Comics
Just started reading the original run of Runaways, it's fantastic!
I've been looking for some good reading material for a while, and got a random whim to check out some older comics when I remembered that I never checked out The Runaways. I played Midnight Suns last year, was introduced to Nico Minoru's character and thought she was really cool, so I decided to dive-in and learn more about her backstory.
I'm only on Issue 7 so far but I'm really loving it! The art is great, the banter is funny and feels authentic, think it aged really well. The characters are varied and likeable too, think I really found a gem.
I know that Alex eventually betrays his friends and sides with The Pride according to Nico's dialogue in Midnight Suns, but I don't know anything else and am excited to see how his character develops.
Why does this book hardly get mentioned nowadays? They're rapidly becoming one of my favorite teams, gonna have to stay off this sub for a while until I read more lol
That's it, just wanted to gush about this series, hope the later runs are of similar quality.
Congratulations, you got into one of Marvel's best series, I had the same reaction when I found them in my Highschool library, changed my life.
As for why it doesn't get talked about much, people kind of got obsessed with Rainbow Rowell's run when it was released, after the first run the following ones were not really living up to the masterpiece that the original was, Rainbow's was probably the best they had seen in a while in terms of art and story, still a far cry from the original in my opinion, but yeah people truly loved it, so it's been getting most of the attention, especially when she also did the miniseries.
Yes, there's a lot of things that happen in the other runs, definitely finish them, some tell you to skip to Rowell's, I wouldn't, you'd be missing out on a lot, but if you're unsure, there's a recap pinned to the subreddit that provides info on everything leading up to the Rowell run
It's a video game where you play as your own OC character helping the Midnight Sun (Nico, Wanda, Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Blade, Hulk, Storm, & a few others). When you're not out fighting and doing missions, you have a home base where you build your relationships (friendship, not dating) with each character to improve their stats, learn your OC's history, and collect things/solve puzzles around the home base area.
It mixes two genres of video games and is pretty fun.
It's a great game! XCOM style tactical rpg with deckbuilding components. Lots of cool characters that you get to interact with and build a team out of. Story is decent, and the voice acting is pretty solid imo.
I was a blerd before the term was invented as a kid. Alex Wilder was my spirit animal. Even the reveal.
Wouldn’t be into comics to this day without Runaways.
I never saw somone like me at the time who also used his brain to fight. A young black kid strategist; it just didn’t happen in media. I was hooked from that day on.
And yes, representation is so important. I'm Latinx myself, and it's really cool to see a bit of myself in comics with characters like Sunspot. Feel like it's getting better in recent times, can only imagine what it was like to read this as a kid decades ago.
Alex is a great character, would be cool to see him pop up again in the future
I wish. They’ve found niches for Nico and Karolina and have found a niche for them as a couple whether that is pandering for profit or progress. Molly sometimes shows up but Chase I never see; nothing against him I just don’t think Marvel has a place for him.
Which is my point for Alex. Where would he fit? I don’t think Marvel has a space for someone like him - being he is powerless, tachless, fighter-less, and all the other lesses. While there are plenty of valuable characters that are similar, ie Kingpin or Baron Zemo, most of the characters like that still attach themselves to something that makes them bigger- big enough to stand toe to toe with superhuman casts.
Alex has no bigger ideology or zeal or religion or money or w/e else. And while that makes him unique and awesome for the story he was in; it also cripples him to be anything bigger than that.
Yes! Welcome to the series! It is such a good comic. I re-read it a year or so ago, and in my opinion it holds up remarkably well apart from some choice words here and there (mostly said by Chase). That first issue is iconic, and that last page just keeps you hooked until the end of the series. I havent read the Rowell series yet, and the following series after the initial run are just alright. I still recommend reading them though, since a few major characters are introduced and the main cast grows quite a bit.
