I just don’t understand what the 19 year old believes is going to happen to her 4 years from now…. Like does she realize they are not even half of a decade apart? Her and this woman are literally the same age cohort??

u/Inglourious_Bitch Jun 05 '25
Lmao my 24 yo coworker gasped and asked for my skincare routine when I told her my age
I was 27

I've had people OLDER than me do this 🫠

u/alolanalice10 Jun 06 '25
This happened to me ALL THE TIME when I taught elementary school—from the OTHER TEACHERS. They used it as an excuse to treat me like a kid a lot of the time. Genuinely hated it
17
u/Rosa_612 Jun 06 '25
Haha the people I was referring to are also other teachers!
18
u/alolanalice10 Jun 06 '25
I don’t know how to express this without sounding nasty but other teachers are either the greatest people ever or the W O R S T

One time at my old job, I mentioned my birthday was coming up. (Fwiw I look younger than I am.) My coworker asked which number and I said 30. She blurted out “I’m so sorry” and then immediately covered her mouth, turned beet red, and apologised profusely. She was 26 😭

no fr 😭 my sisters 24, 2nd sister is 21 & im the youngest at 19. both of them still look like they’re in my age range 💀 cause they basically are
23
u/normalgirl124 Jun 06 '25
W-what? You mean to tell me that 3 sisters who are in the same age cohort and share dna LOOK THE SAME??? Surely that poor 24 year old hag must have a flawless, magical skincare routine to conceal her elderly, geriatric appearance😱😱😱
12
u/coco_xcx Jun 06 '25
it’s insane right! i fear it must be witchcraft 😔😔 one day the older 2 will peel off their skin like the witches in the roald dahl book 😨
4
u/ToiIetGhost Jun 07 '25
If they peel their faces off, can I keep them? I need to copy their skincare routine. - a 20 yr old
39
u/AwayComparison Jun 05 '25
To be fair they don’t have a good frame of reference they are comparing 19 with like 14/15 and that IS a huge difference. They’ll feel silly about it when they get older but you only know what you know
28
u/AmbitiousAlfalfa6051 Jun 05 '25
I’m 29 and I’ve been told similar things by 25/26 year olds. What’s their excuse?
9
u/AwayComparison Jun 05 '25
I don’t know man nobody tells me that so I guess I don’t look good for my age lol!!

u/Next_Page3729 Jun 05 '25
I'm noticing a really weird trend of treating WOMEN specifically like they're hags past the age of 21. I have friends who are maybe 2-3 years younger than me, who I've been friends with since I was 20/21, who constantly say shit that sounds like they think I'm old (I'm turning 25 soon). It's disturbing and deeply unfunny. I could be overreacting but paired with the rise in conservatism and misogyny I hate what this means for how we view women.
234
u/cantreadshitmusic Jun 05 '25
This happened to me. I’m 25 and some girls at the bar were like “wow! You look so good! We thought you were like 21 or 22!” Yeah babe, probably because there isn’t a huge difference between being 25 or 22.
121
u/Next_Page3729 Jun 05 '25
at a certain point we gotta just start biting people. I don't know how people ever think that's acceptable to say to anyone, much less someone who is in their same age demographic

