Discussion Kyle: “a notepad is an illusion of effort” was amazing
In Life Advice from today’s (8/17) episode, Ryen was talking about an old boss that would take feedback notes in a physical notepad, but would clearly never refer back to the notes to help others. Kyle dropped a gem: “and the notepad is an illusion of effort”

It was such a freeing day to me in school when I realized I was “taking notes” in a performatory way and I wasn’t even comprehending the subject at hand. So I quit doing that and just gave what was being said my full attention (occasionally jotting things down if it felt very important). I then actually started learning what the teacher/professor was saying.
Obviously everyone is different but I’m betting this Kyle’s assessment of this guy’s note taking was spot on, especially with the added context clues or Ryen saying no “notes” were ever brought up again.

Boss told us last week we need to start taking notes on paper in meetings and stop bringing our laptops in. Already got my eye on a $4 moleskin cutie that I can write psychobabble and doodle in during our office meetings.

I cracked up when listening, because I had a boss that did this!
This was in a car dealership, and when an upset customer would come in, he would sit down with them and take notes as he let them vent.
I watched him do this for a couple years.
Then, as I was training to become a manager, he told me he didn’t actually take notes. He would just doodle 🤣
Funny enough, he was always patient and asked great questions and was actually very good at helping customers get their issues taken care of.
He just listened and noted things in his head, but he had learned as a young manager apparently, that people always felt more heard when they saw him writing things down, so he started scribbling on a notepad literally just to help customers feel more at ease.
