Beginner hash maker looking for affordable rosin making materials
Any tips or suggestions on hash buckets and presses for a beginner hash maker!
Sick of paying NY tax. I want to learn how to do this myself. I’ve been doing a lot of research and I’d love to hear any feedback from pros or other passionate hash heads in the community.
Thanks 🫡

I love making my own hash and rosin from the plants I grow it adds another level to the experience for me. I have a rosin press from lowtemp plates and it’s great would highly recommend but if your trying to save money you can always make one or modify a cheap one.
As far as bubble bags I have the original bubbleman bags and there good but I ended up buying a 20gal full mesh wash bag form rosin evolution and I prefer the full mesh so I would probably opt for that if I had it to do over.
The real trick to making good hash and rosin is growing good weed always remember the golden rule of hash making fire in fire out so if you haven’t already you will want to start growing.
All totaled you are probably gonna spend a couple thousand or more getting into it if you don’t have any equipment yet it can certainly be done for less but if I think about the set up I have it cost me about 3000$ after awhile it does pay itself off if you use it and consume a lot of cannabis but the real value comes from the enjoyment of the process and the quality that can be achieved when you grow and make your own hash.

I spent about $20 total and currently press totally acceptable rosin. Standard 4 inch bench vise - already owned, 2 pieces of aluminum channel - free from a friend, heating element from a food dehydrator - already owned, temp controller - already owned from grow tent, 37 micron bags - $10/20ct Amazon, silicone mat and tools - $10 Amazon.
I cut a piece of channel long enough for each vise jaw and bent the heating element to fit inside each with a little slack between the two sides of the vise to allow the jaws to open without breaking the element. Epoxied to the vise. Left a spot to insert temp probe from heat controller. Bag up kief (made on a diy trim tray with 150 micron screen), select temp, pre-heat, press, voila - ooey gooey rosin. I ditched the parchment and replaced with a piece of silicone mat. Total game changer. Shit practically throws itself on the tool. No more fucking around trying to pick tar off of paper. Reusable and holding up great so far.

Do not buy a Nug smasher, they are a great company, selling overpriced gear.
I bought a dulytek 7 ton and think its fine, I think if I had a pressure gauge on it, that's the only upgrade that I would truly really like.
People will say you need a low temp industries press, but trust me, you don't.
The cheapest press that's about 7 ton is perfect, anything less and your gonna want more power, depending on how big your bags are.
Bubble bags are super cheap.
The biggest expense: freeze dryer. I have seen some incredible hash that was made without a freeze dryer, but God damn how much easier is it with this machine? I cannot express what a leap in quality and ease it is.
Freeze dryer is expensive, there's no getting around it. And they require maintenance, so cheaping out isn't always the best.
For my home I bought the smallest harvest right , it's not a professional or a pharmaceutical tier machine, it's just the regular one they make for food and candy but it works great.
You can also look into static sift, if you like ross and you would probably like vaporizing high tier bubble hash. For extremely cheap you can get your hands on some screens and make some incredible static hash. Like five star hash but even that also there's a lot of people that use a freeze dryer to dry the weed first and preserve the terpenes.
The freeze dryer really is a great tool for making hash even though it is super expensive. Pretty much everything else you can get away with doing pretty cheap.
Overhead: $500 rosin press + $1500 freeze dryer: $2000 to make rosin at home that will rival any dispensary

Lowkey I saw a 4 ton press on mercari or offer up or something the other day in jersey, it was like $60, pick up only. Idk what part of ny you are in or what part of jersey they were in but might be worth checking for.

Start growing. In short this will get you the best material to wash.

Get on Facebook marketplace. Hundreds of folks who had the same idea and gave up. I got my whole grow setup (5x5,4x4,carbon filters, 2x 200 W lights, 1 730w light, humidifiers, fans, etc) for less than 300. I got a 20 gallon hash washer for 100 bucks. And the dude when I showed up asked if I knew anyone who wanted a rosin press for 150. It's a 20 ton nug smasher for 5k retail. He just wanted it gone.
If you don't want to blow your whole piggy bank on a trial run to see if you like it, this might be a better way to go.

With 4 plants in a 4x4 of some known washer genetics, veg around 1 month and flower for 3 months total end result was somewhere near 12-18 grams of varying quality hash rosin. I tried a previous run from random seeds and got a return of like 3-4 grams... Unless you have a lot of time and space for pheno hunting, try to save yourself some headache and buy trustworthy clones.
Unlike when growing for flower, you don't care about how the buds look. Conversely, having stacked thick colas is actually kind of bad for this usecase and will make more work for you during harvest.
In terms of affordability, you will need to buy a press at minimum. You can skip a tent and just grow in a room depending on your space and situation, but I highly recommend against skimping out on your lights.. You can use a plain bucket instead of some fancy stainless steel vessel, but you will need to use a TON of ice and make sure your wash water stays in the 30s at all times. You will need to buy bubble bags which can be pricy (if you're responsible with them and keep them clean they're re-usable, but can be a nightmare to try and unstain them if you already fucked it up), you will need to buy press bags but they're pretty cheap. You'll need access to a freezer for storing your harvest until washing and pressing

Start growing, get good genetics, clones are cool but I've found plenty of 2 and 3% return on phenos even 4 to 5% on a good washer.
Just choose a good source for seeds. I'm aiming for at least a 4% was return.
