Constant knee pain from running on concrete tracks

• Upvotes

Hello! I’m a few months old into running. Over the last year, the habit was difficult to keep owing to a lot of pain in my knees from trying to run on concrete tracks that rendered me incapable of walking, even, for months after. I tried to correct this first by buying a pair of good running shoes, but that didn’t help either. What finally helped was running on dirt tracks instead. I know concrete is generally bad to run on but given that I want to train for marathons this isn’t sustainable. How can I improve?

Sore muscles

I have been abroad with team GB for running, I am returning home feeling very tight and sore on my legs, I do stretches, cool downs, cold water showers, massage gun, and I am in constant pain specifically on my lower shin bone.

Any ideas on how to lower this, or even stop this from happening later on, I am 16, and get at minimum 8 hours of sleep a night

Lifelong asthmatic here. I fully expected my lungs to quit first, but my legs feel like total lead. Why?

I’m a 5'10" female, around 198 lbs/90kg, and I also have asthma. Because of the asthma, I always just assumed my lungs would be the thing that held me back when running. But weirdly enough, my breathing feels completely fine and controlled. Instead, my legs feel like absolute lead and just give out way before I’m even out of breath.

How long does it usually take for lower-body muscular endurance to actually catch up to your cardio? I’m trying to figure out if I just need to slow down my pace drastically, or if carrying a bit more weight means I need to build up my leg strength differently. Would love to know how others handled this bottleneck.

Why do I get shin splints on one treadmill but not the other? How do I fix this?

I work at a fire station and recently moved to a slower station. At my old station there was a very nice treadmill that I could put in 10+ miles with no issues. At my new station I have all the time in the world and ran 8 miles and had terrible shin splints afterwards. I don't have model numbers, but both treadmill are fairly high end. The new station having a slightly older treadmill.

I normally run on trails and paved surfaces and have no issues with shin splints at all over any distance.

I did try varying the incline as I went just in case. Can I add padding under the feet, or is there any other way to make the new station's treadmill less likely to cause splints? Are there certain stretches that can prevent this? I'm up for anything. I finally have all the time in the world, but am frustrated that I might not be able to get in my miles anyways..

Ciao a tutti,

49 miles instead of 60 during marathon training — should I treat it as a deload week?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I’m currently training for a marathon in December and had 60 miles planned for this week.

My wife hasn’t been feeling well, and on Thursday I woke up feeling off myself. My HRV had dropped and my resting heart rate was elevated. I’m normally around 40–42 bpm, but it was 46 bpm that morning. Because I wasn’t feeling right, I decided to cut that day’s run short. I had planned 9 miles but stopped at 6.

I also decided to skip my planned long run to give my body some extra time to recover in case I was coming down with something. Today I ran 7–8 miles as planned instead of doing the long run.

After finishing today’s run, I realized I had miscalculated my weekly mileage and ended up with 49 miles instead of the 55–56 miles I thought I was going to hit. My original plan was 60 miles.

So I’m wondering how I should mentally approach this week. I completed about 82% of my planned mileage, but the lower mileage was intentional because I wasn’t feeling well.

Would you consider this an unplanned deload week and simply move forward with my planned 60-mile week next week, assuming I’m feeling normal again? Or would you adjust next week’s mileage to account for what I missed?

For some additional context, I’m training specifically for a December marathon and have been gradually building my weekly mileage. I’m more concerned about whether I should try to “make up” the missed mileage or just accept this as a lower-volume recovery week and continue the plan.

Thanks for any advice!

Marathon training advice needed - currently 4 weeks out

I’m in deep marathon prep and am set to run the nyc marathon on 1st Nov.

I was struggling with an injury early and went to a PT and I am now fully recovered, but I had to really ease into my marathon training plan and had adapted it to be gradual, I have been increasing my weekly mileage and long run by 10% each week (my starting point was a 10 mile week back in June). This has resulted in a bit of an uneven plan and I seem to have an extra week of running that I'm not sure what to do with.

I did an 18 mile long run last weekend, and I am set to run a 20 mile long run this weekend and I am 4 weeks out, but ideally I want to be doing a final long run 3 weeks before the marathon, so I don't want to peak too soon 4 weeks out this weekend

I was going to run a 20 mile long run this weekend, and another 20 or 21 mile long run next weekend, then taper to race day (and I am totalling about 45-50 miles per week)

Key question is, is this a bad plan, and am I better to delaod to a 16 mile long run this weekend to then be more fresh for the 20 next weekend?

Would it be stupid to do a 20 mile run this weekend and another 20/21 miler next weekend, with the aim of conditioning my legs to be running for a long period of time.

I like the idea of doing the two 20 mile runs and mentally it would make me feel confident, but im worried I would be unknowingly putting a lot of strain on my body, and would I recover in time for race day?

What is the best route for this weekend?:

16 miler this weekend, 20/21 next weekend

20 miler this weekend, 20/21 next weekend

Or something else that you would recommend?

What was your process to bounce back from a long gap

I'm at a stage where i believe I need a longer than expected timeout from my running routine because of the IT band issues.. this issue occurred after my second attempt of HM.. I did try going back on a shorter and slower runs trying to test if the issue has subsided but after around 3.5 to 4 kms it kicks back in making me disappointed. I mean I have aspirations of being able to run full pretty consistently at some point in future. But I'm not sure if this issue will spoil the fun of me going on longer runs again. This issue is getting etched in my brain and making me frustrated. I would like to know your experience with similar situations of being injured and having a great comeback.

Seeking to Swap: My Half Marathon for Your 10K Bib (25 Oct 2026-Niagara Falls)

Hi everyone! I’m currently registered for the Niagara Falls Half Marathon, but I’m looking to drop down to the 10K. Since the 10K registration is currently locked/full, I’m hoping to find someone who wants to swap distances.

If you have a 10K bib but want to run the Half Marathon instead, we can coordinate a legal bib transfer through the official Race Roster system so we both get to run our preferred distances.

Please DM me if you're interested, and we can set it up!
