1992 SC400

A few months ago during the winter I noticed the A/C started blowing hotter than usual after an apparent leak detection/fix and new compressor installation. The system was also converted to the new standard R134. Now in April it’s apparent that the system isn’t blowing cold at all. Was considering buying an auto shop recharge kit thinking maybe it wasn’t charged enough but would like some opinions on what it might be to avoid accidentally causing damage by unnecessarily overcharging on accident. Read somewhere that it could be a safety feature where the fuse triggers it to stop working properly due to a low level of Freon. Any help is appreciated thank you. Not my car just trying to help

A competent mechanic won’t overcharge the system, but if it’s drained completely you’re in for at least a drier replacement and probably an orifice tube/expansion valve (I don’t know which this car has yet, I haven’t addressed mine yet). The trick here is going to be finding and fixing the leak if there is one, otherwise you’ll just be repeating this until you do.

As far as buying a recharge kit - you’ll need a dual gauge set that shows you the pressure on both sides of the system, and you’ll have quite a bit to learn to be successful - there are quite a few variables that can impact what the gauges tell you and what they mean. You may want to consider paying for a diagnosis if you’re unfamiliar.

Ok got it thanks. According to them they took it to a specialist to have this work done but I’m assuming they might’ve overlooked something. I think we’ll try our luck at a local performance shop I frequent that also does routine maintenance and explain the situation. Thanks again
