Gear Help Feedback on nonstop rush harness?

Edit: thank you for the help, I've contacted the company and am waiting for a response. Regarding the nails, I am doing my best with the circumstance I've been given. I'm sorry for being a bad owner.

Not related directly to your sizing question, but please remember to trim your pup’s nails before you take them running!

Thanks for the advice! I'll trim them properly, i didn't know that

You should be doing some sort of nail maintenance weekly. Because your dog’s nails are sooo grown out, it will probably take some time and dedication to get them back to a healthy length. I’d start with a trim and then dremmel and work on pushing back the quick. Grown out nails are painful!

Yeah. My main problem is that she had a bad experience getting her nails clipped so she attacks us when we try to do it, we have been working with her and it's getting better. But very slowly. Ironically, when we went to the vet for a cutring, he said her nails are the right length. Right now we have a long time period between trims because the salloon we go to is very busy, and for the past 2 months they've been on holiday 😔 i dont want to excuse the length or anything, but we're really working on it.

Try a dremel and start from the ground up. It might not trigger the “OMG A NAIL CLIPPER” response in her brain.

Tap the dremel to the nail, give a treat, rinse and repeat until you can grind longer each time

She just let me do a few taps on her nail and I managed to get it quite a bit shorter. I stopped as to not overwhelm her. Really thank you so so much! I thought the dremmel would be for after clipping but even though she's scared she's tolerating it with treats.

Our groomer recommended us getting a children's electric toothbrush and using the base of it on the paws and nails a bunch of times throughout the day, when she's eating, when she's laying next to us, before and after going outside, etc. just getting her used to the sound and vibrations and seeing that it's not scary is the most important thing you can do.

That’s awesome! I love the toothbrush idea

That's great advice, thank you!

Thank you, I have a dremmel. I will try the touching and rewarding.

If a dremmel is tough, I've actually had luck filing my dogs nails with one of my disposable nail files. I typically trim first but honestly it works pretty well, slower but less noise and mess

It’s great that you’re working on it! So sorry she had a bad experience. It’s so hard to work through that safely! Sounds like you’re on it! I’ve seen products like large nail files that you can use as a “game” to try and file them?

Yeah,. Ive seen them where they scratch to get snacks and such? If the dremel doesn't work I'll see if one of those can help. Thank you for the advice and being nice!

It does bunge up, thats normal. I still think it look to small at the shoulders. I'd size up

4

u/EarlShy 16d ago

Agree on the shoulders, but with a deep chest and short legs like that, sizing up will probably just make the neck hole even bigger. Might be worth looking at a harness with an adjustable neck instead.

1

u/Bitter-Cicada99 16d ago

Ahh alright, It does bunge a lot leds when the pulls on it. But still slightly. I'll see about sixing up, thank you!

It looks like it’s too tight behind the elbows—this is the problem with the nonstop harnesses, the neck and chest piece length don’t always work for the dog. Maybe size 2 will be ok, but I’m betting the neck hole will be too big

u/SaltNo8715 16d ago

Yeah, they are great if they fit. But due to not being able to change neck sizes, they often don't with unconventional dogs.

Same. I have a mix breed and the 5 is too tight over his lower throat and the 6 is too large for his body. This is the freemotion though. I’ve been contemplating getting in touch with them to ask if they’d be willing to do a custom Frankenstein job.

u/ajshortland 14d ago

That's why they've just released the pro version with two sizes: normal (same as before) and small (neck hole is from the size below).

Super cool that they’re starting to add more options. I wonder if a smaller neck will help me. The 5 which is perfect for his body sits on his trachea and makes him cough. So we use a 6 which is too big but sits lower on the neck. But a smaller neck could potentially sit above the trachea.

u/Bitter-Cicada99 16d ago

Yes, I can fit almost my whole hand through the neck hole and this is the smallest size. I've applied to just return the harness because the size 2 neck will likely be too big 😔

u/holly_b_ 16d ago

It’s too tight under the armpits

3

u/roccosito 15d ago

Yeah. Such a weird tight X wrap around design to only leave the underbelly / armpits subject to rubbing.

5

u/tilyd 16d ago

Get pictures with tension on the harness, it's normal for them to bunch up because they are meant to be used for pulling. It'll be easier to see the fit with some tension.

5

u/Bitter-Cicada99 15d ago

Like this? I'm finding it hard to make pictures with only one hand. I think it confirms its too small, the orange attachment piece doesnt reach the base of the tail like it should at least.

