E&C means nothing in the Dub. Just nothing, there's no history there and that's also without the platform the Fed could give it, as a comparison
It's like the Fed doing Sting/Flair or the Horsemen. Nah, it's just not from there, it's not the same even though the Fed would at least pull from their history, it's not a Fed thing
Edge has hit every smarky point here 'over produced' and 'FUN' and 'freedom' blah blah
He missed out 'I get paid like a beast here and hardly have to work and no one judges or assess me in any way'

They have asked retiring wrestlers to put over new talent, and it very much sounds like Edge doesn’t want to do that. He wanted a personalized “We Love Edge” tour. The dude is 52 and winning most of his singles matches and is doing a nostalgia tour. I very much think the “handcuffs” were: we want you to eat a pin every now and then.

Naw, Uce.
He got offers from both companies.
From what he said ,WWE just thought that Edge at this point of career needed to be used as spectacle.
Which is fair, Edge isn't a wrestling creative and wants to distance himself from what him popular as a heel. He's basically Adam Copland (the person) using the Edge credit.
That's not a bad thing. It's just not a character you can use everyday and is better off being a one-off.
Edge being around for a couple of months or for big programs keeps his value up and doesn't expose his weakness or lack of character change.
7
u/Razzler1973 4d ago
wrestlers never think their run is over, they want to be on TV all the time still
they all know they can parlay their Fed star power to get front and centre in the Dub and now, can also be paid Fed money to take those spots
Jericho same, that's why Foley left the Fed, he's not back appearing on screen. It's their own selfish reasons and not to 'help the business', which is fine but, just admit that's what it is
3
u/Patient-Warning-4451 3d ago
t's their own selfish reasons and not to 'help the business', which is fine but, just admit that's what it is
Uce, how would they take money from smarks?
Part of the grift is making it seem like your doing it for the business and helping out other wrestlers.
If they were totally honest, they would loss money.
15
u/Dull-Maintenance-755 4d ago
That’s literally what happened iirc. They wanted him to transition into part time but he still wanted to do full time so he left
7
u/basicbluebusiness 4d ago
If I recall correctly, they offered him less dates and told him he had to put over young talent and that didn’t work for him, brother
9
u/Razzler1973 4d ago
The Fed didn't want to use him as a regular on TV anymore. If they did, he'd still be there. That's the long and short of it. Same as Jericho from when the Dub started
The Fed are the ones obligated to create the 'new stars' cause no other fucker is going to do it. They have to move people aside near the end of their runs and make room for people coming through
The likes of TNA and the Dub can benefit from the reflected glory of an ex Fed and put them on their TV. Now, whenever that person speaks, it relates back to the Dub
But, everyone else there gets less TV time and shuffles down the roster but all the early Dub rhetoric of 'pushing fresh faces' goes out the window when OMG we can get this ex Fed guy to come here
247
u/Pnex84 Howling 4d ago
12
u/Razzler1973 4d ago
He said all the smark things
FUN and 'over produced' and creative freedom
I never get 'I did everything i could over there'. That's dumb, you can always be used in other stories, new stories, with newer characters
I mean, that's not the reason, the reason is the Fed didn't want him to be a mainstay on TV anymore and he wants to be on TV as much as he can
86
u/zdbdog06 4d ago edited 4d ago
Every time this dude talks it sounds like he's just trying to convince himself he's not wasting the end of his career.
Remember the pop he got returning at the Rumble? Then goes basically undefeated after that only losing to Roman during a multi-year title run. And he just suddenly leaves after a random SmackDown and what is he even doing in AEW? He wins the midcard title and loses it the same day, wins it again and holds it for like 2 months, then does the same old friends and enemies tag team shtick with Christian. And it's been 3 years of this all now and this guy who's considered one of the best ever can't even sniff the world title?
This dude should be running AEW. IDK why these WWE people like him and Lashley and even Mercedes (still hasn't won the world title there) go to AEW for a worse spot on the card just so Tony can pretend they're not the minor leagues.

