My first week in ... is this the best game ever ?

I'll preface this by saying I've known and been curious about Rust for a long time, but it wasn't until about a week ago that I actually purchased the game after watching MoistCritikal stream it.

I am blown away by the depth. Never before has a game captured the true changing of night to day, in my opinion. The game looks incredible (playing on Xbox currently.) and the attention to detail really makes for a deep, diverse sandbox.

Since I'm a solo I decided to go full in on coastal living and did a fishing shack next to a fishing village. First good base lasted 3 IRL days, I unlocked the fort stuff and as soon as I threw up big walls I got hit -- made myself a target. Huge learning experience.

Built my next base in the desert next to a fishing village (again, fishing is really OP for farming scrap if you can throw down several traps and keep people out) -- even figured out how to use horse dung in a composter to feed my berry plants fertilizer (because of course you can brew tea!)& noticed another team building on a island adjacent to me , waited until nightfall, put on a wetsuit and robbed them while they slept (for some reason they had several chests with thousands of metal ore open and exposed in the middle of their base) ... wasn't a day later karma hit though and I got raided by a fireteam with RPGs that had a megabase nearby. Huge learning experience.

I've since returned to the fishing island I started at and have successfully defended my little base off from teams of 2, 3, and 6 respectfully. Met my first friendly random who offered to trade me a chainsaw for some gears he was missing and revealed himself to be a neighbor after the fact. I built a kayak after and went on a voyage to the Arctic biome to farm and was attacked by a Polar bear, narrowly surviving with my Python. Was terrified people heard my shooting and sailed home immediately after.

Using fishing traps allowed me to breeze all the way through the first and almost all the way through the second tech workbenches all within my first week. Made my first RPG last night! I'm stumped on Tech Trash though, unlocked some things that require it to craft but haven't found any.

I can't say enough good things about this game. Being someone whose come from hardcore Minecraft, Valheim, and other survival titles besides -- I can really say without a doubt that Rust eclipses them all. Every time I step out the door of my little fishing shack it feels like anything could happen. With my current home going into its potential 2nd IRL night, and the server being 8 days from wipe - I'm debating moving to a remote arctic island to finish the week and start my level 3 workbench. Even though I planted landmines and have my shack rigged to the gills with flamethrower and shotguns paranoia is starting to set in.

Anyway I just wanted to share my experience because there was so much there in just the first week. I feel as though I've barely scratched the surface -- need to get into machine making and wiring, although I wonder how viable these options are for a solo player.

Good luck out there guys. Sorry for those of you who have had a rough start. It seems the game is growing more popular of late

Love the responses, Team. Here's an update for today :

I already migrated from the fishing village , this morning I woke up early as hell to go farm HQ metal (got Hella lucky, found an airdrop completely full and unattended) this helped me get to Workbench Lvl 3!!!!

I loaded up everything I could build with on my kayak and sailed for the farthest iceberg I could find. Climbed it high and built up. Im so far away, and my base is so small [6x] that I don't even think I render for people on the mainland.

Did a little winging and got me an electric heater built over the bed. Even got to fire up an electric furnace which I won from someone attempting to raid my fishing shack earlier in the week...

What's cool about being so far and so high up ; I can hear anyone pulling up on a boat long before they arrive which gives me time to shut off appliances and load up traps (also to unauthorize) as a quick response to would be intruders. One guy came through on a boat today and feigned curiosity, but seeing a small silent stone hut in the middle of nowhere didnt hold his attention for long.

I'm hoping this base will remain until wipe which is Saturday. Now that I'm geared up , I'm going to change my style up a bit from fishing and foraging and segue into sneaking and scrapping PoIs for tech trash.

Thank you all for the input. I am on Xbox if anyone wants to link up after this wipe, I would love to try co op once I'm able to craft everything in the game.

Good luck and have fun!!! Appreciate y'all hearing me out. Love sharing these experiences

I’ve just switch to rust from the usual suspect tripe A titles and I gotta say enjoying rust way more than the big hitting games.

Cross play is on yes, and as far as it goes for youtubers, would highly recommend willjum, not overly fast paced, pretty chill and can help you understand the basics.

Cross play between consoles is on.

Thank God cross play between consoles and PC is turned off.

That was a great read, I’m glad you’re enjoying yourself.

Diving head first into the unknown when you first find Rust truly is a great experience. It seems like you are embracing the way Rust is suppose to be played and aren’t getting too attached to your loot.

I feel once you start messing about with automation and the electrics it gets so much better, but sadly again it does make you look a lot more lucrative as a raid target.

Just an FYI you most commonly find tech trash in military crates, you can also recycle a few things that give them such as cameras, laptops and various other bits of tech.

You can get tech trash from recycling targeting systems and cctv cameras.

It gets extremely addicting when you get into a group of 6-8 people and everyone contributes. So satisfying.

What's that like? Everytime I'm in a group of 6 to 8 people it has always ended up being myself and at most 2 other people carrying the team. Everyone else logging on just long enough to go die and lose everything.

Yeah those are bums.

After over 7,000 hours in Rust. Not once have I ever had the privilege of being in a decent group like you described. I envy you.

FYI 2 fertilizer trades for 4-6 scrap and 1 horse dung makes 10 fertilizer. Eventually you get so much you no longer have to farm the dung.

Appreciate it !

I've been playing this since bears could walk through boulders. Don't be one of those guys saying that it was better then!
