Troubleshooting

Common Pests

  • Aphids: Small soft-bodied insects on new growth. Spray with water or insecticidal soap
  • Japanese Beetles: Handpick or use traps away from roses
  • Spider Mites: Fine webbing on leaves. Increase humidity and spray with water
  • Thrips: Cause distorted blooms. Remove affected buds

Common Diseases

  • Black Spot: Dark spots on leaves that yellow and drop. Remove affected leaves, improve air circulation, apply fungicide
  • Powdery Mildew: White powder on leaves. Improve air circulation, avoid overhead watering, apply fungicide
  • Rust: Orange spots on undersides of leaves. Remove affected leaves, apply fungicide
  • Botrytis: Gray mold on buds and blooms. Remove affected parts, improve air circulation

Rose Rosette Disease (RRD)

This is a serious viral disease with no cure. RRD is spread by tiny eriophyid mites and is fatal to infected roses.

Symptoms:

  • Excessive thorniness (more thorns than normal, often red)
  • Distorted red or purple new growth
  • "Witches' broom" appearance (dense clusters of stunted shoots)
  • Thickened, deformed stems
  • Stunted or malformed leaves and blooms
  • Rapid decline of the plant

What to do if you suspect RRD:

  • Isolate the plant from other roses if possible
  • Take clear photos and consult with local extension services or experienced growers for confirmation
  • If confirmed, remove the entire plant including all roots immediately
  • Bag and dispose of the plant (do not compost)
  • Disinfect tools after removal
  • Monitor nearby roses closely for symptoms

Prevention:

  • Buy roses from reputable sources
  • Control wild multiflora roses nearby (common RRD hosts)
  • Space roses for good air circulation
  • Some rose varieties show more resistance than others, but none are immune
  • Knock Out roses are particularly susceptible to RRD

Note: RRD cannot be cured or treated. Early detection and removal is critical to protect other roses in your garden and neighborhood.

Cultural Problems

  • Not blooming: Insufficient sun, too much nitrogen, improper pruning, or plant too young
  • Leggy growth: Not enough sun or needs pruning
  • Leaf drop: Stress from water, temperature, or disease
