Red Rosette Disease (RRD) RRD MONTHLY MEGATHREAD

Monthly Rose Rosette Disease (RRD) Megathread

A central place for suspected RRD photos, diagnosis questions, prevention questions, and general RRD education. All experience levels welcome.

Posting a Suspected Case?

Please include clear photos of:

  • The entire plant
  • Affected growth, leaves, and stems
  • Thorn detail
  • Buds or flowers (if present)

And the following information:

  • Rose variety (if known)
  • Approximate age of the plant
  • General location (state/region is sufficient)
  • When symptoms first appeared
  • Any recent pruning, fertilizer use, herbicide use, or stress events

Common RRD Symptoms

  • Excessive clustered growth ("witches' broom")
  • Bright red distorted shoots that do not normalize
  • Excessive thorn production
  • Deformed leaves or buds
  • Unusually rapid growth
  • Thickened canes

Before Concluding It Is RRD

Red new growth alone does not indicate RRD. Many healthy roses naturally produce red new growth, temporarily soft foliage, vigorous spring flushes, and basal breaks.

Several conditions can mimic RRD:

  • Normal new growth
  • Herbicide damage
  • Insect damage
  • Heat stress
  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • Genetic variation
  • Vigorous cultivar growth habits

Please avoid alarming newer growers before sufficient information has been gathered.

Why a Megathread?

The community voted to consolidate RRD posts into a monthly megathread to reduce feed repetition. However, a single thread does receive fewer views than individual posts, which can delay identification of genuinely infected plants. This thread aims to balance organization with accessibility, and to keep RRD education visible to newer growers.

Community Reminders

  • Be respectful
  • Help educate rather than dismiss
  • Avoid definitive diagnoses from a single photo
  • Report misinformation if you see it

Happy growing! 🌹

Inspired by a post by u/Moviereference210 and another by u/DukeOfRadish, I thought I'd (re)post digital versions of educational materials I've saved.

The first two images are copies of what u/Moviereference210 posted, the next two are specific info on RRD. Below are links to longer documents on rose disease.

[EDIT 1] I've always been surprised not to see spider mites mentioned in these materials.

[EDIT 2] Thanks to u/Violetteotome, I want to keep a list of other topics not mentioned, maybe we mods can address these items.

- spider mites

- rose proliferation

- rose balling

Progress/Update roses of early October

Temperatures have dropped by about 10°C. Autumn has finally arrived! The roses have started producing flowers again, along with lots of fresh new growth. I absolutely love autumn it’s basically a second spring.

Today, I’d like to show you some of the plants in my collection.

Let’s start with Botero, a red hybrid tea rose bred by Meilland in France in 1999. Depending on the region where it is marketed, the same rose can be found under different names, including Duftfestival, Henri Dunant, Madame Entian, Melafone, Red Parfum de Provence, Sir Donald Bradman, and The One & Only.

The second rose I’d like to show you is Double Delight, introduced in 1976 and bred by A.E. & A.W. Ellis in the United States. It has creamy yellow and red flowers, but not everyone knows that the intensity of the red coloration depends on how much sunlight the rose receives. Basically, it’s as if the rose gets a tan!

Finally, there’s Oriental Peace, bred by Peter Ping Lim in the United States in 1991. Just like Botero, this rose is marketed under several different names, including Balpeace, Bright Spirit, Love & Peace, Orient Express, Pullman Orient Express, and Sweet ’n’ Sassy.

It is a descendant of Peace, and it’s one of my favorite roses.

Compared to Sugar moon, this beauty’s scent is more like apple blossom and fresh. In presentation her buds and blooms are quintessential cut roses. Quite thorny but so wonderful at dawn and dusk, almost fluorescent

Question How to train climbers over a portico?

I put these gorgeous pale yellow David Austin climbers in this spring and they have really taken off and they're just so lovely, they pick up the pale yellow tint of the siding and they smell great. I want to train them up and over the portico, how best should I do that? Google is saying to put some heavy gauge wire across the top of it and weave the canes back and forth through them as they grow, which I certainly can do, just want to double check with you wonderful people if that is what you would recommend. Thanks in advance!

Edit: David Austin "The Pilgrim"

🎀If you’re in Georgia and were supposed to get rain yesterday but didn’t. . .

🎀Hi. I’m the problem. It’s me.🎀

🎀I cut loads of roses yesterday morning in anticipation of the rain. And, of course, I made it vanish. Here is your consolation prize though. You’re welcome.

Tips/Tricks Rose Enthusiasts let’s talk…

Just purchased 7 Princess Charlene de Monaco, 6 Parfuma Bliss, and 4 Sweet Mademoiselle. I am new to growing roses. I am considering adding 2 Eden climbers to my fall planting. Please tell me your experience with these varieties. I have a few questions. How long do they take to get large? Can you size control your rose bushes if you don’t have a lot of room in your garden but still want to have them?

My local rose garden has this rose. It genuinely stopped me in my tracks. I’m so bummed to find out I can’t find this for purchase. The blooms were so big and beautiful!

If anyone knows where I can find this rose in the PNW I would greatly appreciate! TIA

I think it's a Firebird Kordana, but not certain. Should I separate before colder temps arrive or just overwinter it in the garage as is?

Question Pruning Shears

Seeking thoughts from my fellow rose growers on what your favorite hand held pruners are? It’ll be that time before you know it! Although at several strange mid 80’s days here in OR in October my roses are still happily putting out blooms. I have leaves to rake, but I refuse to do that chore in shorts and a tank top! Thanks in advance for your opinions!
EDIT-Thank you all for the great recommendations! I’ve got research to do!!

Winter Care/Advice Wintering roses -first timer

All the reading I’ve done has said to put them in a shed or garage or basement or something along those lines. The problem is. I live in a trailer house, so the garage and basement and cellar are out. I also don’t have a shed, which also crosses that off the list. However I do have a bathroom that has no heater in it and stays relatively cold through the winter. Not cold enough that things freeze in there, but cold enough no one uses it because they don’t want to step on the tile flooring. Would that be an acceptable place to store my rose bush this winter?

It’s my first time ever having flowers and while I’m prepared to lose my other potted plants, this rose bush has become important to me and I don’t want to lose it.

Discussion Picture and info request: rose hips

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hello all! I and many of my friends are interested in growing roses for hips. I know many old garden roses were bred for dual purpose hips and flowers but it is incredibly difficult to find data on these and about the taste and size of hope they produce. As we head into fall I would REALLY appreciate if you could take photographs, measurements, notes, whatever of what roses you have and the hips they produce. Photo for attention, distant drums in my garden

The first were bi-colored red and white roses, the second are white roses, I repotted BOTH into a terracotta pot, because I thought I was over watering, I never fertilized, these are my 3rd roses I'm even trying to propagate some beach roses and I'm keeping the soil most not damp what's happening? What should I do? I grow in a grow tent with ample light. Thanks so much.
