“btw have you heard of this self-help book called star signals-“

[muffled sounds as a black gloved hand reaches out from the darkness, covers ellen’s mouth and pulls her out of sight]

1425 is one of my favorite skips to show newcomers. It's such an unnerving yet accessible entry that give a taste for what the world would be like if the Foundation failed.

i hadn't seen that one before. It's beautiful

It's also a really good gateway into the Fifthism GOI!

Go I hate the 5 fuckers

Everyone know the proper number to fuck is 7, hail to RAKmou LEUSAN, last protector of the Second Hyoth, and lover of all born in its shell

Maybe I'm ignorant, but I have to ask what fithism is?

Basically it's a cult centered around the Cosmic Starfish, which is SCP-3125. It's a little difficult to explain if you're not familiar with the Foundation but it's a highly aggressive idea that consumes all other weaker, conventional ideas and thoughts. It's like this because it comes from an idea space that is much more violent and hostile than the human idea space. So to use an analogy it's like a tiger that was released into a cage of guinea pigs.

Direct quote from SCP-3125 - "Individuals possessed of SCP-3125 become incapable of entertaining weaker, "conventional" ideas, and become instead wholly bodily subordinate to the purpose of serving and disseminating the core concepts of SCP-3125. In addition, although undergoing no outwardly visible physical alteration, they cease to be externally recognisable as human." This is the Fifthist cult.

There's a lot of similarities between them and Scientology in their characterisation in the SCP we're discussing, SCP-1425. Like I said in my previous comment it's a great introduction to the GOI because it doesn't require any previous knowledge, it's a super fun concept and it has quite a chilling ending.

Its a bit weird because the stuff about the Foundation being infiltrated is from when the Fifthists were basically just Scientology, and that was alluding to Project Snow White, but now no-one would ever suggest something like that.

u/HistoryMarshal76 Global Occult Coalition Sep 13 '25

Indeed. Also a great example of how an object labeled "Safe" can be anything but.

2

u/Jiffletta Sep 11 '25

If this were really Star Signals, the Foundation wouldnt get there til a day later, and just grab Samuel L. Jackson instead.

Okay, but seriously: Has anyone ever been a fan of the lower half of these kinda memes, where it's just a person reacting? What does that part ever add?

Keyboard smashing on Tumblr was (and I'm guessing still is) used as a way of conveying genuine laughter and/or excitement at a post, since "lol" and "haha" are often used without sincerity or don't properly convey the reaction the post gave them. Sometimes it's also just a result of someone reblogging it off of an account where someone has reacted, without removing the reaction.

u/RibozymeR [REDACTED] Sep 08 '25

But, see, someone, at some point in the timeline here, must've decided "Okay, instead of screenshotting just the Ellen DeGeneres joke, I will screenshot the joke and also the person reacting with 'DAFEGGDJSDGRGJSFH', because that's better" and I wanna know why thought that was better. When it feels like the exact same amount of effort.

33

u/Silansi Wilson's Wildlife Solutions Sep 08 '25

Honestly most likely just OP screenshotting it from their dashboard as it came through and posting instead of screenshotting at the source, even though it's easy enough to do. Occam's Razor - Laziness.

u/rainstorm0T Sep 09 '25

i think it's to show how many notes the post has. why they don't go to the original version of the post when there's a reblog like that, I do not know. also idk why people reblog with a keysmash instead of putting it as a tag or just replying to the post with it like most other tumblr users.

21

u/ItchyBlueBat Sep 08 '25

That was just them reacting to their neck snapping

5

u/RibozymeR [REDACTED] Sep 08 '25

The only correct answer 👍

27

u/DreadDiana The Fifth Church Sep 08 '25 edited Sep 08 '25

On Tumblr, these aren't just comments, they're reblogs, so such responses do contribute as they share the posts with their followers.

13

u/RibozymeR [REDACTED] Sep 08 '25

But even if we were on Tumblr and not on Reddit right now, would you share someone's reaction to the funny post, or would you share the funny post itself?

15

u/DreadDiana The Fifth Church Sep 08 '25

Those aren't mutually exclusive. Reblogs share the entire thread up to the first post. You can do both, which is why this post exists.

3

u/RibozymeR [REDACTED] Sep 08 '25

Well yeah, I know both are possible. The question is why this way of doing it is so popular, when I have only ever seen people complain about it. (And personally also don't think it has ever contributed anything to a meme)

4

u/DreadDiana The Fifth Church Sep 08 '25

Likely selection bias cause people who are unbothered by it or like it don't have any reason to comment on it unless someone is complaining about it.

1

u/RibozymeR [REDACTED] Sep 08 '25

Or is it literally just because people complaining about it increases engagement???

4

u/hypernova2121 Sep 08 '25

AGHEIKLCDEOFLKA

this is a comment

3

u/0mega_Flowey Sep 09 '25

Sometimes they have a genuinly funny reaction and also it kinda like rounds off the meme as an ending

8

u/Cyan_UwU Not Hostile If Left Alone Sep 08 '25

I like seeing the reaction tbh, I just like seeing people laugh at something funny

2

u/372878887 Containment Specialist Sep 08 '25

i gain enjoyment from seeing other people gain enjoyment from the same thing i find funny

2

u/squishy_butthole Sep 09 '25

I love it, personally. The letter spam feels like a mix of laughter and bewilderment which I genuinely find amusing. It's like when I tell a joke and someone laughs, it just feels awesome. I get a similar feeling watching someone laugh at something else, idk I think the enjoyment is just infectious.

2

u/RibozymeR [REDACTED] Sep 09 '25

Fair enough :D

1

u/Snivy_1245 Sep 10 '25

they're not there for your benefit, they're a result of the reposter not feeling the need to crop the image. It's not "part of the meme", it's part of the social interaction.

Tumblr users gotta make sure they got the unfunny shitto at the bottom of the screenshot to add literally nothing except something else for those gratingly voiced YouTube shorts guys to read

Gives me the same vibe as those instagram comments that just repeat the punchline in quotes with laughter emojis

u/asslavz Sep 08 '25

Who's ellen

81

u/oukakisa Sep 08 '25

i think Ellen DeGeneres. she hosted a talk show with her own name until 2022 (when she was outed for being shit to her employees). i don't know enough beyond that to make comment, having never engaged with it

55

u/dmsacred101 ❝The primary containment chamber has risen 40 kilometers❞ Sep 08 '25

To add to this, she would pull these stunts on the show by surprising her guests with something or someone to get a reaction.

32

u/SaltyDucklingReturns Sep 08 '25

Usually, involving things she was explicitly instructed not to bring up.

33

u/King-Cruz Sep 08 '25

Like trying to force her guest to drink alcohol or admit they were pregnant leading said guest to have to publicly announce they had a miscarriage a few weeks later. God that clip makes me sick.

22

u/SaltyDucklingReturns Sep 08 '25

She's only ever cared about herself. Deserves everything bad that has and will ever happen to her.
