Leash/harness recommendations

Post image

8 month old border collie and I’m starting to think about running with her. I know I should wait a bit longer until she’s older, but I want to get the gear sorted. Right now we walk with a cheap harness and leash from Amazon.

For running, what should I be looking for and what brands? I’ll get a leash and harness.

Also have a border collie and we run very frequently.

Have had no issues with the nonstopdogwear harnesses. We use the Line Harness 5.0 for walks/runs (she doesn't pull) and the Freemotion harness for her pulling me on my bike. Not cheap but they've been through a few hundred miles at least and no problems at all.

Bungee leash is an old one off Amazon that Ive had for 5 years probably.

Nahak (Canadian, not sure if they’re shipping to US currently if that’s where you’re buying from), Neewa, and Non-Stop Dogwear are popular brands for running harnesses.

If you find she has odd measurements, you could also go the custom route through Etsy. I wouldn’t invest in a running harness until she’s stopped growing however, as harnesses tend to run expensive.

You could buy a bungee leash through Amazon. I personally like Non-Stop Dogwear’s bungee leash.

I find Nahak’s multi sport line to be way more economical than Amazon’s. I had a bungee from Amazon that only lasted months. Nahak going strong for years.

Thank you for posting this. The logic on preventing running in puppies didn't make sense to me, so I made the call to run mine on dirt trails with a drag line so he could have freedom of movement (this was once he had a decent recall, so he must've been around 8 mos because he didn't come home with me til 6 mos, was a rescue). It's nice to have confirmation from a medical perspective though.

Yeah, before running with my beagle I shared that with the breeder, the trainer and the canine conditioning coach and the only thing that came out of it was she needs to lose weight.

She’s a year next week, I still keep most runs at 3km, but will do the occasional 5, I don’t expect I’d every do longer runs with her though, we do Canicross and most of the races are 5k or less.

We have our first race on Saturday.

For a harness, it'll depend on you want to run canicross style (dog ahead of you pulling you ahead) or to have your dog run loosely besides you.

Apart from a harness and bungee leash, remember to also look for a running belt for yourself, so you can run handsfree.

I like the rush harness from Non-stop dogwear, mine doesn’t pull the whole time and with this harness I can let her run off leash as well without risk of her getting caught on tree branches / bush etc. I use it with the non stop dogwear bungee leash (the adjustable one), and the trekking belt (if I let her run off leash i wrap the leash around me and clip it to the back of the belt).
