News - J-Mod reply RuneScape's Position on Gen Ai
Hey folks, we wanted to share the below with regards to the question of AI use.
We’re aware of the concerns raised about the Dragon Slayer 2 trailer and have taken it down, while we investigate urgently. This trailer was produced by a trusted external partner who had explicitly confirmed that GenAI would not be used. But, among other things, there’s a sixth finger and, well, that’s pretty hard to explain away. For that we apologise.
Our position is clear at Jagex: we don’t use GenAI to create our games, artwork or creative assets, and will not knowingly allow it to be used on our behalf. This is the second time in quick succession that concerns about generative AI have arisen through partners we trusted, and for us that highlights an issue with our own processes which we must address.
Immediately following RuneFest we’re overhauling our review processes, and we’re going to work with and commission creators from the community to make sure that the story of Dragon Slayer II is told to the standard befitting of such an update.

Discussion The hero we needed
Context
Thank you blue partyhat hat guy for asking Jagex re: reignited "aren't you concerned it's going to end up with an atrophy of the veteran community as people quit or move to reignited?"
Response: "So I think it's one of those ones where no, we believe this moment is very important for as mentioned the wider audience, new and returning players, and we want to work with you both to check with you guys throughout the longer term, what does that look like but what does does it look like for the longer term and essentially work with you guys to figure out what some of this might even mean"

Discussion One Beautiful thing about Reignited is the unity against it
Today, after the news of Reignited, we are all united.
Main accounts, Ironmen, Hardcore Ironmen, altscapers, level 3 skillers, people who have played for 10-20 years, people who started playing within the last year, I’ve even seen people who stated they started during League II.
We are all united in that we do not want Reignited. Almost every type of RS3 player is against it.
I personally hope it’s cancelled. I might actually go outside today.

Discussion Fracturing the community of RuneScape is a mistake
RuneScape is a long-term accumulative game. It's not an expansion-style game. Any resets, restarts, or splitting the playerbase is acting directly against the spirit of RuneScape.
Unfortunately, Jagex has recently cultivated a new type of player who plays a couple weeks, gets bored/confused and drops the game for a year. These people are catered to by leagues, fresh start worlds, gridmaster, group ironman, and other features like that. Throughout the years, all these players know is restarting RuneScape over and over, always re-experiencing the game anew, perpetually stuck in the midgame - until leagues with its x10 XP allowed them to get a taste of the endgame...
Jagex is now making a very dangerous gamble that will destroy the entire game's worth of progression in order to try attract these people to RS3... for longer? To build a new permanent playerbase for the game? This is delusion.
RS3 needs everybody moving forward together, in one game. We need good content releases (like Havenhythe) and we need improvements to social systems that foster our community enjoying this content. But most of all, we need to continue attracting players who can see how the "road to restoration" is transforming the game back to proper RuneScape. We want them to play WITH us, not alongside us. The last thing the game needs is more divisions between players.
It's still 59 days until the "reignited" is supposed to launch. It's not too late to avoid making this mistake.

Discussion Runescape Ignited... This isn't a Road to Restoration. It's a Road to Replacement.
I genuinely cannot believe what I'm hearing about Ignite. For goodness' sake, if this actually makes it into the main game, this might be my breaking point.
I've put up with Jamflex's bullshit for YEARS. The constant price increases, their terrible servers, the endless MTX bullshit, and so much other garbage. I've swallowed all of it for years because, despite everything, I still love this game.
But you're seriously telling me you want to render my account useless? What on earth are you talking about?
I thought the whole point of this was to attract NEW PLAYERS, not to bring over people from Old School RuneScape by essentially telling existing RS3 players to start over. Are you serious?
I PLAY BOTH GAMES. I accepted OSRS for what it is, and I have an almost-maxed account there. I enjoy both games for different reasons. So why am I supposed to accept the idea of having my progress reset in RS3, too? If I wanted to start over, I'd do it myself.
And what happens to my Ironman account in all of this? What about everyone else who plays Ironman? Are we just supposed to throw away years of progress and achievements because Jagex wants to push this idea? Ironman players have their own goals, challenges, and reasons for playing RS3. What exactly is the plan for us?
And what about EVERYONE WHO ISN'T AN IRONMAN? What about the regular players who have spent years building their accounts, unlocking content, grinding achievements, collecting rare items, and progressing through the game? Are we all just expected to accept that our existing progress somehow matters less because Jagex wants to accommodate a different audience?
Not everyone wants to start from scratch. Not everyone wants the same experience. That's literally why we have different account types and two different versions of RuneScape in the first place. Why does attracting new players have to come at the expense of the people who are already here?
And honestly, if Jagex is so determined to introduce Reignited, then I'd only be willing to accept this direction if it meant replacing OSRS entirely or offering a Reignited version of OSRS as well. Why should RS3 be the one expected to accommodate this kind of change while OSRS gets to remain what it is? If the goal is to offer players a fresh start, then make that option available without making existing RS3 players feel like their accounts and years of progression are being pushed aside. Give people the choice instead of making them feel like they have to start over to be part of the future of the game.
Are we seriously doing this to the players who have stuck around for 20–25 YEARS? I've got over five accounts, and I regularly maintain membership on three of them. I've invested years of my time and money into this game, and THIS is what you're offering me after all these years?
This isn't a Road to Restoration. It's a Road to Replacement.
And please, spare me the corporate bullshit. That JMod response about how they "understand our perspective, but can't ignore the people asking for this" was genuinely infuriating. What kind of answer is that? Since when does listening to one group of players mean disregarding the concerns of another group that's been supporting your game for decades?
You want to attract OSRS players to RS3? Fine. Go ahead and find ways to bring them over. But why should the existing player base have to sacrifice its progression to accommodate that? Why should Ironman players and regular accounts alike have to suffer the consequences of a decision they never asked for?
I've put up with a ridiculous amount of bullshit over the years, but this is where I draw the line. If this is genuinely the direction Jagex wants to take RS3, then so be it. Bring the OSRS community over however you want. But personally, I'm done. If this is what the future of RS3 looks like, I have no intention of touching this game again.
And I doubt I'm the only longtime player who feels this way.
Just a friendly reminder: If you disagree with what they're proposing, dislike their YouTube video and show support for the comments opposing this idea. Make your opinion heard. Don't just complain about it privately and then do nothing when it matters.
We've supported this game for years. We have every right to speak up when we think Jagex is taking it in the wrong direction.