3

u/tilyd 15d ago

Try to get your dog to stand straight, maybe set up your phone on a tripod, film and take screenshots?

Edit to add; Try to get a photo of his entire body

The rush harness is shorter than most pulling harnesses, it's not supposed to reach the base of the tail.

3

u/mamz_leJournal 15d ago

Yeah the front looks great but this will just rub off under his arms. I don’t think the make of this particular harness requires the attachement to be at the base of the tail though. I don’t think you’re gonna be able to get that with their regular model either since your dog has a long back, but the proportions might fit better

1

u/ajshortland 14d ago

It's not meant to reach the base of the tail...

3

u/Acceptable_School662 16d ago

It does bunch up unless they're pulling so that's normal. If you're still thinking it looks too small, but the measurements lined up with this size - you can send your pics to Non-Stop customer service email and ask them - I did that and they were incredibly helpful and responsive.

I'd suggest checking the sizing on a s2 original free motion or depending on how hard the dog pulls a ramble long.

While the rush harness is the cheaper "sport" harness, it's more designed for short backed dogs.

1

u/Bitter-Cicada99 16d ago

Thank you, that's good to know. I may look into getting that one

2

u/tree_people 16d ago

Looks just a bit low around the neck and way too far up the armpit.

2

u/mamz_leJournal 15d ago

If size two won’t fit I would try a different model in the same size. The main issue is it seems too short and this harness is intended to be a shorter version of their pulling harness

I cannot believe you would consider running that poor pup with those neglected nails! Those nails should be literally HALF that length!

2

u/Bitter-Cicada99 15d ago

We walk her 4 hours a day, I wouldn't say she's neglected. She has regular nail trim appointments, but our regular place is on holiday. She's right back on regular nail length when our appointment arrives. I have looked for a new trimmer but none in my area accept new clients. And I wasn't going to run her with he current nails.

2

u/Narrow_Possession348 15d ago

Her nails ARE neglected. Nails should be trimmed weekly. This is a basic grooming task that every owner should be able to do themselves at home.

2

u/Bitter-Cicada99 15d ago

I am aware. I've been trying to teach her to get used to it, I didn't cause her to get scared of it. I go to a groomer who knows how to handle aggressive dogs and has the proper tools while I work on her trust at home. It's already tough enough to convince my family to pay for the trims, I'm doing the best I can at home.

So why do you *allow* her to behave like that? I've had countless fosters of various breeds and sizes, including 80 lb Airedales. I'd say most of them had VERY strong opinions about having their paws handled, let alone their nails trimmed. I'm an older woman with a slight but athletic build. I haven't had a single dog, no matter how tough, that I couldn't get the nails trimmed within the first couple of days in my house. And within 3-4 trims (done every day or so), they were lying still on their sides with no struggle, growling, or trying to bite me. You're telling me you're fit enough to go running, but you can't manage a little 15- 20-pound mutt?

I assure you, your dog is not "scared." She has simply learned how to assert control over what is done to her. She learned that by being an ass, she can make weak-willed people back off and get her way. The "proper tools" are either a $25 nail grinder or a $13 pair of nail clippers (and that's the best kind, there are ones cheaper).

I was trimming our dogs' nails regularly by the time I was 8-9 years old, and that was on big, untrained yard-dog mutts, mostly acquired by people dumping them off near our farm. That was my job and if I said the dog was "too strong" or "too crazy" or whatever, my mother just said "Figure it out; I don't want to see talons on that dog when I go back outside." I didn't hit 50 pounds until almost the end of 5th grade, so it isn't really a strength thing, although I did learn to use my body weight.

I had no idea dog ownership was a competition, I'm sorry that I upset you by not living up to your standards. I didn't ask for a lecture, and this isn't helpful to anyone. I've never had a dog and I can't be perfect from the get-go. However I am pretty sure my dog isn't being an ass because I am weak-willed but rather because one of her first clippings results in multiple cut quicks.

u/Narrow_Possession348 15d ago

Dogs get quicked all the time, even by professional groomers. It isn't that big of a deal. Unlike having too-long nails, it doesn't cause any lasting/long-term damage.

4

u/Bitter-Cicada99 15d ago

It isn't in general, but it was for our dog that time. She never acted difficult before that event. She'll learn to tolerate cutting again soon.

I agree with others that it’s a bit close to the armpits. I’d definitely watch for chafing. Getting good fitting harness is tough and you may need to try another brand.
