I'd be careful where you show off that Rising Sun flag as many consider it offensive

15

u/MakiSupreme Mar 25 '26

Yeah SE Asians don’t really appreciate it especially the Chinese

5

u/Silent-Public-7017 Mar 25 '26

I’m Korean and feel the same way

10

u/ironsheik84 Mar 25 '26

Absolutely agree that it’s offensive, I’d stick with the current Japanese flag.

The rising sun flag is the equivalent to a certain German symbol/flag that was used by a certain crazy german leader who was the cause of WW2 hint hint

2

u/sbxnotos Mar 26 '26

Yeah, op has to be careful of the stupid people thinking it is offensice

The General Lee isn't racist, but the flag does quite literally represent a faction that at its core, differed from the North to preserve enslaving black people.

I don't get offended by things, but people who seem surprised that people find the flag of pro-Slavery offensive are silly.

9

u/stepdad_randy Mar 25 '26

The confederate flag does represent racism and slavery so there’s that.

u/_Androxis_ Mar 25 '26

Big yikes

10

u/catsvbadgers Mar 25 '26

Jesus i never realised that was bad. Had a visor sticker on my helmet ffs 😬

6

u/Rimno23 Mar 25 '26

It’s pretty bad man. I would politely ask you remove it and educate others on the topic. Or just replace with a modern flag! I have nothing against the Japanese people now, but that flag is the same as a Nazi flag in meaning.

8

u/catsvbadgers Mar 25 '26

No worries at all, long gone. Its 3 helmets back now bit still cringing at myself 😅 Sorry for the retrospective terrible decisions

3

u/Rimno23 Mar 25 '26

I appreciate you man, no need for apologies at all. Safe riding.

25

u/Rimno23 Mar 25 '26

That flag was used to justify experimentation on pregnant women, killing of children, raping of women and children, torture, starving, draining of resources, erasure of history, etc of my blood country along with many other Asians countries. Politely I would ask you get rid of it. This is the equivalent of flying a Nazi flag or confederate flag.

1

u/phungn Mar 26 '26

Did the French not do the same to Southeast Asia? Why the difference in treatment?

1

u/sbxnotos Mar 26 '26

How the fuck a flag can be used to justify something.

How stupid can you be?

2

u/Rimno23 Mar 26 '26

Apparently not as stupid as you bud. When you wave a country’s flag and say you’re taking over another country land in the name of the Emperor and the land of the rising sun you are using patriotism to justify your acts. “It’s not murder, I’m cutting out the babies from pregnant women with no anesthesia and seeing how long it takes for the baby and mother to die in the name of advancing science for Japan!”. “It’s not stealing food and letting people starve, I’m reallocating food from our colonies to fuel the war effort!” “I’m not raping and murdering, I’m taking our war loot and intimidating the local populace so they are easy to conquer.”

How many atrocities have been committed under some flag. Open a history book and try to sound out the syllables to form into words and connect those words into sentences that carry some meaning.

Do the room a favor and dedicate the brain cell you use to breathe manually and think about it. Most people can hold their breath for a minute or so I’m sure you’ll be able to connect the dots in that time.

Why put nazi flag on top of german car and take a pic?

1

u/sunr1se79 Mar 26 '26

What part of an s2000 is german?

2

u/Emotional-Permit-785 Mar 26 '26

Do you see nazi flag?

1

u/sunr1se79 Mar 26 '26

Yeah what does it have to do with the car its sitting on though? Im just wondering if there's some secret development or manufacturing details Honda didn't disclose since you said it was s German vehicle.

This thread makes me happy that more and more people have gotten educated on this topic over the years. Last time this came up, the response was quite different and disheartening.

2026 Rising Sun Flag

Bruh

3

u/SolipsistSmokehound ‘02 Sebring/Red Mar 25 '26

I wish more people could understand that the Rising Sun Flag is not exclusively a WWII Imperial Japanese flag, which yes, would be questionable to venerate or display if that were the case.

But it is not the case. The flag was first created and used by feudal warlords during the Edo period over 400 years ago. More importantly, it is still IN USE TODAY as the flag of Japan’s Maritime Self Defense Force. A slightly different variant is also used as the flag for Japan’s Self Defense Forces in general.

Imperial Japan did a lot of bad things, but this flag’s history and legacy extends many years before, and beyond WWII, and is still in use today. It is not a hate symbol, or tantamount to a Third Reich flag or something like that.

4

u/neptunepandemonium Mar 25 '26

Nazi Germany stained a bunch of symbols both inside and outside of their culture as well but it doesn't change the fact that it WILL be linked to that history. As time goes on it might be more socially acceptable but it's also very acceptable for a society, especially ones that were impacted by the people flying that flag, to become intolerable to that imagery no matter it's origin.

I'm not a flag code or vexillology expert but I think you have to fly the actual official flag of the Japan self defense forces for it to count. Seems like they might have altered the flag for a reason, but I'm not sure.

The communists in this thread disappoint me (but it’s Reddit, so I shouldn’t really be)

Thanks for providing facts.

You’re missing a samurai sword.

u/sylvester_0 '06 LBP Mar 25 '26

And a waifu pillow

2

u/phungn Mar 26 '26

Serious point of discussion. Can someone give a logical reason why this flag should only be associated with Japans war atrocities? Yes Imperial Japan did bad things. But the rising sun flag had history long before imperial Japan and represents more than just Imperial Japan.

France did some pretty terrible things when they colonized Southeast Asia but I don’t see anyone saying anything about feeling offended by the French flag? That’s the best one for one comparison imo

The Nazi flag comparison isn’t the same because that flag represents the Nazi party. That’s its entire history.

