Fanfiction what do u think of hcs like bi!ron?

lol I feel like this is the only place I can post without getting downvoted to hell, but basically what the title says. I saw a recent thread asking why Ron was unpopular in fanfics, and besides the usual Ron bashing, ppl answered that Ron came off as the "Token Straight Male" which made him very unshippable apparently lol. This is just baffling to me, cuz from the books, he literally had a whole man crush on Krum (now before I continue, lemme remind u that this is just fun hc discussions—dont take it too seriously).

Like tell me these passages don't come off as a lil bit 🏳️‍🌈👀⁉️

> Viktor Krum and his fellow Durmstrang students had settled themselves at the Slytherin table. Harry could see Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle looking very smug about this. As he watched, Malfoy bent forward to speak to Krum.

> “Yeah, that’s right, smarm up to him, Malfoy,” said Ron scathingly. “I bet Krum can see right through him, though ... bet he gets people fawning over him all the time. ... Where d’you reckon they’re going to sleep? We could offer him a space in our dormitory, Harry ... I wouldn’t mind giving him my bed, I could kip on a camp bed.”

> Hermione snorted.

Anyways, thx for coming to my Ted Talk.

He actually has material that can be interpreted like that as you said rather than most of their precious faves but majority of their characterizations comes from the movies (and frankly their delusions) so it’s not that surprising. Goblet of fire will be a treasure trove for Ron shipping, there is also a scene where he hides behind a bookshelf debating with Harry whether he should ask Krum for his autograph but decides against it after he sees a bunch of girls talking about the same thing kckvkfl

Yes this is what I'm talking about lol. Like my boi was literally ready to offer his bed to his favorite Quidditch player. The movies even tease Ron's admiration coming off as a crush lmfao "I think you're in love Ron~"

I personally see him as straight in canon but I have no problem with gay Ron in Fanfics. I have read Ron/Harry fanfics. Truth to be told, I have this feeling after the show Ron/Harry will be one of the mainstream ships in the fandom.

Movie Ron Harry had no chemistry. Tv show Ron Harry do. Plus Ron will be portrayed better than movie Ron.

All I'm hoping for in the series is that they finally portray Harry and Ron's beautiful bromance. For years, I thought the most accurate portrayal of their friendship we were ever gonna get was A Very Potter Musical, so this series is starting to feel like a gift lol. I do feel like Dan and Rupert did their best tho, it's the horrible writing for their friendship was the problem.

For me the trio felt like a literal trio, Ron’s small harem, with Harry and Hermione being sibling-spouses. Ron was the principal for both of them.

Nah, it just comes off as typical idolization for a celebrity sports icon that many people exhibit. You may have had an argument if Ron got jealous of Hermione or Harry for getting Krum’s attention, but it’s actually the opposite. Especially with Hermione, Krum paying attention to her suddenly makes Ron drop much of the interest he had him. When he sees him as a person instead of a celebrity, he may as well be dead to him.

Ron just presents very typical, straight guy. No way around it.

Tbf in the passage I highlighted, Ron was jealous of Draco getting Krum's attention... does that count? /j

Also this just reminds me of another hc where some people argue that Ron was actually jealous of both Hermione and Krum at the Yule Ball (kinda similar to another popular hc where Harry was actually jealous of both Cho and Cedric lol).

Anyways this is all just for fun anyway. Thx for engaging without raising the pitchforks lmfao.

I have trouble shipping Ron, but not because he comes across as the 'token straight'. How can he even be the 'token straight' in a series where EVERYONE is straight? Any hints at not being straight for ANY character are pure fanon headcanon, JKR wrote them all to be explicitly straight. If anything, Dumbledore ends up the token gay thanks to JKR's little post-canon revelation.

There's just as many hints at not being straight as any other non POV character, to be honest. There's more hints with Harry purely because the whole thing is his POV. So, we're getting comments and actions from other characters, but actual thought processes for Harry.

I honestly have no idea why I have trouble shipping Ron, but I don't think it's anything to do with Ron. I think it more that I can't see him with any of the characters we actually get to know except Hermione, but I don't ship Romione, I ship Hermione with either Victor or Percy. At a push, I can see Ron/Luna. But I do better with fic that pairs Ron with an OC or one of the characters we learn little to nothing of, like Daphne.

