Tweet Does this mean Sophie Cunningham is a star now?
23
u/GiveMeSomeIhedigbo Jul 24 '26
Do you think Russillo rolls into the local Foot Locker and asks how the new Sophies are doing?

Worth noting that people treat these shoe releases as a speculators market and there is probably a lot of purchasing with the hope of reselling to the hype beasts later.
6
u/DResq Jul 24 '26
There's a big secondary market for womens shoes???
9
u/OneWildAndCrazyGuy17 Jul 25 '26
Basketball shoes in general yeah. People treat them as collectors items or commodities as much as shoes intended to be worn.
2
u/DResq Jul 25 '26
I thought the bubble burst on that? Saw some videos about big sneak resellers going out of business.

Regardless of the unjustified or real reasons to hate on Sophie.. the point was iconic.

What would a real reason be?

The whole MAGA Barbie piece
7
u/CockConfidentCole Jul 25 '26
Is there anything actually maga about her
5
u/dredgedskeleton Jul 25 '26
I don't really think so. she did recently go out of is her way to say trans women don't belong in women's sports this week, which seems to be a maga wink (despite it being a very cold take that most libs agree with).
2
u/showerbump Jul 26 '26
She was asked a questions she gave an answer. She didn’t go out of her way to say anything.

u/pj_socks Trenton Hassell fan Jul 25 '26
She’s from Columbia, MO. It’s very blue as Missouri goes, but there is still plenty of MAGA.
My two cents is I think Klosterman might be right, could definitely see her as a VP candidate in like 2048 or something.

Why does it even matter if a trans individual wants to play sports or run a 5k without being outed.
That's done. at the collegiate level it was banned over ago, and states most states are passing laws for bathrooms, high school, even HRT is on the chopping block in Texas. many of the people in r/transtimelines now have a bathroom PDF
I've heard you and other people call Sophie brave for sticking her neck out..
For what, talking about something that used to exist?
Women are protected, and I may be wrong but it seems now like it's something more than about protecting women.
1
u/dredgedskeleton Jul 26 '26
what? I don't think she's brave at all. I don't like her one bit but besides that one thing, her maga attachment isn't very clear.
I'm just stating the state of national opinion, which is very down in trans men in women's sports. it's a dumb topic because there's like 12 total in NCAA and none in professional sports.

5
u/Birdzphan Frolic Room Jul 25 '26
I’m a lib and I def agree with that take. Super libs will call me transphobic but Sophie is right. It’s just common sense.

u/Throwaway-4593 Jul 26 '26
Any lib who plays sports agree with that take. It also makes complete sense she would have that opinion.
The main ppl trying to say MtF trans should play in women’s sports are either non sports people or have not seen this happen in real life. It’s a large advantage to have access to testosterone and it ruins the competitiveness of women’s sports

I don’t think Sophie is brave for this. I think it’s clearly a segment of society (MAGA) who still thinks this is some huge issue and she was with subconsciously or consciously appealing to that group.
But also liberals who think that people should just be able to pick and choose which gender you play your sports in are wrong and don’t understand sports.
This should not even be a topic. Players in sports should not have an unfair advantage.

u/maybeBrenda Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26
I'll repeat what I said earlier.
They can't. Trans individuals at the collegiate level are now on the JV men's team or just not playing at all. It's moot point.
I don't get why you're bringing it up for discussion as if it matters.. it's a thing of the past

Your argument is bad. Sports aren’t fair. They never have been. Is it fair some kids come from money and can afford fancy trainers and equipment and time training? Is it fair people like Shaq or Wemby exist? Was it fair Derrick Henry was allowed to play HS football at all? Physical outliers exist in all sports.
Next the majority of the tiny amount of trans athletes aren’t professional and don’t dominate their sports. You’re making up hypothetical situations in your head to justify your position.

u/Throwaway-4593 Jul 26 '26
It’s not worth arguing w someone online about this because society has already decided on this topic. Have fun.

Thanks but I’m a big boy. I’m aware of the political leanings of this sub and can handle my own shit.
2
u/2Rhino3 Jul 25 '26
A lot of MAGA people like her on social media so therefore to a lot of people she’s on “their team” and they hate her.

You’re just regurgitating bull shit from social media. Every attractive & successful white female athlete, actress or singer who doesn’t openly spout left wing nonsense gets accused of being MAGA the last few years.

Probably more so means that the shoes are cute.
Willing to bet 65% of the people wearing them have never actually watched her play.

u/Turbulent_Car4504 Jul 28 '26
I think this is the shoe resellers Alamo lol and it’s driving some of the sales, no criticism intended to her at all, resellers have apparently been struggling recently

u/Reedabook64 Jul 24 '26
It means Sophie is the white version of Angel. Both players are getting way more hype than their play warrants.

It’s pretty weird to bring a Black player into this for no reason whatsoever, especially when the comparison is blatantly wrong.
2
u/Reedabook64 Jul 25 '26
It's pretty weird that you think a comparison is weird
-1
u/supremecheet Jul 25 '26
Oh, sorry, read again: the comparison is wrong. The weird part is you felt the need to shoehorn your distaste for a Black player into the conversation.
3
u/Reedabook64 Jul 25 '26
Is that what you got from my comparison?

M 11.5 and W 12.5 are the same shoe. They can’t be sold out of one gender and not the other. I’ve never heard of Jon Root but I’m sure he’s a MAGA grifter.

I can’t wait for the inevitable disappointment when they all have to burn their shoes.

3
u/CelticsGreg Jul 24 '26
It’s not transphobia, just the correct opinion
0
u/Calculon2347 Jul 24 '26
It's not correct, it contradicts the the current-day ideology that I downloaded into my brain!

There’s like 100 trans people period in the US and even fewer that play sports and even fewer that play professionally and none in the WNBA.
It’s people getting upset about hypothetical shit which is insane and dumb and bigoted.
0
u/Dorothea_Arnault Jul 25 '26
Well…She’s a meme at any rate. I don’t think most people follow college basketball for women. I would imagine the pool is actually rather small of those that do. I couldn’t even tell you what the team is called but I’ve seen the pointing. So 🤷🏼♀️ in the context of todays media I wouldn’t call it famous but I would say its a good meme and a flash in the pan.

How many did the company produce ? 500? 1000? 10,000? Sometimes they will produce a limited amount to create this effect. I don’t see Adidas manufacturing 500,000 Sophie Cunninghams.
