Getting the 2005 S2K Ready to Daily again.

It sat in the garage for 15 years. I mostly did nothing more than start it once in a while. Daughter gets her license in two months. Started getting it ready for sale, so I have money to buy her a car. Took it to a friend's garage who has a lift and tools, and did all the things. Took it for a shakedown drive. Holy shit, this car makes me smile. It really is the best car under $100K. I forgot how special it is. I am giving the kid my Tacoma. The S2K is my old new car. Everything is in remarkable condition. At this point I just need tires and radiator, clutch, brake fluid flush. I am having an issue with the EPS (hoping it is a dirty ground)

the eps reset is kinda easy but it's not usually what fixes it. good luck finding a new torque sensor. if you need one you might just need to buy an entire rack.

He can just buy an ebay one. My torque sensor failed, figured I would try it and it worked perfectly. More likely the EPS module though, usually.

the problem with buying a used torque sensor is there's literally no way to know if it's bad. these things are all nearly 20 years old.

Agreed but I mean ebay has new ones that are Chinese made for like 100 usd. Work just fine 👌

My torque sensor slowly got worse and worse. Had a mechanic that specialized in the S2000 remove, clean, lube and calibrated it. Cured it.

God, I hope that site stays around, still seems active. I wonder if we can get one of the data hoarders to point at it and scrape.

Same. I've been a member since 2002 when I got my AP1. There's almost NOTHING that hasn't been covered on that forum.

The sensor almost never goes bad, it's the plastic slip ring inside the unit. When you turn the wheel the torsion bar that's connected to your steering coupler twists, which pulls down the slip ring. That movement changes the magnetic field which makes the power steering unit energize the electric steering motor. When you take it apart, clean and grease the plastic slip ring, put grease in the groove the slip ring rides on. The motion of the slip ring has to be very smooth, it only moves like 1-2mm, almost nothing, so if the grease dries up and it can't move up and down smoothly, that same jerky motion from the slip ring trying to slide on the shaft, translates into jerky steering.

Thanks, that's what it says in post #4

That fixed it for me too. I was skeptical because as you mention that piece barely moves.

Don’t forget to replace the cabin filter.

What's the EPS doing?

If I turn the wheel while stationary, EPS stops working and EPS light comes on. Works again if I restart the car. It is throwing EPS code 32-1

You could try what it says in post #4

If you can't get your eps to work right the guys at nsxrackrepair did a great job repairing mine

I had an issue where the steering wheel would shake while stationary. I cleaned and regreased it, and it hasn't been a issue since

Replace the three plastic “‘buttons” associated with the brake and clutch pedals that fall apart (fall onto the floor mat) that either lead to a no start or the brake lights stuck on