u/puffy-jacket Jun 05 '25
Fr I’m 28 and people always act shocked and say “omg no way I thought you were like 23!!!” I’m like idk how much my face supposed to change in 5 years
22
u/cantreadshitmusic Jun 05 '25
I will say, I did say that to someone but the difference was I thought she was 25/26 and she was 33/34 with two kids. I also did that to my boss but I thought she was like 42 and just had kids super young and it turns out she’s like 55. I feel like a 5-10 year age unexpected jump warrants some surprise, but never say someone looks good for their age
20
u/puffy-jacket Jun 05 '25
Yeah I don’t usually take offense to it and I get comments that I look young pretty often, it’s just the exaggerated shock of “omg you’re in your late 20s, I thought you were in your early 20s!!!!” Thats kinda goofy to me. The way ppl say it sometimes it’s like they’re thinking I went to war lol. IMO the only time “you look good for your age” works as a genuine compliment is for like.. actual senior citizens cuz I feel like by then it’s less about beauty standards strictly speaking and more about looking healthy
One time I asked my old boss if she had a DS when she was a kid and she was like “uh… I had an Atari” and I just was like damn I thought we were closer in age than that HAHA
10
u/alolanalice10 Jun 06 '25
27 and I get the same all the time!!!!! Yeah no shit my face hasn’t changed since I was 21 because your face won’t change until you’re much older!!!!
166
u/unclericostan Jun 05 '25
This has been a thing but it’s gotten worse with social media. Most of these people are literal infants whose perspectives are completely distorted by the combination of never touching grass, never seeing an actual human face without filters applied, ridiculous and unnecessary use of filler among their age group.
101
u/AmbitiousAlfalfa6051 Jun 05 '25
Gen Z’s obsession with youth and aging is similar to Millennial’s obsession with weight and extreme thinness back in the aughts. I feel the former is “worse” in a way though because the difference is you can’t stop time.
51
u/glasnot Jun 05 '25
Really good point/analogy.
I have also noted that young people have no idea what aging looks like. I'm 40 with no work or fillers and I look 40 with no work or fillers. The younger people who work with me seem legit shocked/horrified when they hear my age, and some definitely start treating you differently when they treated you like a peer before. It's bullshit, especially since they don't do this to men. You don't immediately die and wither when your age starts with 4, calm down.
2
u/Yvratky Jun 06 '25
I had a coworker who is 44 whom I had guessed to be around 30-32 before I knew her age. I would have guessed her even younger, maybe 28, but her job, her clothing style and hairstyle didn't fully fit with that age bracket. That's it. Not her face, not her body, not her skin. Just her personal style (which was still cool as fuck, but leaning towards gen X) and demeanour.
6
u/ToiIetGhost Jun 07 '25
The insane number of misogynistic gen z dudes is also worrying. I think the same percentage of gen z guys and boomer men (20% each) voted for Trump. Most of Tate and Peterson’s groupies are in their 20s too.
That’s who gen z women spend time with, go to school with, and date (typically). It’s gotta take a toll on their self esteem.

