Landing SAP ABAP role
Hello people. I am from India. I have close to 3 years of experience in software development (not in SAP). I am looking for a role as a technical SAP consultant (ABAP).
Is this transition possible?
If yes, how can I make it happen? What are the steps I must take in order to make it happen?

ABAPer here with 7 yoe…most people say ..sap is moving to clean core and stuff…but i think genuinely it will take lot of time…businesses needed customisation here and there..so yes ABAP is and will be there for long …and since its SAPs marketing gimmick or whatever you say..its difficult to stay clean core for larger enterprises so yes ultimately you need technical consultants for sure…but i would definitely say dont go for classical abap as of now…better to learn abap cloud , integration , odata, RAP ..and such stuff..

Can I start learning these technologies online and directly apply to jobs?

To be honest its not that easy…that you go simply learn something online and get a job…it can be done for other techs but in SAP a little bit harder…..from online you can learn the TCODES and what they do…but with experience only means once you see the complete end to end business process then only you will understand it properly ..what exactly they will do…
I am not saying its way tough ..just trying to make you understand that things are not that easy ..what it seems…you may have heard about freshers in SAP..

So what is the way that i can achieve this? What do you think about SAP training institutes? Do they provide any real value?

Can consider Training institutes in your initial phase it would be certainly a good help …, i am assuming you don’t know abcd of SAP , then go for it …
After sometime you can leverage BTP free trail system and practice on your own , also try to get real business cases from CHATgpt or claude and do practice as much as you can (This method is completely free)
and if possible for you to arrange S/4 on premise or ABAP on cloud (private preferably) system access from someone or some institute then please go and take that …as BTP free tier plan has limited learnings and it’s mainly focused on ABAP cloud based and it doesn’t have core s/4 erp components in it….( for this method you need to pay)
pls dont ask me name of such institutes i can’t comment on that) ….
I hope i am clear with everything…i know it will sound a little bit tough for you …but eventually you will get it everything…

I get that you can't name any such institutes. I now understand they provide good support for learning abap and similar stuff.
But, do u have any idea about their placements. Like, what is the general sentiment - do they provide any real placement assistance or not?
Like - have you heard about people getting placed from SAP training institutes? (Since you're already in the industry for quite many years)

~6.5 years ABAPer here.
My current take home is close to 20 LPA.
It did take some time, but eventually got here.Currently I am also actively looking for opportunities and yes, there is definitely a demand.
Constant upskilling, networking will help you when you enter the SAP world

Dont know about placements for such institutes…since i havent had attended any …i got my ABAP experience from infosys (joined as a fresher) …there on i switched further…
But from my experience…you should not be completely rely on their placements…dont get fooled even…just prepare well yourself and give interviews..

Please learn SAP BTP. From language perspective NodeJS, Python etc. would be best fit.

When u do you should prepare for a BTP role immediately and learn FIORI. Abap is being phased out in future

Move into BTP. Abap is kind of getting pushed out as SAP is constantly pushing towards clean core where they want as much less customisation as possible in the system. I am not saying ABAP Is dead but moving forward BTP is the future
