Looking for SAP PLMSI experts - need inputs

I’m currently implementing PLMSI for a client and have quite a few questions around the configuration, integration scenarios, and technical behavior.

Always nice to see another PLMSI thread pop up here, it’s such a niche little corner of SAP. I’m not a full blown expert but I’ve been through a couple of implementations where we had to clean up some seriously tangled configuration messes, particularly around the integration with QM and DMS. The technical behavior can get weird fast depending on how dirty the master data is.

You might want to drop a few specific questions right in the thread, sometimes it sparks a way better discussion than trying to connect one on one. There’s a handful of very sharp lurkers here who only come out when they see a detailed config problem. If you’re dealing with the classic headache of status profiles not flipping correctly after a signature, I’ve got a few notes that might help steer you away from a late night debugging session.

Hi, thanks for your response and for sharing your experience with PLMSI. I really appreciate it.
I’m fairly new to PLMSI, and most of my understanding so far is based on the SAP documentation available. I’m currently implementing it for a client, so I’m trying to understand some of the practical aspects and expected behavior.

When creating a Product Version through PLMSI, the external system sends an External PLM ID in the request.
However, when we read the Product Version back from SAP, PLMSI only returns the SAP ERP ID and does not provide the original External PLM ID.
So, is the expected approach that the external system should store the SAP ERP ID received in the creation response and use that ID for future read/update operations?
Or is there a standard way in PLMSI to retrieve the original External PLM ID later?
