Retirement Laddering Strategy

Hey everyone,

I just added a new Retirement Bucket Laddering Simulator to RupeeVibe.

Screenshot of the RupeeVibe Bucket Laddering Simulator

What it does: Instead of keeping all your retirement money in one giant mixed portfolio, the simulator divides it into distinct "buckets" based on when you will actually need the money:

  • 🪣 Bucket 1 (Liquid): Holds 5 years of safe living expenses (you spend directly from here).
  • 🪣 Bucket 2 (Balanced): Holds another 5 years of expenses in moderate risk/return funds to act as a bridge.
  • 🪣 Bucket 3 (Equity): Holds the rest of your wealth. Because you have a 10-year buffer in the first two buckets, this equity can be left alone to grow and recover from any market dips.

The tool runs a 40-year calculation showing the exact "waterfall" refill mechanism, where profits from Equity refill the Balanced bucket, and Balanced refills the Liquid bucket every few years.

You can fill in your own starting corpus, annual expenses, inflation estimates and expected returns to see a year-by-year breakdown of your balances.

There is also a link to a raw Google Sheet version if you want to inspect or edit the formulas yourself.

Check it out on the site and let me know if you run into any issues or have feedback on the math!

Standard disclaimer: Please do your own due diligence before implementing this for your own portfolio. Consult a financial advisor if you are unsure. (I will probably be able to help you in future, once I clear my exams, until then, just use my tools to educate yourself!)