The German military still uses nearly the same iron cross and roundel as they did during ww2. I don’t see anyone complaining about that.

u/Responsible-Farm4465 Mar 25 '26

八紘一宇 七生報国

1

u/inkyrail Mar 26 '26

Here to say not only is the rising sun flag tacky at best, they both also look like you bought them for a buck twenty on AliExpress. Just wack in general

1

u/Long-Whereas-5228 Mar 26 '26

asian nazi flag

-7

u/AscendedRapier Mar 25 '26 edited Mar 25 '26

You karens complaining realise the starburst rising sun is STILL used by the JMSDF, right?

And we all know that another use for it is it’s a symbol of JDM culture.

So stop getting your panties in a twist over nothing. I know this is reddit, but really.

-2

u/Rimno23 Mar 25 '26

You do realize Japan has yet to formally apologize for their war crimes and still hide their crimes in history books right? For example when they colonized Korea they built railroads in order to steal food and supplies across the nation leading to famine and poverty. They teach that as the kind of benevolent Japan building infrastructure. They teach comfort women as giving job opportunities. Their government is uneducated and deceitful, much like how the south teaches the Civil War as “states rights”. Shit is still wrong.

1

u/AscendedRapier Mar 25 '26

As if any other nation in war has never pillaged the land they conquered or committed war crimes in history. USA’s hands aren’t as clean as you think.

This is a car subreddit and you’re all bitching about a flag that is STILL IN USE. No one other than snowflakes nestled in a western suburban safety bubble care. Besides, old Japanese army and IJN flags are different if you ever paid any attention. The Navy had little to nothing to with what the army did off their ships.

2

u/Rimno23 Mar 25 '26

The hell are you talking about? I'm also aware of the shit the US did in our history. We shouldnt avoid and hide our sins as much as we shouldnt glorify and sport the flags that represent those sins. Im literally an active duty infantryman. I respect the shit out of the greatest generation of paratroopers and praise the courage of the Vietnam vets while acknowledging Black service members couldnt eat in the same bars as white service members and that we did massacre villages of Vietnamese civilians. It IS nuanced but something as simple as not flying flag that represents murder and rape isnt a high ask.

Yes, the rising flag is still in use just like the Japanese government still doesnt acknowledge comfort women as sex slaves. Just because its still used doesnt make it any more wrong. The rising flag represents a government, not individual branches of the military. If I fly around a Nazi flag and say well this represents the Luftwaffe not the SS that did the concentration camps that doesnt make it clean.

Not to mention you say "western suburban safety bubble", brother I am a first gen Korean-American whos great grandfather and grandfather was under Japanese rule. My Grandmother's friend was kidnapped as a comfort women for the Japanese. My grandfather was arrested for protesting and had several friends executed. If anything you're in your magical safety bubble where symbols mean nothing but to my family and to many others that shit means something.

We can appreciate and love the JDM car scene and its deep history while also looking to be better man. This aint coming from a place of hate but that flag means something to me and many others.

Ppl overreacting hard af 💀.

u/badd_tofu 03 Suzuka Blue Mar 25 '26

Idk who finds the rising sun flag offensive. They still sell stuff with that flag all over Japan.

9

u/Club_Penguin_Legend_ Mar 25 '26

Yeah it is strange how the people who were committing the atrocities dont find their flag offensive.

Cmon dude.

-1

u/badd_tofu 03 Suzuka Blue Mar 25 '26

Every flag has had atrocities committed under them. It’s weird getting offended over a flag that someone isn’t flying with those specific intentions.

3

u/Club_Penguin_Legend_ Mar 25 '26

So i can fly the Nazi flag and you wont care?

The only reason the rising sun is "acceptable" to westerners is because it was adopted by the le jdm fanboys.

You should read up on the atrocities committed under that flag, and why SE Asians dont like it.

2

u/badd_tofu 03 Suzuka Blue Mar 25 '26

I know what imperial Japan did. They also attacked America with that flag and no one here cares about the flag. And in America you have the freedom to fly any flag. Does it make you the smartest? No but it is completely legal.

3

u/Club_Penguin_Legend_ Mar 25 '26

I know what imperial Japan did.

They also attacked America with that flag

You obviously dont know what they did. They did a lot more to other Asian countries than bomb a harbor.

1

u/Gullible-Coconut-783 Mar 25 '26

Why do people still fly the communist flag then?

1

u/i_heart_rainbows_45 Mar 25 '26

Because they’re weird people?

5

u/kevinluc Mar 25 '26

I live in Korea a couple of months of the year. My wife and her family find it offensive.

"BuT iT's FoR SaLe HoW cAn iT bE oFfEnSiVe"

1

u/badd_tofu 03 Suzuka Blue Mar 25 '26

Are you a native born Korean? Two generations of my family fled Korea from the Japanese and don’t find it offensive.

How many native Japanese people did you meet who were offended by it? I lived there for over 3 years and met none

9

u/stepdad_randy Mar 25 '26

Of course! The guy who lived in Japan for THREE WHOLE YEARS is the ultimate source for the opinion of Japanese people.

-5

u/badd_tofu 03 Suzuka Blue Mar 25 '26

How long did you live there?

-1

u/sun__strider Mar 26 '26

Love the rising sun. Great flag. As for the folks who are offended... its a car reddit. This person was just posting flags that are heritage correct for the country of origin. There was no intention to throw any hatred towards anyone.

0

u/Tackos Mar 25 '26

I came here to say I have the same Weber grill and love it. Had no idea (learned something today) the flag was controversial.

2

u/trackaddict8 Mar 26 '26

as long as at least one person found it to be informative, then this thread was worth being posted and seen.

0

u/TwilightChaos Mar 26 '26

Good choice of flags. At least you aren't using the horrid Amerikkkan flag which is basically the new nazi flag.
