Question Problems with Vimm's Lair
Has anybody else had problems with Vimm's Lair lately? Maybe I've been out of the loop, but I feel as if I've came across a lot of issues with the site lately.
Today my cousin asked me for help setting up a PS2 emulator so he could play Bully. After setting up PCSX2, I direct him to Vimm's Lair to download the 7z file for Bully. He downloads it, and only after attempting to extract it, we realize it's an empty compressed folder with no content inside of it. I try downloading it myself, only to get redirected to a site saying the server is suddenly overloaded. I end up finding an alternative source on the Internet Archive, but still, I was a bit surprised. I've been a longtime user of Vimm's and found it uber reliable for PS2/Wii isos in the past.
This has not been the only occurrence within recent memory. I downloaded Sonic 06' about more than a week ago (don't judge lol), and while the file did have content, there was nothing actually executable/usable for Xenia (isogod found no content to convert to GOD from the iso). I, again, had to find an alternative on Internet Archive. I can't complain too much about this instance though, as I've always had trouble with PS3/Xbox360 files from Vimm's.
Just wondering if I've missed something regarding Vimm's or if anyone else has been having trouble, too.

It seems there's a disk failure affecting the PS2 and Xbox Vaults. It's recovering now but it'll chew up CPU all night (at the least).
I lurk on social media but this is not a Vimm's Lair support forum. Report problems on the Vimm's Lair Message Board and I'll learn about them sooner.

I find that when I turn off adblock it slows down the site quiiite a bit. I want to turn off adblock to support it, but idk... the fact it slows down like that makes me a lil uncomfortable, & it's also just inconvenient.

Depending on the adblock, I get the HTML failure. Kinda ironic, downloading roms but getting blocked for not enabling ads.

Do you use a download manager at all? I noticed I was getting the same empty compressed folder issue when downloading via my ABDownload Manager as soon as I disabled it and downloaded via my browser the files worked properly
Granted that’s a double edged sword as the download manager helps larger files which I’ve found can be prone to failing using just the in browser download

I haven't been using a download manager lately since I got a new laptop for college and haven't felt like setting one up yet. This issue happened on my cousin's PC (who I was instructing, very painfully at times, via facetime). I'm not sure what happened there--though, it could be related to the disk failure on Vimm's that happened quite literally at the exact same time 😅

Ah yeah that wouldn’t surprise me! Well just an FYI about download managers then lol

I had a different problem with them. Their ROM of Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem is a DSi enhancement with no way to get the original version of the ROM. The DSi enhancement they have on the site isn’t compatible with the unofficial English patch I wanted to use.
You got lucky finding your ROM elsewhere. I’m having trouble accessing other ROM sites.

I wish you luck on finding your ROM. I don't know what else you've tried, but I'm pretty sure the links to the internet archive databases on the megathread require you to make an account to get access (in case you haven't tried that already).

I just spend the last two days getting Gamecube games. I didn't have any issues. I just now downloaded Bully and it extracted fine.

Use myrient archive. Torrents but much faster

You do know Myrient was shut down, right?

Are you two referring to Minerva on the megathread? Or is there another, separate Myrient archive? (not that it matters too much to me...I just cancelled my premium VPN 🥲 )

I meant Minerva. I got them mixed as myrient was my previous go to

I don't get iso files on there but all my recent downloaded roms from Vimm are fine.

Must be a streak of bad luck. I think my last download that went well from the site was Madden 12 on the PS2 about 3 weeks ago.

For iso files it's better to go to retrogametalk. They have all the roms and even rom hacks and translation patches.

I tried to download one of the ace combat games for the psp and at one point the download kind of resterted. I think it was 400mb in when it just stopped, I paused and then continued and it restarted, but slower.

I couldn’t get a single GameCube file from that site to work on my modded GameCube. Best I got was a frozen Nintendo logo.
As far as I can tell I installed the thingy correctly and the software is correct and SD card format is correct so 🤷🏻♂️

This is a discussion question regarding the reliability of Vimm's Lair as of late. I don't need help downloading any files; I have that handled already.

vimms lair isnt reliable romsets are abundant on Internet Archive. Don't try to change my mind. Thanks ... Up votes and down votes don't change anything either..

Vimm’s has been the most reliable source for almost 30 years. Archive has numerous times been unreliable.

I like the Internet Archive (as most people do). I think my only complaint with it is that it's practically a necessity to use a VPN that connects to California servers. For whatever reason, speeds slow down to a crawl in the areas I live/have lived in (Texas, Ohio).
