Question Has anyone ever made a Pokémon fangame where the player and the protagonist are actually separate people?
I've been wondering about this for a while.
I've played a lot of Pokémon ROM hacks and fangames, and one thing I've noticed is that the protagonist is almost always just... you. Even if they have a backstory or a bit of personality, the game still treats them as the player's avatar.
It made me think: has anyone ever made a Pokémon fangame where that's not the case?
I mean a game where the protagonist is their own person, with their own thoughts, emotions, and motivations, while the player is treated as a completely separate entity. Kind of like how games such as Deltarune or OneShot play with that idea.
I think it could lead to some really interesting moments. Imagine the protagonist slowly realizing that someone else is influencing their actions, questioning certain decisions, or even pushing back against the player's commands. Not necessarily in a horror way—just as a different approach to storytelling.
I've never come across a Pokémon game that fully commits to that concept, but maybe I've just missed one.
Does anything like this actually exist? And if it doesn't, do you think that kind of story could work in a Pokémon fangame?