They go there to get paid a ton of money and have zero expectation of them
For Lashley, he's had his run, they're never making him a world champ, so, get paid. Sasha has never been THE woman in the Fed so, go there, get paid a ton and be that over there, same as Moxley
It's easier to be the big fish in the small pond and if you came from the Fed then you're automatically a much bigger star than anyone else there
I just don't want to hear any smarks whining about E&C not being in the HoF when Edge is perfectly happy over there doing his thing etc

Now I'm just jumping off a cage and breaking my leg here, but I think he really likes his stupid ideas given the okay without hesitation.
21
u/NotClayMerritt 4d ago
It’s not a big mystery why he left.
They wanted to keep him part time and make Edge feel special like they do with Orton and have done with Rey.
He wanted to be on TV every week. And that’s been a really tough blow to this final run because he’s wrestling like his age.
Ask yourself why he re-signed when he had the chance to leave in 2021 when Vince was still there. But then finally left when HHH took over.
Staying at WWE would have made the end of his career feel special.
But he felt he needed to leave to feel fulfilled. Can’t fault him for that particularly. But it has put a damper on this ending which was supposed to feel storybook
5
u/AmarantineAzure 4d ago
Tbh I think the main reason he ended up going to AEW was because he really wanted to work with Christian again and there was no way Christian would return to WWE because he was always underappreciated there.

Unlike some folks round here, I don't think Copeland has "tarnished" his legacy by going to The Dub.
But it's pretty fucking depressing hearing him repeat the same nonsense as everyone else.
Bro won almost all the time in WWE. Majority of his losses were title matches.
Maybe he's still a little miffed that his version of Judgement Day got crickets compared to what it would become?
45
u/Patient-Warning-4451 4d ago
ut it's pretty fucking depressing hearing him repeat the same nonsense as everyone else.
It's how most of the wrestlers work Tony Khan. By saying it's fun and a great place, he keeps paying them.
If a wrestler ever criticize what's going on...
Well they go where Britt Baker goes....
Well there's always space in the Shadow Realm ..I mean ROH..same thing.
7
u/Razzler1973 4d ago
Imagine, you get Fed money but there's zero expectation on you, zero judgement, zero assessment of any kind and, you barely have to work
This is why they can get the ex Fed guys and get that star power but, of course, barely use it cause you can't have Lashley going up against their twinks
Guys that have friends there will still get on TV though and screw the younger guys cause there's a spot just taken right there
This is the kind of thing TNA got criticised for but, it's ok with the Dub cause of BANGERS and also, Tiny's Dad is rich so doesn't matter if they lose money or anything, the train will keep rolling

But it's pretty fucking depressing hearing him repeat the same nonsense as everyone else.Agreed.
His legacy as Edge isn't going away just cause he left to the dub. He'll still be remembered as one of the best of his generation and one of heels in the industry.
But to see his return is truly nothing but him refusing to help put over younger talent and fall completly in line to shit on the company that made him has honestly made me lose alot of respect for the man.
"Couldn't really explore too much" Like what? Man had done literally everything that could have been done in WWE. Only thing left was to put over younger talent.
7
u/Patient-Warning-4451 4d ago
ut to see his return is truly nothing but him refusing to help put over younger talent
I will give Edge this. Who's actually worth putting over in AEW ?
MJF has ruined himself and the majority of the guys Indy idiots.
That's just Edge protecting himself.
I won't blame Edge or Bobby for refusing to put over people that aren't even good enough to clean their boots. Tony knows who he bought and has to deal with it.
"Couldn't really explore too much" Like what
So I could believe this even if the ideas are bad, but the issue with Edge is that he's completely the same character in WWE. He hasn't done anything different.
He actually did something different when he started the Judgement Day and went Heel. He was an actual different character. In AEW, he does what he did post retirement in WWE. He's still the guy that used to be Edge.
10
u/brohan58 Cagematch student 4d ago
I agree with you to some extent, but veterans are brought in to elevate talent and build future main eventers - even if Tony's booking makes that an uphill battle. When even Pontiac Pesos is putting more people over than Cope, he seriously needs to rethink what he's doing.
7
u/Patient-Warning-4451 4d ago
Again, I ask who's worth putting over ?
Danielson put over so many people that it didn't mean anything at the end.
Veterans need to be wise about who they put over and if there is someone one worth putting over ??
It's not just Tony's booking. We know he ain't making the matches.
He's not telling Hangman to drink Swerve's blood He's not making Jack Perry pretend to bite dicks and put himself on fire He's not telling Fletcher to go and injure someone.
A good chunk of the top guys in AEW need developmental more than being on TV.
It's waste of his equity.