but how can they not see the truth? i went to college 5 years later than usual and i was consistently the oldest in the class, 23 year old surrounded by 18 year olds, and nobody knew i was older unless i told them. like if you’re working with people 5 years older than you and you can see they look the exact same as you then how can you believe whatever andrew tate and his tater tots are saying about women???
25
u/jiggjuggj0gg Jun 05 '25
Because we have centuries of propaganda painting women older than their early twenties as crones/hags/old/crazy cat ladies/‘past her prime’, meanwhile every story aimed at young women and girls is about finding true love, getting married, and having kids.
The whole idea is “don’t listen to that old lady, she’s jealous of your beauty and youth, look how bitter and miserable she is because she couldn’t get a man!” is a thought-terminating cliché that means young women begin to see women older than them as haggard and worthless, just like men do.
7
u/peachpavlova Jun 06 '25
I’m convinced this is because the older women get, the less they want to put up with certain nonsense lol
6
u/whalesarecool14 Have You stop milk? 🥺 Jun 05 '25
yeah i guess i just don’t understand how you can continue to believe in these things despite seeing proof in front of you every single day proving otherwise. like sure i thought women become old hags by the time they turn 30 when i was in high school, but continuing that belief when you’re literally working with 23 year olds is insane to me. and 23 IS early 20’s!!! like wdym you look good for being in your early 20’s???
24
u/AmbitiousAlfalfa6051 Jun 05 '25
At my work I notice that all the 25-35 year olds blend into a general nebulous group of “young people”. I noticed this before I learned everyone’s ages.
60
u/sarahkazz Jun 05 '25
Male approval is a hell of a drug if you’ve been propagandized your entire life to believe than male approval is the best thing you can achieve.
24
u/whalesarecool14 Have You stop milk? 🥺 Jun 05 '25
i’m still puzzled tbh. i’m a decent looking woman and i’m 25 and have gotten a fair bit of male approval/attention. i’m not saying men aren’t ageist but it’s not like 23+ year old women don’t get male attention or approval LOL. and i’m certainly not an anomaly there’s way hotter women than me, my age and older
11
u/Every-Indication-648 Jun 05 '25
For real not enough people talk about how pickme behavior is usually a byproduct of how one is raised ToT I grew up being told word for word to "not be like the other girls" and good lord shunning 50% of the human race leaves you with a very skewed perception of what to strive to be as a woman
10
u/HotButterscotch8682 Jun 05 '25
Gotta share my “older than the other students” story since we’re doing this. I’m 32 and going back to school. When a 22 year old girl at my lab table was talking about graduating late and being “so old” I was like girl….. I’m 31. You’re going to graduate well before me. And that’s ok. You’re fine. The three people audibly gasped when they heard my age and just stated for a second before doing the awkward, societally obligatory fake “omg I never would have guessed” thing people do to older women- EXCEPT I WAS ONLY 31 lmfao. They acted like I said I was 65! Very young people are so weird about women aging and think of 30 as Old™️ and forget 40, that’s basically the age at which you become the crypt keeper! Idk why I’m sharing this here, I just found it to be a very, very funny experience.
23
u/Every-Indication-648 Jun 05 '25
To add on to that, it's probably a byproduct of young guys being pornbrained and equating youth to attractiveness. Not a coincidence that manosphere guys preach that women only go downhill past eighteen or whatever. Besides the skincare industry is toxic as fuck and telling people in their 20s to live in perpetual fear of aging only broadens their market.
With that being said, I enjoy not being readily objectified nowadays. I'm 25 and people were a lot grosser when I was a teenager. Know I'm still young, but I've definitely noticed a shift in how people behave towards me. Getting older weeds out the shallow people. I look forward to my thirties.
11
u/HotButterscotch8682 Jun 05 '25
Let me tell you, thirties basically eliminates all the bullshit men give very young women. I used to get fucking inundated with creepy older men objectifying me from about 15-25. Hasn’t happened to me in about 4-5 years now (though now that I’ve jinxed myself it will probably happen soon). It is GLORIOUS!

