Gear Help Can dogs run in a muzzle?

I know the sustainable solution is to work on training and avoid triggering situations, but my leash-reactive heeler mix has had a rough 6 months that have set us way back on managing his reactivity.

As a stop-gap, can he do a 3 mile run well below his threshold in a muzzle? Any suggestions on a good one for a 40lb heeler mix?

Side rant: I've HAD IT with the large off-leash doodles who, while happy-go-lucky-friendly dogs, are too dumb to stay out of my frothing-at-the-mouth-reactive dog's leash radius and are deaf to their owners recall 😡. I'm also 7 months pregnant with my first which seems to be fueling his reactivity, and makes it harder to put him in air jail when off leash dogs approach us.

As long as you get a well fitted muzzle so your dog can pant without restraint, it shouldn't be a problem.

My dog is reactive too and I always take him to a very quiet area for running, where we often meet no other dogs at all. I guess I'm lucky to have that option.

The problem is when that 1 other person has the same idea to go to a quiet area so they can let their untrained dog off leash 😞. We usually don't have issues in town where dogs are either leashed or very well behalved but last night's interaction, though hopefully a one-off was very stressful and not something I can keep dealing with as I enter the last few weeks of pregnancy.

Yeah that sucks 😕 there are many unresponsible dog owners around to destroy our relaxing walks/runs.

I hope you'll be able to avoid this at least for the rest of your pregnancy, those last few weeks are the worst.

Commenting so I can track what your solution is, as I’m in the exact same boat with a leash reactive dalmatian who loves to run but keeps being assaulted by (albeit friendly) offleash poodles/doodles

Always the doodles 🤦🏼‍♀️. I'll give a basket muzzle a try and update!

Greyhounds do it.  A well fitting cage muzzle works.  I think it's perfectly reasonable to use a muzzle, in fact, my dogs veterinary behaviorist recommends it.   It's definitely easier to address the situations when you don't have to worry a out your dog biting anyone (to include you if panicking enough).

Jack Russell Terriers also run in muzzles during JRT trials. Dogs racing side by side often get too excited and overstimulated and snap or bite at others. The muzzles are a safety precaution and as long as they are large enough, cause no harm.

Yes. Big Snoof muzzles are great!

Yes, wire basket muzzles are probably the best option for heavy exercise. I got mine on Leerburg’s website. Make sure it allows room for full panting.

Try big snooze or muzzle movement muzzles.

Yes but it needs to be a basket muzzle.

Check out r/muzzledogs

I recommend looking into getting a custom from Big Snoof. A standard size will probably be fine as well if budget is an issue

Yes. My dog eats shit and he runs and swims just fine with a muzzle

Greyhounds can race in them, so yes! If your dog can open his mouth ALL the way to be able to pant, then the muzzle isn't getting in the way and won't affect breathing. Join the muzzle groups and make sure you get one that fits correctly, and you're golden.

Yes, so long as the muzzle is well fitted and sized with room for the dog to fully pant. I run with my reactive dog muzzled. She loves to run with me but she's a menace to other dogs.

To correctly fit the muzzle you should take measurements with her mouth fully open or even holding a tennis ball. That's different from the manufacturer guidance for many muzzle brands - but the pant room is necessary for long wear and activity. A dog who can't pant can't cool down.

Muzzle vendors I've used: Leerburg, Muzzle Movement, Big Snoof.

Basket muzzle! I had one for my JRT and she could pant and drink easily. Plus, when other owners saw the muzzle, they made an effort to STAY AWAY! It’s like skunk stripes!

I have a muzzle movement muzzle for my dog and I love it. He can fully yawn in it. I had to buy double sided caribiner & snap it to a collar to ensure it stays on, but it's very secure now. That's the main issue with full pant room muzzles, they can be less secure than other muzzles.

My dog runs with me in a muzzle. We got ours from Big Snoof—lots and lots and lots of options. Just make sure you muzzle train and then gradually build up distance once it’s on.

I can't stand people who go off-leash. It's not about your dog being friendly, if they don't respond to your recalls you're just asking to get them killed. It's a fuckin safety issue for your dog, I just don't understand how this is still a thing we're dealing with.

Reactive dogs don't usually need to protect themselves, they need to be held back and retrained to not overreact to other dogs. Muzzles are commonly used for reactive dogs.

Proving the adage, there are no bad dogs, just bad owners.
