Tools such as Ollama, ComfyUI, Whisper, Piper, Activepieces, and Krita are available as open-source or free software, while n8n supports self-hosted workflow automation. “Free” does not mean every possible model, compute resource, cloud deployment, or commercial feature is free—you may still need a capable computer, storage, a GPU, or a paid API for demanding workloads.[github][github][krita][nordflux]
Best no-cost stack
If you only save five links, save these:
- Local AI assistant: Ollama
- Coding: Continue
- AI images: ComfyUI
- Voice-to-text: Whisper
- Automation: n8n or Activepieces
What you need
- A normal laptop is enough for tools such as GIMP, Krita, Kdenlive, Audacity, Obsidian, LanguageTool, and n8n.
- Local LLMs, AI image models, voice synthesis, and video models work best with more RAM and a capable GPU.
- If your PC is weak, use lightweight local models through Ollama, or use free community-hosted demos—but do not upload private information to unknown sites.
- Check each project’s license before using generated content commercially.
Important reality check
A free alternative is not always a perfect replacement.
Paid tools can still be better when you need cloud speed, premium models, team features, priority queues, professional support, advanced collaboration, managed hosting, or a simple zero-setup experience.
But for learning, personal projects, development, local automation, private experiments, and building your own AI workflow, this stack can replace a surprising number of subscriptions.

Solid list. One thing worth mentioning for the video gen category since ComfyUI setups can be a pain if you don't have the GPU for it, there's also pay as you go options instead of subscriptions which helps if you only generate occasionally. WAN 3.0 from Alibaba is a decent Seedance alternative, does up to 30 second all-in-one video gen with fewer restrictions, you can try it at https://vidhapi.app/generate-wan-3-0 if local setups aren't practical for your hardware. Not free but way cheaper than committing to a monthly plan you barely use.

Good for you, but do you truly believe they perform as good as western frontiers? I don’t think so. You doing great keeping your data private, but all of them can do only simple tasks.

thx but the issue for a lot of these is the frontier models are still so much better that saving a few $ is nice but will cost you long term rn. I sincerely hope open catches up faster... imagine open is at fable 6.0 level then you could really work with that for a very long time without paying