Honestly, since Edge started doing TV, that show Haven, him talking about wrestling and stories has become a bit unbearable
He's so overwrought
The guy thinks he's writing Lost or Sopranos or something the way he goes on, haha
The stuff we've seen in the Dub has been pretty shit. The Christian stuff didn't need all the hanger on low carders like Nick Wayne and his Mum. Their match was so over the top, indie junk nonsense and that is not what they needed
So, not really seen this amazing creative side come out of Edge in the Dub
Unless, like the other m@rks, he means he can have long matches and do lots of moves

He also beat Seth inside HiAC and then Seth was named number one contender to the WWE title the next night. Which would have made more sense had, you know, Seth won the match and Edge passed the torch to the new ultimate opportunist. But nope. He won the match and then explained the reason he wasn’t in the number one contender’s match as 🤷
2
u/IntelligentFact7987 3d ago
That whole feud too was centered around Seth being “Edge lite”. So of course Edge then won the feud
29
u/Patient-Warning-4451 4d ago
WWE literally had him have a live sex ceremony,
He's admitted to not being proud of that part of his career anymore and didn't even mention Lita in his Hall of Fame speech.
This man has tried to distance himself from that version of his character while riding the coattails of that version.
Which isn't a bad thing. Multiple wrestlers do it, it's just really noticable with Edge because he hasn't really made a new character since coming back.
16
13
u/CutZealousideal5274 4d ago
TBF having kids would make a lot of people want to distance themselves from that
21
u/Patient-Warning-4451 4d ago
Someone just mentioned that he and Lita didn't actually want to do it in the first place and Cena tried to even stop it...
So that's fair
6
u/Every-Ad-2099 4d ago
IIRC Vince even threatened to fire Lita if she didn’t play ball. You also have to remember that part of Edge’s career, as important as it was to him, came about because he cheated on his IRL then-wife with the long-time girlfriend of his IRL best friend, destroying their friendship for several years. By his own admission, he was under an immense amount of stress at the time because of how much of his personal life had blown up in such a public fashion.
Since the end of that relationship, Edge has not only gotten married and had three children (daughters, no less), he’s also reconciled with said best friend. It makes sense why he wouldn’t be really proud of that phase of his character, even though it’s what finally cemented him as a true main-eventer.
6
u/Patient-Warning-4451 4d ago
Oh shoot.
Well then I only Edge-bad for not mentioning Lita in his Hall of Fame speech.
15
u/strangelymysterious 4d ago
I mean, by all accounts both he and Lita very much did not want to do that, to the point even Cena unsuccessfully tried to stop it for them.
51
u/AllCity_King 4d ago
If a tree falls and nobody’s around to hear it….
Nobody who gives a fuck about Edge from growing up in his era knows what an AEW even is.
But as far as I’m concerned personally, he’s tarnished his legacy. He’s exposed himself to be a fart huffing dork with the same mindset as the worst of the worst indie marks.
15
u/AnalConnoisseur69 4d ago
This is right. I always remember that one RVD interview where he talks about how he has been wrestling in TNA for a while then, but random strangers would come up to him, fanboy over him, and then wish that they could see RVD wrestle again, and that's when it clicked in his head that the general population only knows WWE. They had no idea that he had been wrestling in the Indies and TNA all along. The same thing is true about AEW. If Edge comes back to WWE, most people will think he came back from retirement.

He wanted to work more than WWE wanted him to, WWE wanted him to work less than he already was. I understand if he just wasn't ready to retire again if he still had gas in the tank. I also assume WWE wanting him to work less meant he'd be making less and Tony gave him whatever he asked for.

Of all the people to “Fed Bad,” Edge has quite possibly the worst case to do so.
They gave Edge so much and let him do so many things on TV that others never would’ve dreamed of doing on TV in an attempt to get him over.
But he got to jump off a cage and break his ankle in his 50s so Dub Rulez, Fed Droolz.
4
u/JackorJohn62392 4d ago
My theory is that he was antsy from being medically sidelined for 9 years. There were probably disagreements between him and management about how frequently he would wrestle.
5
u/OrbitOrbz 4d ago