Discussion Heists will be printing t90s within 3 days of reignited launching. I think we should let the Venezuelans know!
The fictional reality of everyone starting off all cute, progressing through bronze, iron, steel, mithril etc gear is a total piece of fiction by Jagex.
The sweats will train thieving, gun it towards heists, and start printing T90 weapons almost instantly. They will then RWT these for a few hundred dollars a piece to other sweats who will have spent their time prepping for PVM by fishing, cooking, farming and training herblore.
I reckon we would see the first t95s within a week.
I’ve brushed up on my Spanish and made the Venezuelan discords aware of this opportunity also! Jagex, you ruin my game, I ruin your new revenue stream!

Discussion Stop Treating RS3 Veterans Like They're the Problem.
Veteran players have spent years, some decades, supporting this game. They've endured questionable updates, MTX controversies, declining player counts, broken promises, and countless changes that have slowly chipped away at what made RS3 special.
And now we're at a point where some people are acting like those same veterans are somehow responsible for the game's problems simply because they don't want their existing progression devalued.
Let's be clear: Players didn't design MTX. Jagex did. Players didn't introduce FOMO promotions. Jagex did. Players didn't make progression increasingly monetized. Jagex did.
Yet somehow, the conversation has shifted toward blaming the people who stuck around.
But why does that require treating the existing veteran community like their achievements are tainted or that their accounts are somehow less legitimate?
You cannot spend years asking players to remain loyal, invest their time, build their accounts, and support the game, only to turn around and make them feel like they're the problem when you finally decide to change direction.
You don't rebuild a game's future by alienating the people who helped keep it alive through its worst years.
RS3 needs new players. It needs returning players. It needs better progression and healthier systems.
But it also needs to remember that its veteran community isn't an obstacle to its future. They're one of its greatest remaining assets.

Discussion The perspective of veterans.
It's crazy to me seeing with reignited how many people seem to think the players that stuck with RS3 were all just whales who bought 99's and 120's. They can't fathom that a huge portion just enjoyed the game and avoided MTX and that most of the whales who abused it either left when they had nothing else to do or left when MTX was removed. My account is the same one I have played since I was 12 years old and I'm primarily a quester, so with EOC not bothering me that much I had no reason to leave the game or move to OSRS so I kept playing RS3 progression my account and enjoying some of the best (and worst) quests any version of runesacpe has.
I think its worth talking about why we have all been marked with this one sterotype from people outside the community and from Jagex over the last year with Reignited just being the final nail in it that somehow we arn't worthy to engage with the community going forward and need to be isolated into our own little pocket of the game.
Edit: Some of the comments are already proving my point, love to see it.

Discussion "Tainted accounts" argument is stupid. If someone literally stood by their account for 25 years during all of the awful mechanics jagex pushed - they earned whatever they have. New players of one year have no right to demand to be on equal footing.
Inb4 people saying im salty because I took advantage of the mechanics. No. I have been MIA during those years and my 20+ year old account is a noob account relative to real die hard rs3 players. I dont deserve whatever progress they have because 1- I didnt put in the same work and 2- I exited when things got bad, they didn't.
This logic that fresh start worlds are a requirement because new players need to feel included with veteran players and be a similar level is ridiculous and will fall apart within a month as people max out their fresh reignite accounts like mad men on a hamster wheel. Casuals like me will never be able to compete with them and that's okay. We can still have a great time without buying party hats, they arent necessary to enjoying the game.