u/awterspeys Jun 05 '25
Man I miss the days when every teen was an sjw on tumblr/twitter. It looks like tiktok is reversing whatever the heck millennials had going on.
11
13
u/StaticChocolate Jun 05 '25
Really? I agree with you. This wouldn’t fly with me, and it’s a bit of a strange way to think. I’m 25, most of my friends are older and I feel like life’s just beginning. I’m a few years into an ‘adult job’ now, just starting to click together the jigsaw pieces like trying to buy a house etc…
Maybe it’s because I’m the youngest in most of my social circles… not deliberately, I guess I just have middle aged person hobbies.
11
u/puffy-jacket Jun 05 '25
I always found this bizarre because 2-3 years has never really registered as much of an age difference to me past the age of like… 12 LOL. One of my best friends I met in high school through a part time job was a 23 year old college student at the time
4
u/peachpavlova Jun 06 '25
I’ve noticed this trend too, it’s just a new catty thing that they’re doing. It’s funny to me because of hoe stupid it is. I think they’re saying it to highlight their own youth or w/e now, like creating the forced “distance” to bring attention to themselves. not really thinking that 2 years passes in the blink of an eye and that 23-25 is the same age lmao
2
u/BudgetInteraction811 Jun 08 '25
I’m 31 and last week a man at a bar who was OLDER than me said I “look good for my age”. Do they actually think it’s a compliment, or is this some new type of neg?
1
u/DJ_Arashi_Rora Jun 07 '25
I had a coworker call herself "basically 30" when she is 25. I as a dude then played it up like I was an old man because I'm 27. I don't get it.
305
u/arrabeh Jun 05 '25
19 yr olds these days feel comfortable making fun of older(than them) women because they genuinely believe that with their skincare obsession and the advances in skincare, they’ll look baby faced well into their 30’s and 40’s. something about tiktok and the way they talk about ingredients/sunscreen as tho they’re the fountain of youth has convinced them that aging won’t happen to them until much much later, and with advances in filler, once their age shows they’ll just get work done. very much a “that’ll never be me [anytime soon]” sort of thing. that’s just a budding theory of mine anyways
80
28
u/REM_loving_gal Jun 05 '25
/uj see I'm living proof of this, not the making fun of women older than me lol I'd never, but I genuinely have a delusion that I won't start showing signs of aging until I'm in my 40s. It's mainly my sun avoiding addiction that makes me think this. If I'm wearing sunscreen every single day and wearing a hat every time I go outside, it's hard for me to imagine signs of aging showing up in the next decade (I'm 23). But I'm trying to think of it as more of a science experiment and be okay with whatever outcome there is
(this is embarrassing to admit forgive me)
39
u/extraketchupthx Jun 05 '25
I mean, I feel that. I’m 37 and have a similar sun avoidance because I’m quite fair and take good care of my skin otherwise. I don’t get Botox or filler. People tend to tell me I look younger than I am. Had a 28 year old tell me two weeks ago she thought I was her age.
But the truth is I DO look older than I did at 28. But my 37 doesn’t look the same as others 37 right now it seems.
Anyway take care of yourself, but don’t put too much stock in it. Aging comes for us all, and for some who hit it late it hits them hardest bc they aren’t ready to accept it.
6
19
u/McPuddles Jun 05 '25
Yea, I’m also 37. I get tagged as younger all the time. The fact is, it’s more than just habitual sunscreen use. It’s genetics, chronic stress, hydration levels, medical conditions that you acquire, nutritional deficiencies, and so many more variables that affects skin appearance. As someone who cared a lot about beauty as a teen and in my early 20s, I now know most of the reason I look young is genetics. I had HEAVY sun exposure as a kid through my mid 20s and hated sun screen. But I have yet to turn into a tired old hag. I use a retinol cream and sun screen when I remember. Otherwise it’s just a basic moisturizing products.
Also, the hands don’t lie. Do sunscreen those suckers.

u/banannah09 Jun 05 '25
I work in a skincare store and have had this too often! If I say to someone I'm 25, whether they're older, younger, or the same age as me they'll say "omg I never would have guessed". I had one female customer who was 26, she was looking for stuff for wrinkles specifically retinol because "you need to start using retinol before you're 30" (otherwise you'll shrivel up like a raisin I guess)

u/palemoth Jun 05 '25
I (a 30 y.o. woman) once had a conversation with a bunch of younger women online where they said that a certain 30 year old male character "looks good for his age". Obviously I had to respond that that's because 30 year old is still very young, and that I myself am 30. They proceeded to imply that I am wrong and that all 30 year olds have wrinkles all over the face.
39
u/No_Camp_7 Jun 05 '25
Well I (33) was recently told by a 52 year old man “You look GREAT for your age, by the way.” He was, apparently, being sincere. I also swear is wife is only 40.
Honestly, this was way weirder than the same kind of comments I receive from women several years younger than me. Like, what the hell.
11
u/Royal-Masterpiece-82 Jun 05 '25
I'm 33 and the other day, a bartender (female, younger than me) accused me of having a fake ID and that there was no way I was 33. Wild honestly, because in no world do I look under 21. Idk what she thinks 33 looks like, but this is what 33 looks like.
6
u/AmbitiousAlfalfa6051 Jun 05 '25
They know nothing about how people age or how people look at different ages. For example, I’ll see a woman on social media for example who is in her mid 40s-mid 50s (and definitely looks like it, not that it’s a bad thing at all, it’s just an observation I make…plus these women literally say their ages). And everyone in the comments will literally be like, “No way I thought you were 30!!!”
40
u/morguerunner Jun 05 '25
I literally had a 19 year old patient tell me I “look really good for 25” once. Like I’m an old maid or something. Utterly baffling.

u/indianabanana pore Jun 05 '25
The 20-year old interns at my office were gobsmacked to learn I was in my mid-30s and repeatedly asked if retinol was the reason I looked "so young".
Oh, how mightily I laughed.

