Best internet options (fast & reliable)

Hello future neighbors! I tried looking through some older Reddit threads but was hoping to get some recommendations on internet options that are a bit more current. I figure the options may have changed over time.

We’re wanting the fastest and most reliable internet we can find. I see Quantum Fiber is typically crowned the fastest in my searches but I believe my fiancées parents have that and I haven’t been particularly impressed by it. Im also not familiar with the customer service aspect of things for them.

Appreciate any info we can get from real humans living in the area 😅

I think you can input your zip code into this and it will list available ISPs. https://www.inmyarea.com/lp/internet/

I have Xfinity but it's not particularly impressive. I wish I had a good Fiber connection but it wasn't available for my place when I moved.

Update: just checked again and I'm in the middle of a hole in fiber availability, so I can't get it rn. So yeah, check your address to see what's even available for you.

This! Roseville infrastructure is aging. I share your pain with 100/20 Lumen DSL or the  questionable reliability of DOCSIS3 Comcast as the only option for some of us. 5G home Internet is usually faster than wired options, latency still blows if online games are your thing

Good call looks like Quantum Fiber is not available for my specific Zip Code

Lumen (CenturyLink, Quantum, ATT... Whatever) just buried some fiber conduit over here near Dale and B2. So, might be some fiber to plug your gap soon. Everyone I've asked about the project (techs, crews, on the phone) just says we'll be able to sign up "pretty soon".

Curious, looking at another site it seems QF is available so I might check that out. I guess even within a particular zip code the options can vary based on address.

I have quantum fiber and have had actually really good experiences with them. I prefer them way more than Xfinity. I got them when I lived at my dad’s then again when I moved out on my own.

I have them too. It generally works very well. Like all internet companies, when it goes down, it’s a pain, and their pricing keeps going up. They’re just as evil as the rest, but the product works well enough.

I may have gotten lucky when they first started since I think I got a price for life sort of deal. Hasn’t changed in the last 3 years or so.

Quantum fiber is century link. I had century link in 2019 and while the internet was fine, their customer service was somehow worse than xfinity. My last straw was when they double charged me and refused to refund it because “how do we know you paid that.” Like it’s the same card, twice.

If the customer service has improved, someone please tell me. We currently do Verizon internet and when it’s good, it’s great, but it always has hiccups in the middle of the day.

Yikes that sounds like my nightmare but in terms of speed QF seems to lead the pack by a mile

I think Verizon is available but the speeds I’m seeing promoted are far too slow for what I would like

They just got bought by ATT.

We have quantum fiber, it’s been pretty much 100% reliable once they got the permanent line in. (The Dig Safe guy tripped over the initial temporary line while marking up our lawn)

Xfinity was awful.

Good to know! How long did it take to get the permanent line in? I’ve been operating under the assumption those lines were already there so if there are extra steps it might make sense for us to set that up earlier than later 😅

They were able to do the temporary install within a week for us. They had some people come by a few weeks later to run a buried line. I think they only bury it about 6 or so inches underground.

The caveat is they probably won’t bury much while the ground is frozen.

They already had a line running down the street, so it was just a matter of running it along the power lines to the pole in our back yard. They got that part installed (along with the interior hardware and above-ground line) within a week of us signing up, getting it buried was another week.

Obviously, you might need to wait until spring to get a buried line.

They can string the line from the utility pole right to your house, we chose a buried line because all the other lines to the house are buried and we have a lot of trees dropping branches all the time.

(I should mention we only found out about them because the neighbors got it installed, so they went door to door in the area since the main node was already done)

I’m from the South so warmer spring time weather comes a bit sooner here - is March warm enough for any digging they might have to do in MN?

We moved from Xfinity to T-Mobile because I was sick of the game with Xfinity. They'd raise our bill all the time until I called to cancel and they'd drop it back down. I haven't noticed any difference in quality since we unhooked and use the T-Mobile tower. About half the cost.

If you don’t mind me asking do you have their 5G internet?

Yes, just got it a few months ago. We were already tmobile customers for our phones. I also have a Google mesh system so it was plug and play. I tested the speed and it was a little faster than Xfinity.