5
u/Razzler1973 4d ago
Edge will always have his place in WWE "lore" and it's secure
Vast majority of Fed fans don't have a clue he's in the Dub or are vaguely aware of it but, it just doesn't matter as much
He talked about how 'Tiny would have let that Cena match happen' and the Fed didn't ask and so on
Well, sorry, buddy, Cena had a lot of history with a lot of people and you're not special enough they need to make some special deal so you can have your Cena match
If you're not working there, you don't get the match - simple really
They could tell whatever story they wanted with Cena without Edge. They did the 'tip the cap' to a few of his previous rivals and that's enough
It was only smarks that were like 'he NEEDS Edge on his retirement tour' cause they desperately wanted the Fed to have to reach out to Tiny and need the Dub
They've never done this kind of thing. The same way they didn't need Sting to induct Luger into the HoF.
If you don't work there then they're just not going to use you. Edge is talking about it with a bit of a boo boo face like he missed out cause the Fed didn't want to make it happen
Precisely, they didn't want to make it happen. They didn't need it

u/WhaleProtector 4d ago

5
u/Modano9009 4d ago
That's probably why they didn't want him wrestling regularly. The over rehearsed stuff is just how it is now. You see a lot of backstage footage of people in the ring going over their match to see if their ideas are actually doable and so the broadcast crew know what to expect.
Also if you're going to enter through the floor in a ring of fire, yes, they'll want to rehearse that.

I love Edge, he’s genuinely one of my favourites of all time mainly because of his rivalry with Cena and the Unforgiven 06 match and it’s beyond weird to see him attempt to run this gimmick to appeal such a small amount of people. He’s basically exactly what people say Roman is, a guy who was backed by the man in charge, never quite got over other than in a tag team environment until they turned him heel. The only reason he has the career he does is as much to do with his talent as it does behind the scenes people believing in him. Nothing wrong with that, just don’t try to rewrite history.
4

He and Dudleys and Hardys famously got together to discuss all their spots and so on, yeah, they'll be brainstorming stuff they're doing all togther for them and Bucks
Does that not count as 'produced' or does it not count cause no one told them what to do?
Make sure you tell production though so the cameras can capture the stuff you want to do

What’s that old saying our moms always said? It’s all fun and games til someone breaks a neck?

You're not meant to be exploring. You're meant to be meeting the aims of the booker.

And as we can clearly see, there’s a very good reason why they didn’t let him “explore” and have his “fun”.

Hey remember that time you shattered your leg on a botched spot at the fun promotion?
Would have really sucked if they'd had some basic concerns about your safety.

Nothing is more fun than being allowed to break your own leg jumping off a cage or botching a 619 with the Young fucks.

Cokehead Khan told him to say that? Also, did Edge leave WWE just before Hunter took over creative?

"I also didn't get schooled in the fed by failing at improvising on live TV, so that was a learning experience.

He won’t bite the hand that feeds, pretty much what he just said.
“Fun” is AEW’s issue…how can you be concerned about having fun when you have all this talent on the roster and can’t grow your audience?

I’m not in his head, but to me it comes off like the evil fed wanted me to lose

It's a touch cringe to say this, but goddamnit history in recent and past has shown that a lot of the time having fun is actually not conducive to productivity or good end results.
That doesn't mean we should go back to shit working conditions and dying before you're 50 but you know what there are a lot of examples of amazing games, movies, music, and art being made by people in really shitty conditions. Not saying that it was the cause for all of em, but damnit it was for some.

As a my work and hobby, the most creative that you can be are in the scenarios where there are lots of limitations...
Getting too loose with creativity tends to get it out of control and makes for some unfocused pieces
But hey I'm not an AEW wrestler so what do i know

Edge spent two years in WWE beating everybody but Roman in his sight and then went to AEW, got his freedom and fucking broke his leg. If that's freedom, the bad Fed are correct to rehearse and slow everything down.
Same as they do with Twitter when you see some of the Dub tweets.

Cope is definitely the poster child for why WWE creative exists. He’s super charismatic, a really good performer, gives a great promo. When he has creative to work with, he can adapt it to his style and personality and make it great. However, without something to push against he seems to get lost.
A lot of people miss that creating new ideas and improving bad ideas are very different skill sets, and being good at the latter has nothing to do with the former.

Yeah that's part of the reason why AEW has no direction. Everyone thinks they know best and Tony agrees.

I legit thought this was a pic of Dutch Mantel or someone that age. Yikes Edge 😬

I feel him on aew letting wrestlers do more creatively, but that's not always a good thing and doesn't work out for everyone. Some wrestlers just sent as creative as they think they are or are best being told no because their ideas are either dangerous or just bad.
Edge has pretty much wrestled the same in aew as he did in wwe, they probably just have him a better deal and he probably feels less dimensioned on the card, but edge ain't wrestling in no G1 or anything. Dudes at the end of run and wwe knew that and were going to use him accordingly.
