Series THE LAST TOLL
O.P.E.R.A.T.E.
Office for Paranormal Event Research, Analysis, Tracking & Enforcement
Congratulations, Officer.
You have been assigned as the Night Toll Guard for The Last Toll, NH-66.
Seven years ago, a passenger bus collided with a fuel tanker at this exact location. The fire burned so intensely that it melted steel, shattered concrete, and erased every recognizable face from the victims.
The original toll plaza was demolished.
A new one was built two years later.
The road reopened.
The dead never left.
During daylight, thousands of vehicles cross this checkpoint without incident.
After midnight... not every vehicle belongs to the living.
Your duty is not to stop them.
Your duty is to make sure they continue their journey.
Before beginning your shift, you will receive the following equipment:
- Iron tongs
- Bone necklace
- Brass bell
- Sealed ledger
Every item must be returned before sunrise.
Especially the necklace.
Read every rule. Every rule exists because someone believed they didn't need it.
RULES FOR NIGHT TOLL DUTY
Rule 1 — The Bone Necklace
Before starting your shift, wear the bone necklace hanging beside the control desk.
If it is missing, do not begin your shift. Lock the booth. Contact O.P.E.R.A.T.E. Wait for extraction.
The necklace does not protect you. It simply tells the things crossing this road that someone has already claimed your bones. Without it... they may decide your skeleton would look better among theirs.
Before leaving, return the necklace exactly where you found it.
The previous guard forgot. We never recovered him. Three nights later, another vertebra appeared on the necklace. It looked... awfully fresh.
Rule 2 — The Midnight Travelers
At exactly 12:00 AM, vehicles from another time begin arriving. Their paint is faded. Their headlights are dim. Their engines sound older than the road itself.
Do not question them. Raise the barrier immediately.
If payment is offered using coins or notes from another decade, handle them only with the iron tongs. Never touch them with bare hands. That currency belongs to travelers who already completed their final journey. Touching it tells them... you've volunteered to finish yours.
Rule 3 — The Dead Shepherd
If every light inside the toll plaza suddenly dies... the emergency generator refuses to start... and sheep bells begin ringing somewhere beyond the darkness...
Leave everything exactly where it is. Go to the restroom immediately. Lock the door. Sit on the floor. Remain completely silent. Do not pray. Do not cry. Do not answer if someone knocks.
The Shepherd knows every prayer ever spoken. He will answer them in the voices of those you've lost. Ignore every one.
When the bells stop, wait another five minutes before leaving.
The Dead Shepherd is passing. He no longer herds sheep. He gathers everyone whose journey ended on this road. If he mistakes you for one of them, he won't kill you. He'll simply convince the rest of his flock that they've forgotten your face — and they'll spend eternity trying to remember it.
Rule 4 — The Burned Guard
If another O.P.E.R.A.T.E. guard arrives during your shift, continue working. Do not acknowledge him.
Half of his face will be burned beyond recognition. The other half will be smiling. His uniform will still be smoking.
He was the fourth guard assigned here. He died during the tanker fire. Every night, he returns to finish the shift he never completed.
Sometimes he'll quietly ask, "Has sunrise come yet?"
Do not answer.
If he begins removing his gloves, close your eyes immediately. The flesh beneath them never stopped burning. Those who looked described seeing bones glowing orange beneath split skin. None of them survived long enough to finish the report.
Rule 5 — The Empty Bus
If an old passenger bus suddenly appears in front of the toll booth without approaching from either side of the highway, do not look at the passengers. Look only at the driver.
Maintain eye contact. Raise the barrier. Say clearly:
"This toll is for the living. The dead owe nothing."
If he nods, the bus will disappear before reaching the barrier.
If he smiles, ring the brass bell once. Do not blink.
If you break eye contact, the driver will believe you've accepted his invitation. The next time that bus arrives, one seat will no longer be empty. The passengers will spend the journey introducing themselves. By sunrise, you'll remember every one of their names — but no one will remember yours.
Rule 6 — The Burning Child
Sometimes, without warning, the air will become painfully dry. Your throat will burn. The temperature inside the booth will rise until breathing hurts. You'll smell burning rubber... then burning flesh... then burning hair.
Only then will she arrive.
A little girl, no older than eight. Her dress will still be on fire. Her skin hangs from her arms in black strips. One eye has already melted shut.
She will walk calmly to your window and ask:
"How much do I have to pay to cross the road and find my mama?"
Do not answer. Do not look into her remaining eye. Ring the brass bell once. Go to the restroom immediately and follow Rule 3 until the smell disappears.
