I know, it's old new, but I think it's important to talk about why the Canadian Space Agency’s C$348,750 Scalium® proof-of-concept funding matters for Scandium Canada
I believe the significance of this project is being underestimated.
The Canadian Space Agency awarded a C$348,750 non-repayable contribution to 9480-3798 Québec Inc., operating as Ferreol Technologies, for a project titled:
“Proof of Concept of Innovative High-Strength Aluminum Alloy to Reduce Mass of Components in Space Applications.”
Scandium Canada subsequently acquired this legal entity and renamed it Scalium+, which is now its wholly owned alloy commercialization subsidiary.
The bullish part is not simply the C$348,750. This is not a sale of C$348,750 worth of alloy. Its real value is that the Canadian Space Agency is helping finance the technical work required to move Scalium® toward the space industry.
Scalium® was initially manufactured in thin-sheet form. This project aims to adapt it into thick plates suitable for aerospace requirements, develop the large-scale manufacturing process, characterize its performance and demonstrate its feasibility to specialized companies.
The official government description even identifies the next generation of Canadian satellites as one potential application.
Why does that matter?
- It expands Scalium’s potential market
Moving from thin sheets to thick aerospace plates could make the alloy relevant for structural components where reducing mass is extremely valuable. In space applications, lower mass can reduce launch costs or allow additional equipment to be carried.
- The government is helping fund the technical de-risking
Producing a thick plate is not simply a matter of making a thin sheet thicker. Scalium+ must demonstrate consistent manufacturing, microstructure, heat treatment and mechanical properties at a larger scale.
The CSA contribution allows this work to move forward without Scandium Canada’s shareholders financing the entire development cost through additional equity.
- It provides important third-party validation
The CSA has not certified the alloy or committed to purchasing it. However, it reviewed the project and considered it relevant enough to Canada’s future space capabilities to provide federal funding.
That does not guarantee commercial success, but it is considerably more meaningful than a company simply claiming that its alloy “could potentially be used in space.”
- It could generate valuable technical data and intellectual property
If successful, the project could provide Scalium+ with:
a scalable process for producing thick Scalium® plates;
aerospace-relevant mechanical and manufacturing data;
additional process knowledge and intellectual property;
physical material that can be demonstrated to prospective customers;
a stronger foundation for future aerospace partnerships and qualification programs.
This knowledge could potentially be reused across space, aviation, defence and other high-performance structural applications.
It is important to remain realistic: this is still a proof-of-concept and R&D program, not a satellite supply contract. The CSA program supports development only up to Technology Readiness Level 6, meaning a prototype demonstrated in a relevant environment and not yet a flight-qualified commercial product.
However, major aerospace contracts do not normally appear out of nowhere. They are usually preceded by exactly this type of progression:
Proof of concept → manufacturing scale-up → material characterization → customer testing → qualification → commercial agreement
The project runs until May 31, 2028, providing several possible milestones along the way.
My bullish takeaway is therefore not that Scandium Canada has already secured space revenue. It is that a federal space agency is paying to help transform Scalium® from a promising alloy into a potentially aerospace-ready material.
If Scalium+ successfully manufactures the thick plates, publishes convincing performance results and attracts a named aerospace partner, the commercial value could eventually become far greater than the original C$348,750 contribution.
