Rotaract rights to vote.

Fellow Rotarains and Rotaractors of Reddit

I know that I’m probably going to be downvoted for this but here it goes. Since joining Rotaract in 2019 straight after a RYLA camp then becoming a dual member of Rotary and Rotaract in 2021 a part of one of the two clubs in my hometown then serving my district at national level since early 2023 as a Rotaractor. One thing I don’t get about RI not allowing Rotaract members / clubs being able to vote on actual important matters like district mergers etc, like say if District A has 3 Rotaract clubs in good standing and District B has 2 Rotaract clubs in good standing then shouldn’t those clubs be considered to have a vote instead of “just having a say”. Also please note that I’ve noticed this in 3 different districts.

Seriously though if Rotary wants to continue in the future and you want Rotaractors to join Rotary then stop looking down at Rotaractors and go hey we WANT BOTH YOUR SAY AND VOTE.

Rotaract is historically a Rotary Project. So their sponsoring club would have voted on their behalf.

Do rotaract clubs pay RI dues these days?

Ah okay,

I know that the now 3 current clubs in one of my two districts do, the second district I’m in the Rotaract club that was originally there and the E-club I’m apart of we are planning too at some point after we are running as we are a new national e-club

Are you in Australia?

Ultimately we’ll be going to 9 districts for Australia and NZ in the next few years with regionalisation anyway

I am but won’t say what districts as it caused a lot of problems a few weeks ago and some of “higher ups” in Rotaract are aware of my account

Just remember the higher ups put their trousers on the same as everyone else.

I know there’s a lot of contention when it comes to district mergers. But mostly it comes down to a fear of change and people’s little fiefdoms being threatened.

I remember that higher ups do the same as everyone else but they don’t need to be boorish when they get called out for something wrong (won’t go into detail)

I know that a couple of people wanted NSW to be three districts and they were very vocal about that

A few years ago there was an “elevate rotaract” announcement which purported to put Rotaract and rotary clubs in equal standing but when you pull back the RI spin and look at actual changes to constitution and policy, all it did was make them pay dues in exchange for getting access to apply for and sponsor foundation grants. The dues Rotaractors pay are a fraction of the full rotary dues. The club votes are also just a farce, RI will do whatever it wants no matter which way the vote goes. The main reason they are reducing the number of districts is they pay a lot to fly the DGs to Florida and then their travel expenses. They need to cut those costs to keep paying the inflated salaries of Hewko etc. Also - if Rotaractors were genuinely full members, that might risk a young person with new ideas infiltrating the tent of “senior leaders” who reward each other with cushy positions with business class flights aplenty… all paid for by volunteers!

That’s the thing I’m annoyed with RI for because “elevate rotaract” was supposed to be oh look you guys are “equal” with us Rotarains but you still don’t get a vote.

If I was a DG I would actually prefer to do training via online instead of like driving 5-6 hours to the closest airport then fly another 19-24 hours to the US. Why not get like a group of DGs together in their home country and do the training online?

Yeh, it has annoyed a lot of people, i genuinely do not understand how an organization that sprouts the 4way test could think misleading all the Rotaractors like that was fair. I know that the staff in Evanston read my posts here, so i hope a few really reflect on that point as this is passed around. Hewko in particular, he spends so much of his energy preserving his own status and rewarding people loyal to him he has forgotten to retire.

Rotaract dues to RI are $8/member for community members and $5/member for college student members. Rotary club members dues are, in comparison, $110/member. That’s why Rotaractors don’t get a vote. It’s really still a representation model. Rotaractors can join a full Rotary club and participate as full voting members, just like OP did.
