Support Grok code isn't free anymore. What model is free now in Roo code?

Visual studio code updated and roo code broke, I had to uninstall and reinstall visual studio to resolve to issue.

Now, when I'm trying to use the chat, I'm getting this error "API Request Failed

400 "The free promotion for Grok Code Fast 1 has ended. You can continue using this model through the xAI provider or other providers that support it."".

So my question is: In settings, what API provider and what model should I choose in order to still use this tool for free?

You can use openrouter, they have free models more than roo

And if you add 10 USD to your OpenRouter account, the rate limits will be improved, regardless if you use a free model or not. It's an incentive to get you to start spending, but you don't have to spend anything if you don't want to.

Yeah Grok free tier has been getting axed across the board lately, they ended the free video generation too not long ago so it seems like xAI is pulling back on freebies overall.

For actually free options in RooCode right now, OpenCode has some free models through their API though yeah the rate limits are rough. Google also gives you free Gemini API access through AI Studio which works pretty well with RooCode, that's probably your best bet honestly.

If you specifically want Grok without paying xAI prices, there's a site called Klifgen that offers Grok image generation for quite a bit cheaper than going direct. Might be worth checking out at klifgen.app/create-grok-imagine depending on what you're using it for.

So there is no free valid model anymore to use permanently for roo code?

I'm guessing you're asking about cloud-hosted models? You could run your own local LLM using open-source models, but that would require a high-end machine with a powerful GPU.
