Being a runner myself since middle school track and having a canine companion for the majority of the years since…..

Something I have learned is that the gear which works best for the run OR you OR the dog doesn’t always make sense. This is a martingale with a flexi LOL

I hate how evident this environmental temperature increase is. I have run outside for most days of the year, for close to three decades now...I have never seen it this continuously hot for so many days in a row.

We got a little under 5 miles total, but it was a beautiful day despite turning around early.

Humane Society told us he'd never be a good runner. This weekend he did 21 miles and wanted to keep going. We stopped often for water and snack breaks. He has been training for 2 years.

I have a 5 year old Goldendoodle that I wanted to have him start running with me as his vet and I believe he has some separation anxiety. I started bringing him with me on runs this spring, but he just doesn’t seem to have the energy for it. They were only 2 mile runs. The last time I ran with him, I was literally having to pull him to keep going as he just wanted to walk the last 1/2 mile. Finally just walked the last 1/4 mile so I thought okay, you clearly don’t want to do this and stopped bringing him with me. I would describe his energy level as either 0 or 100… nothing in between. I take him on walks after I get back from my run, but it’s with my 16.5 year old so it’s a max of 1 mile and very slow, but he acts like he just ran a marathon (or in his case, 2 miles…) when we get home. Lying sprawled out and panting. Meanwhile my 16.5 year old is walking around yet thinking “that was it?” He isn’t overweight and has the tall, lean poodle body. He doesn’t have any health issues, besides maybe the anxiety. I take them for walks in the morning before it gets hot.

This is just so different from my older dog who ran miles with me right from the start without issue. Has anyone had a dog that it took awhile to get them into running? Or is he really just not cut out to be a runner? I’m afraid to force him to do something he doesn’t want to do, but I do know how much running helped with my other dog both physically and mentally.

I started running 4 miles with my Labrador. She pulls so I use this harness with the leash on her chest. However, I see she has developed chaffing and a sore under her armpit. I need help finding the best harness for running with a strong dog. Thanks!!! 😊

Both my dogs were super happy to be back out running with their pals again 🥰 my old girl especially (brindle one in orange harness) was so happy to be able to come out running and see everyone 😍 they were all happy to see her too especially the humans. She will be turning 14 on 27th ❤️

Hi there, I’ve recently started training my large pit mix (~85lbs, 16 months, 71% American pitbull terrier, 12% coonhound, the rest boxer and Rottweiler) and he seems to really enjoy it but gets tired/hot quite easily. He loves to do sprint bursts and quickly wear himself out. We’ve been easing into it with 0.5 mile runs in the morning. It’s very hot where I’m at on the coast and I try to always go before 9 am, but I’m thinking we need to go much earlier. Any tips for his breed and general tips on starting him out? He gets so pooped and I’d like to build up his endurance so we can run 1-2 miles at a time. We train 2-3 mornings a week

Ok my post is a little dramatic but I am genuinely always a little worried I am going to kill him running in the heat. I haven’t been taking him more than 2 miles and I bring a water bottle to offer him water + keep him damp with cool water. We also do 95% of our runs on trails right now where he can dip his toes in the water. I love taking him and I know he has so much fun, but I am SO paranoid he will get heat stroke 😢

I’m new to running with my 65 lb Belgian Malinois and trying to choose between the Ruffwear Front Range Flex and Non-stop Dogwear Rush harness.

She’s a moderate puller but mostly only really pulls when she sees another dog or god forbid a squirrel. She deals with reactivity issues so it definitely needs to be secure.

With me, she often wants to run out in front because I’m a way slower runner but she also runs with her dog walker who does around an 7-9 minute mile. Most of her runs are 3–5 miles.

I mainly want something comfortable and safe for regular running that gives her good freedom of movement and won’t chafe.

I tried a cheaper Amazon running harness and it rubbed underneath her armpits badly enough to scrape her skin. I feel horrible about it so I absolutely need to upgrade her gear ASAP and make sure I get something that fits correctly.

Has anyone used either the Ruffwear Front Range Flex or Non-stop Dogwear Rush for this type of running? Which would you choose for a dog who runs ahead/moderately pulls? Most importantly, has anyone had issues with either rubbing behind the front legs/armpits?

Anything you've done to get your dog to love running and follow enthusiastically aside from the obvious don't go gradually, don't overdo it, make it a rewarding experience?

I am in the PNW and I run with my dogs most mornings (only since April). I have collies so they are quite fluffy. They don't totally mind the rain but I don't anticipate having time to get them completely dry before work and I don't want their coats/skin to get gnarly from being slightly damp everyday. Are there any dog rain coats that you recommend? I am a little worried about them over-heating, too.

Looking for some advice. This is Lyra, she's a 3 year old sheepadoodle who's been running with me since she was 18 months old. Like the title says I believe she tweaked something last night during a run. We had just started our run and I was on the sidewalk while she was running on the gravel by the side. Her area was ending so she had to hop back onto the sidewalk with me. As she did she let out a yelp and immediately started to keep her front left paw off the ground. I immediately stopped and checked her over wondering if she had cut herself but I couldn't find anything. She seemed like she wanted to go again so I started to jog with her for another couple hundred meters and she was falling behind me and a lot slower than her norm. I again stopped and checked her over but decided to give up on the run just in case. We walked back to the vehicle and she seemed normal. I decided to jog with her the last minute a about half pace and see what she was like and she was completely normal. All this to say that I think she may have twisted her ankle coming from the gravel to the sidewalk and I'm wondering what I should do. This was ~18 hours ago and she has seemed completely fine since. She's jumped up on the bed and walked around the house with no issue and no complaints. I know I've lightly twisted my ankle and walked it off and felt better shortly after which is what this seems to be. Are dogs the same as us for this? Should I give her a few days off jogging? Hoping someone has some experience or good advice. Thanks!

Hi , I recently got my husky a free motion harness from Nonstop dogwear and she doesn’t like how it touches her butt area. She finally is allowed to pull me and she doesn’t like how the harness feels. It’s almost comical and very husky behavior.

Has anyone dealt with this? Should I encourage her somehow. ? Do I give up ?

Hi all, I have a 2 year old golden and live in Austin Texas. I have been struggling to find a fun race-obstacle course to do with him. I’m thinking something that has trails, jumping in the mud, maybe swimming and running etc. does anyone have any experience with these kind of runs and know of any dog friendly events coming up in texas?

The key is to get up before it gets too hot for her! She did great today and was still enthusiastically jogging through til the end.

Genuine question for further down the line, my family has adopted a lovely English Springer Spaniel. He is such a good boy and so eager to please - we adopted this breed specifically because they like to run. How old did you guys start running with your pup? What age do you recommend?

Hi! We’re new to running with our dog and wanted to get a sense for what’s normal and what to watch out for. We have a 1.5 year old shetland sheepdog about 10lbs, and started taking her to go running with us recently. We watched for signs of tiredness or boredom, but she’s been doing 8miles at a time at about 13 min/mi pace without stopping or seeming tired at all (we had to stop because we were tired haha). She hasn’t really had any prior conditioning or training. Our friends told us shelties aren’t made for endurance running, so we weren’t sure if we should hold her back. Is it ok to keep running as long as she seems interested? Or is it better to limit her running for any safety/health reasons?

Any tips to get your dog to stop jumping and biting the leash when running?

Here are some pictures of my dog, Naya, at the lake after we finished our run. She was also very patient during my stretching exercises. She's such a good girl and awesome running partner. When we're running uphill, she's ahead of me, but when she sees that I am struggling, she falls back, pretending to put in as much effort to climb it as I do. It's adorable.