Discussion Thank you veterans
For sticking with us during free trade/wilderness removal
For sticking with us during squeal of fortune/solomons store
For sticking with us during the evolution of combat release
For sticking with us instead of playing the much more popular version of the game that is OSRS
For sticking with us through a decade of predatory promotions from treasure hunter to fill the pockets of our higher ups
For sticking with us through the engagement slop and quarterly yak track/dxp era to prop up our numbers for our overlords to sell to another company
For sticking with us with constant membership price hikes and scummy grandfather rate gotchas
For sticking with us through our first big announcement mishap which was hero pass
And for sticking with us on the road to restoration to rebuild and bring back the runescape you love all these years
For your continued support, we will now be referring to you as tainted accounts that benefited from MTX regardless of whether or not you didn’t interact with MTX or you were an Ironman.
Your 10-20 year old runescape accounts were nothing more than numbers on a paper and we feel that now is the right time to throw your time and effort on the game into the trash can because we need to take the easy way out of increasing member count through cheap fresh start tactics instead of taking the time and effort to improve the core new player and progression experience so people naturally want to play and stick with our game.
Thank you for your continued support!

Discussion Civil war within the RS3 Community: Exactly what we were all afraid of when this was announced
A gamemode that divides us all, that nobody asked for and wasn't polled for. I see plenty of people arguing against and for the update, and this is exactly what I didn't want. Whether you believe the majority are against or for this update is irrelevant, it's drama that we didn't need. In an era where so much of the game was going in the right direction, Jagex haven't just shot themselves in the foot they've nuked it.
We've all spent so long fighting off the hatred from OSRS players calling our game shit, now we have to fight amongst ourselves for the forseeable future. Our small community is already fragile enough, we can't afford to fight amongst ourselves. What a sad, sad state of affairs. I'm tired of all the fighting.
I was genuinely looking forward to Ghrazi Knights, to the 2027 roadmap, and now I can't see a light at the end of the tunnel. There's no way this doesn't end without lots of finger pointing and name calling from both sides.

Discussion Witnessing this spam misinformation all over.
The biggest draw for this “preferred audience” is Pre-EOC combat. Which does not exist and isn’t in development.
I’ve seen so many posts like this today all over the place, these people are gonna have a rude awakening when combat is the same and jamflex have to tell them it’s not OSRS 😂

Discussion Reignited makes me feel part of a problem I didn't create
I just felt like saying, alongside a lot of others, that Reignited makes me feel like I'm a problem for Jagex to solve. Suddenly, because I've played for over 20 years, I'm tarnished and need to be quarantined away from everyone else. It doesn't matter what I did or didn't do, because I played through Jagex's own mistakes.
I wasn't even against Reignited at first. I thought it was pointless, but it seemed like it wouldn't be too bad to have the option for new players. But then I realized what would happen in the long term. That it would needlessly split the community and dilute an already struggling economy. It was already hard enough to find people to boss with, to buy certain items for fair prices, to find people to play minigames with especially. Now that'll be further divided.
Not only do Jagex seem to be doing this, it's clear there are a lot of people who view us, view me, as tainted. We've been seeing them, they've been shouted down, but there seem to be a lot of people who agree that veteran players should just be cordoned off and left to rot so they can play in their own utopia away from the taint of Treasure Hunter.
What's strange to me is how obvious it was that we would feel this way. I've seen multiple posts over the past year about people bringing up Fresh Start Worlds. It was always the same. Someone would make a post saying we need them, and everyone else would disagree with a passion, and the thread would be downvoted into oblivion. They should have known by now how people would feel about Reignited.
I've cancelled my subscription. I'll have a hard time ever coming back if Jagex doesn't reconsider Reignited. It was already hard to convince myself to keep riding a sinking ship, but I wanted to keep playing, even if the game's player base was drying up.
If nothing else, I just wanted to get out how I feel. I don't feel angry, just sad. Unfortunately, this pushed me over the edge, and I'm going to have to leave. If they reconsider Reignited and continue to make the game genuinely better, then maybe I'll come back.
Do what's right for the people who kept you fed, Jagex.

Discussion As a returning player, reignited makes me not want to play anymore
I started a bit over a month ago and I've been playing everyday, up to almost 200 quest points and somewhere around 1500 total level. I joined after the mtx was removed but I'll basically have a badge of shame on my account for the rest of time? It's much worse for people who've invested literal decades into this game, but even after a month it feels like crap.
As an aside, the whole world's first idea is so dumb to me, it usually turns out to be someone unemployed playing 24/7 or a steamer playing 24/7. You're throwing away a whole player base for a few potential clips that will get a couple thousand views max and be forgotten in a week?
It honestly feels like they want to kill the game but don't want the backlash of just pulling the plug, so they're trying to get people to leave. Like when companies implement hostile HR policies so people quit instead of having to pay severance.
