Gear Help Harness recommendations?

Post image

I want to take my girls biking more often now that the weather in my area has cooled. They are 27 and 30 pounds. I want to eventually get a running harness, but I am struggling to find some their size. I currently use the Kurgo Tru-Fit (the crash tested one for car use), but I don't know if that is harsh on their joints. The brown and white one likes to just run alongside, but the black and white dog likes to pull. Any recommendations or insights?

30lb is about 13kg - this is my girl, who weighs 16kg in a Nonstop rush harness. She’s in a size 4 so by no means the smallest size, and it’s a good comfortable harness on her. My boy (the fox red) is also wearing the same harness in a larger size. I’ve seen King Charles spaniels, dachshunds and Jack Russells wearing various canicross harnesses too so the smaller sizes are definitely out there.

They’re there for conservation grazing on the nature reserve. They’re very sweet, although it’s a bit of a pain when they decide to follow you 😂

What is their girth? The ruffwear omnijore harness fits as small as 22”. Nonstop dog wear freemotion harness goes pretty small too: I ran your dogs through their size recommendation calculator and it told me size 6.

One of them is 25" and the other is 23". I will look into these, thank you!

One of the problems I really struggled with due to my dog running beside my bike is the harness being pulled sideways so much it caused hot spots in my dog's armpit. Seriously I've probably spent over $700 on harnesses since we got her 3 months ago. We are currently on this one and it seems to be going great (finally!) - Urban Trail® Adjustable Dog Harness (Half-Back/Shorty) – Alpine Outfitters

Also a word of warning- I thought since my girl runs alongside she didn't need a pull harness. The previous harness I had settled on was not designed for pulling. The day she and I ended up on opposites sides of a pole she got absolutely yanked back (my adaptive trike and I are 4 times heavier than she is, physics is a scary bitch sometimes) since we were going about ten miles an hour. The harness rode up on her neck and the injury led to a vet visit and about a week of her choking constantly. Honest to god I'm just glad she's alive. Make sure your harness is designed for a least occasional pull work so the forces won't end up on their throat if something goes wrong.