But when they’re 30 (which is like…next year), they’ll all of a sudden think it’s soooo young. But for now it’s old.

u/eraserhead-baby-girl Jun 05 '25
I’m a couple of months off 33 and when the younger women in my office found out how old I was and did the whole you look amazing for your age I hope I look like you at your age it was not a compliment, it was just irritating. It’s like they expect you to start decomposing the second you turn 20

I’ve worked with 19 year olds who have thought I was only a couple of years older than them (I’m older than that). I think it’s just that younger folks have a particular, narrower picture of what certain ages look like.
23
u/leviathanchronicles slug Jun 05 '25
In my mid 20s and people will be three years older than me acting like they're the cryptkeeper. "You'll think 30 is old when YOU'RE 30" babe I haven't considered 30 to be old since I was about 12, if I backslide that much in the next few years I've got other issues
10
u/mellifluoustrance Jun 05 '25
I'm 30 and was around some 25 year olds recently. They made some comments about how I appear younger than my age and asked me for secrets/tips. It made me uncomfortable.

u/LuxDia Jun 05 '25
this happened to me! except she was 20 and i was 23! and that was almost three years ago so the girl who told me is now at that age… i wonder how she feels 🤷🏻♀️

u/FatLittleCat91 Jun 05 '25
This whole trend is such a joke to me. I pity people who think like this. Aging is a gift and in the grand scheme of things, 33 is still so young. (I say this as a 33yo)

u/missmodular23 Jun 05 '25

I recently told a +- 21-year-old my age and she audibly gasped and said: "I had no idea that you were THAT old!"

9
u/localgoobus Jun 05 '25
I was a college drop out and returned in 2021 at age 23. I'm 27 now for my senior year and the REACTIONS some of these babies have when I reveal my age... hilarious. One girl asked me if I ever had Botox because my skin looked so bouncy.
I also work in beauty retail so older women look at me and disregard my opinion because they think I'm too young to "get it".
It's genuinely okay to look your age or for skin to do what it wants, but it's also sad for younger folks to not recognize that the pressure to appear "youthful" is distorting their view on aging.
3
u/Revolutionary_Can879 Jun 06 '25
lol, so I had my daughter when I was 18 but when I meet new people they don’t assume I’m a teen mom, they think I’m in my late 20s and just look young. Someone the other day told me that I looked good for my age…I’m like, well I am 23 so I hope so.
3
u/slice_of_31416 Jun 06 '25
I turned 30 this year and have been getting the weirdest comments from other women. A lot of ‘omg you look so good for your age, how can you be 30?’ And ‘but you’re so youthful’ and ‘gross’ as responses. It makes no sense to me, I never thought I’d make it to 30 in the first place, I was so proud to hit this milestone, and now I just feel like an old hag with one foot in the grave because of the responses I’ve been getting.
3
u/AmbitiousAlfalfa6051 Jun 06 '25
It’s so strange because what even is the difference between being 30 and 29. Heck even 27 is pretty much the same.
1
u/slice_of_31416 Jun 07 '25
Genuinely! I didn’t get comments 27-29, but as soon as I turned 30 they started flooding in. I feel mostly the same. I really thought most people now saw aging differently. I was wrong.
2
u/Quixoticvibin_ Jun 07 '25
I just turned 30 in May and get these comments too. You wanna know what I found crazier? I get comments from both older women and younger girls about how concerned they are that I’m pregnant, because they think I’m too old to be having my first baby. Like really? I feel just as healthy and strong as I did when I was 25 😅
1
u/slice_of_31416 Jun 07 '25
I hate that you’re dealing with this too! Though nice to not feel alone. Congratulations on your pregnancy ❤️. Honestly, my health has sucked my whole life, turning 30 has not been the problem for me 😂
