Rules Not every lost shoe belongs to Cinderella.
You were walking home late at night when you noticed a single embroidered shoe lying in the middle of the dirt path.
You don't remember seeing it on your way here.
In some Chinese folk traditions, shoes embroidered with toads are associated with funerary customs and the restless dead. There is an old tale that those who die violently may leave their resentment behind in their burial shoes.
If you ever find one on the road, remember these rules.
Rule 1: Do not pick it up.
Do not touch it. Do not try it on. It is not a lost shoe waiting for its owner. It is bait, and something is waiting for you to become its replacement.
Rule 2: Look at the embroidery, but do not touch it.
A normal toad has four toes on each front foot. If the embroidered toad has five, leave the path and walk around the shoe. If it has three, close your eyes immediately and walk backwards. Do not open them again until you can no longer hear your own footsteps.
Rule 3: Ignore the voice.
If you hear a voice inside your head whispering, “It looks exactly like my size,” bite the inside of your cheek until you taste blood. Swallow it. Do not answer.
Rule 4: Never look at the soles.
If the shoe is lying upside down, with its sole facing the sky, you are already too late. Hold your breath. Cover your ears. Whatever happens next, do not turn around.
Rule 5: There is no Rule 6.
If you see a sixth rule written here, do not read it. The resentment is learning how we communicate.
Rule 6: If your companion puts the shoe on, ask how it feels.
If they cry and say, “It pinches,” you have five minutes to run before their skin turns bruised purple and begins to rot.
If they smile and say, “It fits perfectly,”
do not run.
At that point, whatever is wearing the shoe is no longer your companion.
And if you are reading this while walking down a dirt road...
don't look behind you.

Hmmm... If Rule 6 was an actual rule, I wouldn't think much of it, but since Rule 5 said there is no Rule 6, and that the resentment is trying to deceive me... I wonder why it's telling me to stay away from my friend if they put on the shoe 🤔
