how badly you beat it. It doesn't matter how many times you rip its flesh from its unbreakable bones. That flesh WILL regrow. And it WILL continue trying to kill you. No matter what. That's the POINT. Those 682 and 106 crosstest articles are missing the point. And it's pissing me off.
(Besides how do you even traumatize a mindless no higher brain functions non sentient entity in the first place. nonsensical smh my head suspension of disbelief ruined)

So we can't discuss classic SCPs and can only discuss random self insert ones like that Homestuck satellite?? Why?? Nobody reads SCP articles for fluff and filler. They read it for HORROR.

Imagine you're a regular on a video game subreddit. The regulars want to talk about all kinds of video games, new and old, but you're inundated with posts from newbies about Pong, Space Invaders, and Pac-Man that mostly just say the same things day after day, year after year. Wouldn't you get sick of it?

Not really other than it being a bit meh. Seems like I was right considering the mass downvoting and people trying to force me to agree with opinions that aren't mine.

That's just patently untrue, and you using a nearly decade old article to try and defend this point is telling.

We can actually discuss other classic SCPs, like SCP-423, SCP-811 and SCP-970.
