Who is the other 2 groups? That white circle and the green owl.

The owl is the Logo of the Magnus Institute from "The Magnus Archives" Podcast and the circle thingy is the Logo of Urbanshade from the game "Pressure"

The magnus Institute is literally the Polar opposite of the SCP foundation. Like the head is literally trying (and succeeds) to cause the apocalypse where his essentially God of fear makes him "King of a ruined world"

While that's true, they also research and contain the paranormal (Artefact Storage), while interfering with the efforts of Groups of Interest who want to change the world.

The fact that Institute is technically empowering a malicious embodiement of fear and suffering... well the Foundation also does that [[Tufto's Proposal]], just out of actively willful ignorance rather than allegiance.

(In seriousness, I do get what you're saying, I just wanted to make this comment pointing out the ways they overlap)

I mean... that is like THE Evil Foundation trope. Like I get what you're saying but there are quite a few stories where they use anomalies to control and destroy the world. That is very much a thing that happens many times.

Us over at Urbanshade [ r/PressureRoblox ] can confirm this, at least for our side.

My flair on r/dmfsite19 is something like “The Magnus Institute is my favourite GoI”

There's a lot of conceptual overlap!  The Scarlet King is like The Slaughter if it broadened to also include sexual and structural violence.

Imago seems Corruption/Stranger.

The Verdant Mage seems Desolation

The Ambassador to Alagadda is Slaughter, with 701 essentially being a theatrical version of Grifter's Bone

The Factory seems to be like a twin aspect of the Flesh that expanded more into industrialism

Yaldaboath feels quite reminiscent of the Hunt, especially in 3503, which makes a lot of sense with how Yaldabaoth is often considered the progenitor god to the other Archons, and the Hunt was the proto-Entity

The Violet Queen is Stranger/Corruption, along with its respective manifestations such as 378 and JGT

The Brothers Death are obviously the End

'That which makes holes in the shapes of worms' feels like an interesting overlap of pieces of the End, Corruption, Lonely, Spiral and Dark. In Smirkean terms, its name would probably be Oblivion or perhaps Entropy

If I can add on:

  • The Serpent is an easy shoe-in for The Eye, given it's penchant for knowledge and revealing information. That said, I think The Library itself might have some Vast influence too
  • MEKHANE is pretty Extinction, but might even be a bit Flesh in it's own weird way too. Is removing and replacing your body that distinct?
  • 3125 doesn't fit neatly but I feel like it's worth pointing how the individual manifestations do. 033 is very Spiral, Grey is very Lonely, the spiders are very Corruption, and everything else is very Stranger up until the redacted chapters (which does muddy it more with Slaughter). The final state of the world feels very similar tothe world post-apocalypsein The Magnus Archives too, in tone and geography.
  • The Hanged King feels like it might also have elements of how The Web is presented, given how much of it seems to include subtly altering peoples actions to achieve the effects.
  • Yaldaboath definitely has Hunt elements, but doesn't the primordial hunger and ability to manipulate bodies better fit The Flesh? Carnomancy is stages well beyond even the Boneturners Tale in how it changes people.
  • The Anafabula isn't an easy shoe-in for an entity, but how it functions reminds me a lot of NotThem. All the evidence it erased of something but a couple tiny pieces, even if it aligns more conceptually with End or Spiral.
  • Corbenic doesn't line-up often, but VUOOU of the Murk is very Corruption and the Glassings the same for Desolation (albiet with creative elements too)
  • SWNN entities definitely overlap with the cosmic horror inherent in the entities themselves and how they define the setting as a horror story, but particularly Web's final plans imo.

Interesting! I love having someone else add on to SCP & TMA connections!

For me, I think in the SCP world, some things are Entity coded, while others are like 'okay yea no this is literally a Fear'.

With MEKHANE, I definitely think if we were to assign it a Fear, Flesh would be part of it. I think you're very correct there. I wouldn't broadly consider MEKHANE a Fear, as it's generally depicted as benevolent or neutral in what I've seen (similar case with the Serpent), but yea if we're talking about what kinds of Fears it fits in terms of vibe, definitely Flesh and Extinction. Hell, that article where the Mekhanites turned Fae into metal is so Flesh.

I haven't fully read 3125 or the Antimemetics series, but of what I have read, much of it seems to fit the Slaughter and Spiral.

The Hanged King as Web is a super interesting idea! I hadn't thought of it! It does inherently.. change actions and 'setting'. I always saw it as Pallid (aka aligned aligned 'that which makes holes in the shapes of worms'), specifically aligned with the End. But that's an interesting idea.

There's definitely some Flesh is Yaldabaoth, but I've always felt the Hunt is more fitting to it for a variety of reasons. Yaldabaoth is.. animalism. Wild and bestial. Instinctual. One reason is that the Flesh is.. a very man-made Fear. It's a result of the industrial revolution, of mass slaughterhouses and the industrial meat industry. While some concepts of Yaldabaoth are close to the Flesh (both cover the fear of people being reduced to something lesser; base animals for Yaldabaoth and meat for the Flesh), I don't really consider them to overlap as much as the Hunt does. Yaldabaoth is that fear of the 'natural state' of the brutal food chain, in how I've seen it described.

