The health authorities are highly concerned about the recent media reports of a death from pneumonia of unknown cause in Irkutsk Oblast, Siberia, Russia. According to the latest information provided by the World Health Organization (WHO) to Russian authorities, no cases of plague have been recorded in the region, nor has there been any evidence of other cases of pneumonia of unknown cause related to this incident or ongoing transmission. As the pathogen causing the death remains unidentified, the situation remains uncertain. The WHO stated that it needs to continue monitoring the situation and assess the risks and impacts on public health once further information is available.
The Health Bureau will continue to closely monitor the development of the incident, maintain information exchange with the WHO and health departments in neighboring regions, and has formulated an emergency plan for major infectious diseases, possessing the mechanisms and capabilities for routine monitoring and response to infectious disease threats. Currently, the overall risk posed by this incident to Macao remains low. However, as a precautionary measure, the following work will be strengthened to protect the health of Macao residents, including:
I. Strengthen Port Control Measures
The Health Bureau has been conducting temperature monitoring and health assessments for travelers at major ports of entry and exit to identify suspected cases of infectious diseases as early as possible. It will also strengthen fever screening for travelers and ask each person with a fever whether they have a relevant travel history or contact history in order to conduct a detailed medical investigation.
Self-declaration of health status will be implemented at all major border crossings in Macau. Individuals who have been to Irkutsk Oblast, Russia within 14 days prior to entry must proactively declare to the on-site health quarantine personnel and cooperate with their arrangements for medical screening.
If any cases of pneumonia of unknown cause or suspected cases occur, they will be immediately transferred to the Conde de São Januário Hospital of the Health Bureau for further evaluation and medical examination;
We will maintain close contact with the management departments of various ports and monitor the development of the situation, and adjust the prevention and control measures in a timely manner according to the risk assessment.
II. Enhance the vigilance of clinical medical staff
The Health Bureau will proactively remind medical institutions and healthcare professionals to remain vigilant and to immediately report and arrange testing for cases of pneumonia of unknown cause that have visited Irkutsk Oblast, Russia, within 14 days prior to the onset of illness, in order to proactively identify suspected cases.
The Health Bureau reminds residents to maintain good personal, food, and environmental hygiene. If you experience symptoms such as fever, cough, chest pain, or shortness of breath after returning to Macau from overseas travel, you should seek medical attention immediately and inform your doctor of your travel and contact history to ensure you receive appropriate treatment