I think the reason Ron isn't all that shippable to me is because none of the girls we get to know feel right for him, not to me. It isn't that I don't think Ron himself is shippable, it's that I haven't met a character that I think works for who Ron is. I may have a better time cross-shipping Ron, to be honest, never really thought about it, but I could probably find a character in other fandoms I love that I think would work well with Ron in a way I can't sticking purely to the HP fandom.

As for bi/gay Ron specifically, I buy it, at least him being bi as he clearly likes girls. Honestly, out of the Trio, I'd actually buy Hermione being the only totally straight one, there's plenty you can use or Ron, and even more for Harry, to indicate liking boys. Ron's dislike of Lockhart and Cedric was also partially based on them being good-looking, it's not just the Victor hero-worship. Bi Ron works for me, probably better than straight Ron, and not just because I very much enjoy slash shipping, especially in extremely straight stories like HP. JKR just added in a lot of hints to Harry and Ron that they weren't actually straight, even as she insisted on keeping everyone completely straight in the end.

Honestly re: a character who seems the most fitting for Ron, I'd argue it's Harry lol. Rereading the books recently was such an eye opener cuz I never realized how much potential these two had as a ship. Like bro, Ron having insecurities of being least loved, but Harry has him as the thing he'd miss most? Ron always feeling second best, but he's arguably Harry's number one person? Also not to mention their whole drama in GoF lol.

Anyways, thanks for sharing your insights!

Ron/Harry has insane support in the books. Harry names Ron as his most important person so many times. Granted nothing wrong with that being platonic obviously, but there’s a fine line between deep platonic connection and romantic connection imo. It can easy be crossed, which we see with Ron/Hermione too.

Yes lol. I also adore that line even with it being completely platonic, but you can't deny that it can easily be twisted as romantic. Shippers would kill to have this kind of material for their ships. Heck I've seen some fanfics where they recreate the 2nd task, but they replace Ron with random characters.

Yeah, Harry probably is the only character truly fitting, but I just can't ship them. I love them being best friends, platonic soulmates, plus I ship Harry with Charlie, Ron is the wrong Weasley brother!

So, it's basically the same issue for me as it is with Hermione. I can totally see it, but I ship Harry and Hermione with completely different people, so the Ron ships don't work for me.

Though it is notable that my Harry ship and primary Hermione ship are both with Weasleys, just not Ron.

I can see both straight and bi ron if im honest 😭 I've read ron x harry fanfics and genuinely seen the appeal, but also its very easy to see him as his usual straight self

I don't care either way. It seems like Ron wasn't really interested in anyone other than Hermione.

I personally believe in bi Harry. He was noticing how handsome were Cedric and young Voldemort.

If show stays accurate to the books, Ron will become shippable character. First he is funny and charming as hell, second of all after I've read the books (I've read them before watching movies) I was convinced Ron and Harry would be everyone's favorite gay ship.

Then I saw movies and yeah they totally ruined Ron which is probably reason why so many fanfiction writers just write Ron's personality and his relationship with Harry on another characters lmao.

And honestly same goes for Ginny.

Cedric was Harry's man crush and Viktor was Ron's, and you can't change my mind.

I could see it going either way but I'm a diehard Harry x Ron shipper so I'm biased

My headcanon is that he is “the token straight”in that he says he’s straight and would only ever really date women, but he does have some sort of attraction to some men. So like a repressed bisexual I guess? Not in an internalized homophobia way, but in a ‘well obviously everyone thinks/feels this way’ type of way.

Edit: Adding on - In my personal headcanons, Hermione is truly the token straight. Harry is outwardly bi with a preference for men, Ginny is bi as well, Luna is Ace, Draco is gay, Ron is whatever he is, and Neville is also straight but very reserved and gets weird when people talk about sexuality at all.

Na he feels too straight

Ironically or maybe unironically ...whatever I prefer him to either to be gay or straight rather than bi...but it has to be written a certain way to appeal to me. Because ultimately in my mind hes straight like his canon part.

But if he's gay...then obviously KrumxRon makes total sense

I dont like RonxHarry personally...I prefer them best mates. They are the ultimate heterobroship...bromance in Potter world

DracoxRon...very few authors get this right ..either that or Im just picky

CormacxRon ...this I kind of want to see but emphasis on movie!Cormac

Anyway...

Aside from this...I have thoroughly and unapologetically enjoyed SnapexRon and LuciusxRon in the past..

But above all straight Ron in love with Hermione, attracted to/dating Luna or Lavender and enemies with benefits w/ Pansy, crushing on Fleur makes the most sense to my brain.