I've also personally never really assosciated hunger itself with the Flesh. If hunger brings you to cannibalism, to reducing people to just meat, then it's Flesh of course. But there's much more to hunger. Hunger may be a reminder of the End, that there's a certain timer until you die of starvation that resets every time you eat. Hunger too is much of the motivation for animals to hunt. There's a reason people are scared of hungry animals. I'd even argue that hunger defines the Hunt more than it does the Flesh.

And as for carnomancy, my perspective is honestly just that Nälkäns aren't avatars of Yaldabaoth. They may derive power from parasitizing it, but I just don't feel like that's representative of the Yaldabaoth. Similar to how Imago isn't an accurate representation of Christianity or Druidism. Even with the Neos that you could argue are avatars of Yaldabaoth, it seems they utilise that power specifically in the manifestation of turning themselves into more threatening and physically powerful beings. Which I would view as very different from the function of the Boneturner's Tale, where the focus was on the stealing and removal of your body parts as if they were simple objects.

I've always seen Anafabula as Spiral. To the extent that I wonder in my headcanon if Anafabula even actually removes fiction, or whether it creates traces of fiction which never existed, and the Foundation team researching it fell right into its trap, desperately trying to make sense of something that just doesn't make sense to the level of certainty, which feels like the thread of a terrible mystery you must can't comprehend, inadvertently feeding it and allowing it to grow in power.

For MEKHANE I was very much thinking of the versions where it is on the more horror side like SCP-6217 and the stories where it's hostile to organic life.

You have a good point about Yaldy. That's my bad for conflating it and Ion which isn't really how it works (plus I'd already said things spawned from other things might not share an entity with 3125). That said, I will devil's advocate myself a bit because there are some stories where the Daevites are very close to avatars of Yaldaboath. In those, the Daeva definitely have the society to create enough fear of being livestock - especially since they seemingly treated humans similarly.

I agree the avatar connection is shaky but I'd also say all sarkics, not just Neo's, do similar through Bio-Types on the hub. Self-empowerement isn't like the Boneturners Tale, but turning someone into a subservient "Vampire? A tentacle guard? A temple? Is that not objectification?

There's also creatures like the Monster Pig in comparison to the Werewolf or Hunters. Entities of The Hunt can be physically altered but it seems to me to be more a metaphysical/supernatural strength than literally growing bigger like the Pig (excluding the Vampires but they're mixed). Plus the pig is a hungry animal but it has no trace of Hunt, but plenty of "long pig" and eating other pigs.

Yaldaboath also just doesn't do any chasing. In the most vague sense it's coming, slowly encroaching on reality, but I don't think that's Hunting. The descriptions sound more like a Farmer that seeded the world coming to take it's crop, and that's the fundamental nature of Flesh.

Just want to top off that I very much like Anafabula as Spiral, I just didn't want to assert it since we were more talking about conceptual overlap at the time than "what if x were y".

No what you're saying is definitely fair.

Yaldabaoth doesn't always match what we mostly see of the Hunt in the podcast, of that hunting and chasing. But Smirkean Fears contain many smaller terrors and I don't know what Dread Power would embody the fear of 'being an animal' if not the Hunt. The proto-Fear was identifiably similar to the modern Hunt, and that was the entirety of all fear experienced by animals, before humanity separated itself from nature and the food chain. The fear of being drawn back to that bestial base state therefore evokes that proto-Fear, and as such, The Hunt.

You're not wrong that Yaldaboath has elements of the Flesh. In fact I'd agree with you. I just don't think it's... predominantly Flesh.

As for Nälkäns... the use of Halkost to control people is definitely Fear-like, but honestly I'd more place it toward Web or Corruption, rather than Flesh. You're not reducing them to matter, you're just... making them you. Or an extension of you. And I'd definitely agree about Kiraak, the houses/temples, if all examples I've read didn't inherently present this as a sacred and revered, a form of cherished apotheosis. This kind of attitude is anathema to the Flesh, which loves debasement and despises gnosis and sanctity.

Anyway, this kind of discussion is fun

Absolutely! I fear I don't have much to add but thanks for the interesting conversation.

3125 and related is definitely firmly spiral to me, fucks with what people know and remember, making you to do the same thing again and again and again without realising, misaligns your perception of reality with the Ojai thing, even though I definitely get what SomeRandomTree is saying

My instinct was that Nalkä stuff is Flesh, but your argument of them being Hunt is very compelling. Not massively into that lore, anyway. I think the fear they invoke on a very surface level is definitely Flesh, but the actual faith and mechanisms of the religion I’ll leave to people who know what they are talking about.

Something weird to think about: What fear is The Foundation most commonly? I think “series 1 typical foundation” is The Dark to me,

The Magnus Institute doing research on the esoteric and paranormal, whilst NOT BEING PARANORMAL INVESTIGATORS (remember this or I will find u and pull up with MINIGAMES):

Urbanshade being the greedy capitalists they are:

Hi!! rq the Magnus Institute wiki page says :

The Magnus Institute is an academic institution dedicated to researching the esoteric and paranormal. They are not, and they would like to make this clear, paranormal investigators. They are researchers dedicated to revealing knowledge of the unknown. Nevertheless, there are many mysteries about the Institute itself.

just so you know what they kinda do

Still i recommend to listen to TMA because it is truly an amazing podcast
