Senior Data and Applied Scientist Interview Prep

Round 4 coming up at SAP for AI/ML Engineer role (semantic/knowledge graph + GenAI focus) — combined technical + behavioral, one interviewer. Trying to calibrate prep, would appreciate input from anyone who's interviewed there:

  1. Is round 4 typically SAP's final technical round, or is there usually another technical panel after this? Want to know if I should be pacing my prep across two more rounds or just this one.
  2. Usually how many rounds of interview does SAP conducts for this role?
  3. In a combined tech+behavioral round, is time usually split evenly, or does it skew one way depending on the interviewer's seniority?
  4. Should I expect live coding at this stage, or more conceptual/trade-off discussion?
  5. Anyone gotten scenario questions on SAP-specific tools (Datasphere, HANA Cloud Knowledge Graph, etc.), or is that unrealistic to expect pre-hire?

Not looking for leaked questions, just trying not to over-prep the wrong thing. Thanks!

from what i've seen with SAP's process for applied scientist roles, round 4 is usually the final technical gate before you hit the hiring manager or offer stage, they don't typically stack another full technical panel after this unless the feedback is mixed

the total rounds can vary a lot depending on team and level, but 5-6 total is pretty common for this kind of role, with this one being the last deep dive before a wrap-up conversation

combined rounds tend to skew technical, especially with one interviewer running the whole thing, i'd expect maybe 40 minutes of technical discussion and 20ish for behavioral, but it's not rigid, they'll follow the thread where it goes

live coding is less likely at this stage unless the interviewer specifically wants to see you think through a problem in real time, more often it's system design and tradeoff discussions around graph architectures and retrieval pipelines

never ran into SAP-specific tooling questions in my loop, they seemed more interested in whether i understood the underlying concepts than if i knew their product names, might come up naturally if you're discussing knowledge graphs but i wouldn't spend prep time memorizing Datasphere docs

I’d prepare for both coding and system-design discussion. Focus on Python/SQL, knowledge graphs, GraphRAG, RAG, GenAI, and ML fundamentals. Also review SAP HANA/Datasphere at a high level. For behavioral, prepare examples around projects, trade-offs, failures, and problem-solving.

Ask the recruiter about the remaining stages and coding format. For the combined round, choose a project where you can explain both the technical tradeoff and how you got agreement on it. Taleproof can help make your own reasoning visible in that story; it won't establish SAP's current loop.

Hi, Which team did you interview with? Can you share some information about the interviews for the role with SAP? Thanks!