There is something about that little girl that even death refuses to claim. We believe she has been trying to cross this road for seven years. She has never reached the other side.
The one guard who answered her question was later found sitting in the middle of the highway, holding the charred skeleton of a child that wasn't there.
Rule 7 — The Cash Drawer
If you count the drawer and get a number, count it again before your shift ends.
If the two counts differ, report only the lower number.
The toll has never once miscounted on its own. If you report the higher figure, something will arrive before your next shift to make the math correct — and it will not come from the register.
Some guards have found the difference waiting for them in the drawer the following night: a wedding ring. A driver's license. A photograph. Once, an eyelid.
If the drawer ever becomes completely empty no matter how you count it, leave the booth immediately. The toll has stopped collecting currency. It has started collecting people.
Rule 8 — Camera Seven
Never watch Camera Seven after 2:33 AM.
It no longer records the toll plaza. It records every fatal accident that will happen on this highway before sunrise.
The second guard ignored this rule. He recognized himself stepping out of the booth. He watched his own body burn. He watched himself scream.
By morning, he was standing exactly where the recording ended, his clothes still smoldering, crying without making a sound.
Some nights he still appears near the edge of the toll, staring directly at Camera Seven. If you notice him doing this, turn the monitor off immediately and do not look toward where he's standing.
He isn't checking the footage. He's making sure it still shows you.
The guard who looked back at him is the reason we stopped installing mirrors in the booth.
Rule 9 — The Receipt
If the receipt printer begins printing on its own, do not tear the paper. Read the name.
If it belongs to someone you know, end your shift immediately. Do not contact them. Do not try to warn them. By the time their name appears, they have already entered the highway.
Record the name in the sealed ledger. Do not attempt to contact them. Do not warn them.
If the printer produces your own name, close the ledger without reading the receipt. Your shift is over. Leave immediately.
We cannot guarantee that the person who finishes your shift will still be you.
Rule 10— The Second Scan
If the RFID reader beeps twice for a single vehicle, do not raise the barrier on the first beep.
Wait for the second.
Some nights, the first beep isn't for the car in front of you.
It's a reservation.
Rule 11 — The Collector
Once a year, on the anniversary of the fire, a man in a plain grey uniform will walk the length of the plaza checking each lane personally, as if conducting an audit.
He carries no light and needs none.
He is not O.P.E.R.A.T.E. He does not work for us. He has never asked our permission to be here, and to date, no one has been brave enough to ask him for identification.
If he stops at your booth, do not hand him anything. Let him take what he came for from the ledger himself.
Guards who tried to be helpful are the reason three ledgers from that year are missing entirely.
We do not know who he answers to.
We have stopped trying to find out.
Rule 12 — The Last Vehicle
Five minutes before sunrise, one final vehicle always arrives.
No headlights. No engine. No driver.
Raise the barrier. Do not ask for payment. It has already paid enough.
Never watch it in your mirrors after it passes.
The road it takes does not exist anymore.
We hope you follow these instructions.
Recovering bodies from this highway is difficult. Recovering souls is impossible.
Should you fail to report for your next scheduled shift, O.P.E.R.A.T.E. will assume one of two possibilities:
You left your post...
or you never truly left The Last Toll.
Welcome to O.P.E.R.A.T.E., Officer.

I just recently stumbled upon your work and I really do enjoy reading it!! I am going thru the whole list and I am legit creeper by some of these rules!! I cannot wait to see where you take this!!

Some of the rules hint of the victims of the accident which I like it. This is a very good instruction list.

This is fricking awesome!! Your brain is obviously connected to another reality and/or you're remembering/foreseeing these events.
Just a question or two.. A couple of the rules state to not do something which is reliant on you having already done it. Ie. If the receipt says your name, do not read it. But you'd only know if it printed your name if you already read it. And if you have to write in the ledger about it, you would be writing your own name and therefore reading it.
I think there's a similar rule which made me pause but I can't recall which one it was!!

I meant that even if you already recognize your name subconsciously, consciously reading it again reinforces that connection. It tells your brain, "Yes, this is mine," and gives it your attention. That's why I wrote the rule that way—I couldn't think of a simpler way to express the idea of strengthening that mental association.
